Missing the point though. He's a good player that we lost for nothing. We can't keep losing talented players without getting return for assets.

Fair point, but I'll be reserving my judgement until he has a long, injury free run at the Cats. He had his runs of games for us too.

What were we going to get for him? Please tell me

We shouldn't have got rid of him. Should have put a better plan in place to get his body right. With a new fitness guy and a fresh set of eyes on the situation we could have set him up for success. We put it in the too hard basket and another team has seemingly got him out on the park whether that continues longer term time will tell. Of course working in sports science for the better part of 15 years myself this is just my opinion.

It's all about smart trading and releasing talent for nothing is not smart. You weigh up the upside of getting his body right vs going to the draft with a late token pick or picking up a delisted free agent etc. Are those guys likely to be best 22 long term themselves.. maybe but unlikely.

And let's not make this just about Martin. I'm talking historically with us. We've failed to get a lot of players bodies right. We've also let a lot of players go without getting any return for them. You may be ok with that level of management but I'm not. Every time you go to the draft and get an asset on your list, if you let them go for peanuts or nothing you have failed because you start with limited currency each year to bring in assets.

I'm not okay with it. But something had to change with Martin, Marchbank, Cuningham especially. Martin still missed 3 months with a calf injury this year. Carlton fans would've burned Ikon Park to the ground if we had've retained him and he missed 3 months with another soft tissue injury

How many players have we had over the last decade or so who've had similar rehab plans and have led to reinjury?

HAs seemed endless.

There's injury prone players and then there's clubs who are injury riddled constantly. We've had the latter far too long without identifying causation.

Removing all those guys at once was a lot of talent released for zero return. We couldn't retain all of them but I would have persisted with Martin. Marchbank was absolutely spent and Cuningham wasn't as high a calibre player as Martin. Change was needed but I disagree with how hard we cut that talent all at once.

Yeah without being inside those four walls it's hard to say what could have been done differently and I know all sports scientists, strength and conditioning departments etc see things differently. But you're right, we went far too long addressing the root cause of so many breaking down repeatedly.

We aren't in a position to be hanging onto injury prone blokes that miss half a season every year with soft tissue injuries. The cats took a gamble, and it's worked i guess (they are in the same position they were 12 months ago, so its arguable)

Possibly, but as long as it's Anyone But Collingwood I'll be happy.
Like everything else, I dont think we are great at being front runners.
Maybe if Pies beat us to 17 then we'll get into gear and focus hell for leather on evening the ledger.
