Training: Thursday 23rd August
Couldn't wait to get off the train this morning. It might have looked and felt like spring, but inside the carriage it was all winter, with every other person coughing, sneezing and sniffing, with not a tissue in sight.
It feels like finals' time and it was a great morning to walk through Yarra Park and head to the Glasshouse for a coffee. Last year's A-Team has given way to the C-Team when it comes to service and coffee making. Oh well.
The players started arriving at about 11am. Nearly the entire list was on the track, with interested bystanders in Tim Broomhead and Lyndon Dunn. Jamie Elliott spoke to Buck's before going down to the gym.
Ben Reid did supervised running on the outer side.
Howe arrived late and also went to the outer side and ran with Reid. He later ran laps.
Treloar appeared early and worked with a trainer on the AAMI side. Watched him through the glasses and he didn't seem too happy. He later joined in skill work, but didn't participate in match practice.
Tyson Goldsack did full training as did Flynn Appleby.
Match Simulation:
Black V Yellow
Some of the match-ups were:
McLarty V Madgen
Langdon v Wills
Maynard v Stephenson
Murphy v Faz
DeGoey v Appleby
Daics v Crisp
Goldsack V Cox
Tyler Brown v Mihacek
Smith v Varcoe
Yellow team heads toward Hisense end and Stephenson crumbs for a goal.
Now the ball heads to the Yarra end and DeGoey takes a strong contested mark against Appleby and goals.
They looked very sharp this morning, in fact, as sharp as I've seen them on the track all year. Very slick by hand and foot and if only Taylor Adams could bring these training skills to match day; his kicking was superb.
Darcy Moore did all of the warm ups and then went across to the outer side with a trainer. He left the track after about 40 minutes.
I watched Treloar closely when we joined in the ball drills. He ran and kicked ok, but he had no real dash about him. Two weeks ago he looked as if a return might be possible. Today he looked a bit proppy and I thought he may be beginning to feel he won't make it. Hop I'm wrong of course.
The group was in very high spirits. Maynard had a ball down at the Olympic Boulevard end and it was noticeable that here was a group pretty happy with itself. Yes, finals would do that, but they seem a group in the groove.
I made much of Sier looking like an outsider last year. He hardly interacted with any other players and couldn't find the ball. So much different now. He's fitter, is committed and acts as if he belongs out there. Liked a couple of his 50m goals today as well. The boy can consistently kick 50m off a couple of steps.
Mason Cox also did some goal kicking from the 50 m line near the boundary. Didn't see him make the distance. One bounced through though.
Max Lynch took a few contested grabs today. He's one I tend not to notice, but today he looked more likely. He's just turned 20 and has always been ok skill wise, so good to see the marking improving. He rucked against Grundy today.
Sidebottom wore Kayle Kirby's No.27 guernsey today. They must be made of very stretchy fabric those ISC things! Sidey probably packed his jumper ready for the trip west.
Happy to answer any questions.
Great job Apples, really appreciate it
