The Cardinals have brought in Dr. Jen Welter as a training camp/preseason inside linebackers coaching intern.

Welter is the first ever female coach in the NFL. Just about four months after the NFL hired its first woman official in Sarah Thomas, coach Bruce Arians is giving Welter a chance to impress as a coach. Welter is a Doctor of Sports Psychology and had been working as a coach for the Texas Revolution of the Indoor Football League. Arians openly supported woman coaches at the owners meetings.

Coach Bruce Arians expressed displeasure with the Cardinals' running back position at Monday's press conference, adding the team intends to sign a free agent back.

Third-round pick David Johnson has been sidelined since early in camp with a hamstring injury, while Andre Ellington also missed about a week of practice with a similar ailment. Kerwynn Williams failed to impress in his reps with the first team. In order to make a move on Ellington's touches, Johnson needs to get healthy. He remains an intriguing pick in the double-digit rounds of drafts, particularly PPR due to Johnson's pass-catching skills.

Sources tell ESPN's Dianna Marie Russini the Cardinals have offered free agent RB Chris Johnson a one-year contract.

Fed up with injuries and/or poor play from Andre Ellington, David Johnson, Marion Grice and Kerwynn Williams, the Cardinals are taking action. It's likely a bare bones offer with no guarantees, but Johnson could very well accept as he's attracted no known interest on the open market. Johnson turns 30 in September and has been both a locker room liability and inefficient runner for the last four seasons. We wouldn't put him on our draft boards even if he signs with the Cardinals.

Cardinals RB David Johnson has been diagnosed with a Grade 2 hamstring injury.

Grade 1 pulls involve mild soreness and Grade 3 involves a serious tear/severe pain. Grade 2 injuries are somewhere in between, often resulting in some limping. Johnson, who still hasn't had one fully padded practice as an NFL player, should be considered week to week. The Cardinals are frustrated enough that they've made a contract offer to free agent Chris Johnson.

NFL suspended Cardinals RT Bobby Massie three games for violating the league's substance-abuse policy.

Massie is appealing, but he likely just ceded right-tackle duties to first-rounder D.J. Humphries. Massie was sub-replacement last season, but wasn't a catastrophe opposite Jared Veldheer. He'll be eligible to return Week 4.

Cardinals coach Bruce Arians calls first-round OT D.J. Humphries "knee deep," because that's "how far coaches have put a foot up his rear to motivate" him.

Arians also chided Humphries' maturity in OTAs before noticing an improvement in minicamp. Arians is an old-school coach, one who might be hard for the 21-year-old Humphries to win over. We would say Humphries was falling behind in his quest to overtake Bobby Massie at right tackle, but the job is now his after Massie earned a three-game suspension on Tuesday. Arians will spend the rest of camp trying to motivate his rookie.

He better get his ass into gear pretty quickly.

If being a starter in your rookie season isn't motivation enough, what the hell is he doing in the NFL in the first place?

FOX Sports 910AM's Mike Jurecki said Robert Hughes is locked in as the Cardinals' short-yardage back.

Coach Bruce Arians said he wanted to see what the RB/FB tweener could do as an inside runner, and he has apparently been impressed. The issue for Hughes as a fantasy asset is the Cardinals only scored six rushing touchdowns as a team last season with last year's short-yardage back Stepfan Taylor only managing one. He is not worth a pick in standard leagues.

The Cardinals will put free agent Chris Johnson through a workout and physical on Sunday.

The news comes from Jay Glazer, who trained with CJ?K following his early-offseason drive-by shooting. If Johnson checks all the boxes medically and physically, we suspect the Cardinals will sign him immediately.

FOX Sports 910 AM's Mike Jurecki said Cardinals rookie RB David Johnson (hamstring) will miss "at least another week."

Coach Bruce Arians has already said the missed practice time is "killing" Johnson, and vowed "there's no way in hell I'm putting him out there" if he misses camp. With Arizona set to bring in free agent Chris Johnson, David Johnson's shot at a rookie-year impact are decreasing by the day.

Cardinals ILB Sean Weatherspoon suffered a setback with his injured hamstring.

"Looks like it’s going to be another week," coach Bruce Arians said. Weatherspoon pulled the hamstring on the first day of camp and has not gotten in a full day of practice since. Weatherspoon has missed 28 games the last three seasons including all of 2014 with a ruptured Achilles'.

He went 4/4 for 77 yards. Of more interest.....he didn't get injured.
I heard he only played the first quarter, is that it?

First pre-season game, the starters barely play at all. As the coaches want to evaluate the rest of the squad, as they have to cut down from 90 to 70 man rosters fairly soon. Game 2, Palmer will play about as much again. It's the third game where you see the full starting teams play almost a full game to get them match-ready. Then the last game, they dont play at all, as the coaches again need to evaluate their squad, needing to cut down to 53 on the tuesday after the game.

Chris Johnson's new deal with the Cardinals is worth $870,000.

Johnson has to rush for 1,300 yards and make the Pro Bowl to reach the $2 million number quoted at signing. Johnson has not done either of those things since 2010. With no signing bonus, this is a no risk contract for the Cardinals.

Cardinals DT Corey Peters has been diagnosed with a torn left Achilles' tendon, and is out for the season.

There goes part of the the Cardinals' plan to replace Darnell Dockett. It's a massive blow for a player who tore his rightAchilles' in 2013. Now 27, Peters is a replacement-level talent, but his injury thins already questionable defensive line depth in the desert. Fourth-rounder Rodney Gunter is the next man up. Alameda Ta'amu is also in the picture. Peters is signed (cheaply) through 2017.

Making his preseason debut, David Johnson put on a show against the Chargers on Saturday, rushing 13 times for 66 yards, and catching two passes for an additional 15 yards.

Johnson got run with both the first- and second-team offense. The third-rounder looked worth the wait for grouchy coach Bruce Arians, showing some real slickness through the pile. Johnson also did a good job of following his blockers, and turned a few nothings into somethings. Johnson still did a little unnecessary dancing, and may have botched a blitz pick up, but it was an extremely positive debut. Andre Ellington will begin the year as the Cardinals' No. 1 back, but Johnson has a real shot at third-down duties. Recent signee Chris Johnson was inactive this evening.

Cardinals intern LB coach Jen Welter called her time with the team "a complete win."

The NFL’s first female coach will see her training camp internship come to an end but said, "The biggest question coming in was would guys in the NFL respond to a woman coaching them, and the obvious answer is yes." Welter worked with the Arizona inside linebackers this summer under defensive coordinator James Bettcher. Arizona’s D/ST unit is currently the sixth group off the board in fantasy drafts.

* we're looking good at the moment. Not just points wise but just all round quality, O line, defensive ends, the no fly zone is strong, offence kicking into gear, Carson healthy, Larry being the beast that he is, CJ2K getting back to his old form.

I'm feeling good about this season.

Fox 910 Phoenix's Mike Jurecki "wouldn't be surprised" if the Cardinals released suspended ILB Daryl Washington this offseason.

Washington isn't costing the Cardinals anything on their reserve/suspended list, but he can't get reinstated after myriad off-field violations, and Cardinals official website writer Darren Urban previously predicted Washington has played his final down for the team. Per FOX Sports' Jay Glazer, the ultra-talented Washington has "continued to have violations" while in the NFL's drug program. Still only 29, Washington's career is literally wasting away. The 2012 Pro Bowler hasn't played since December of 2013.

Really happy with our first two picks.

Our biggest Achilles heel (besides Palmer in the NFC Championship) was our weak pass rush, I think we have shored that up in a massive way.
With 29 we get Robert Nkemdiche, hes a bigger, quicker and stronger version of Darnell Dockett.
Than with our second rounder we get a two time pro-bowler in a contract season with a championship ring.

Really excited about where this and the natural development of the roster will take us in the new season.
