That's pretty much my preferred line up although 8,9,10 would be Starc, Pattinson, Siddle.

I'm not sure about Burns in the squad though, when it comes to the Ashes I don't like people coming from the Shield debuting for Australia (unless they are quite anticipated), we need players that have played big games before.

Burns is a gun. He'll be able to step up when his team needs it, has done so for Queensland for the past 2 shield seasons

Suggest you check the stats. Cosgrove has 40 wickets to his name at an average of just over 40. I'm not saying he is a front-liner, or even a legitimate allrounder. But he's handy. Granted, watching the fatboy pound has way to crease is pretty funny...

I'd much rather a traditional 6 batsman + wicket + 4 bowlers team, with guys like Cosgrove, Warner and Smith chipping in with a few overs (assuming Smith makes the team as a legitimate batsman), than a bits-n-pieces hack like Maxwell. Even Henriques, notwithstanding his positive debut, is really not up to international standard as a batsman or bowler.

- And finally, wouldn't someone younger benefit from an Ashes series more so than Rogers and Cosgrove?

I posted a side not too long ago, but had a little bit of a re-think.

A few things I focussed on this time around;
- Experience
- Versatility
- Stability
- Diversity

1. Warner
2. Cowan
3. Hughes
4. Clarke (c)

This top order is nothing original, and I probably think this is the consensus on BigFooty. Hughes' spot at three is not set in concrete, but there is simply no one worthy yet to replace him. Clarke is promoted, and almost eliminates any chance of a severe collapse.

5. Watson
6. Haddin
7. Wade (+)

Less stable statistically, but has a high chance of working in my own opinion. Watson is demoted and Haddin is included but not at the expense of Wade. Watson is still a valuable member to the team without his bowling. He is a nightmare to bowl too when in form, and I urge all of you to not jump off the bandwagon yet after a lean tour. I cringed a little when I made this inclusion, but I believe it is the right one for the team. Haddin is decent with the bat and would probably handle the occasion much better than the likes of Khawaja, Smith, Maxwell and Henriques. Wade is rightfully retained.

- I hope Agar will be ready. Only one way to find out.
- Haddin is a better keeper than Wade. If they're both in the team, I'd let Haddin keep. I don't think we've taken reserve keepers to England recently as there's usually someone in county who can come in (like Manou).
- Love Starc, but I feel like Bird and Harris will give what we need in England. More than happy for Starc to replace either of them though.
- Disagree that Siddle is our best bowler. Think he'll be struggling to keep his spot when everyone is fit. I also feel he might struggle in England.
- Cosgrove should be in the team simply because he's the second best batsman in the country and we need him. Rogers goes because his experience will be vital if any of our top order are injured. He'll play if he needs to. Doolan goes for the experience only.

They couldn't do any worse by picking Cosgrove, great talent but too much love for hamburgers I think.

Has played many county seasons too for Glamorgan so he will know what to expect. Having said that I dont think he is a snowflakes chance in hell, even if he was to make 200 in the Sheffiled Shield final !

My Squad(s)
Warner - I actually think he could be quite successful in English conditions, sure the ball will swing, but if hits through the line and swings hard on those small English grounds he could be very dangerous.
Cowan - temperamentaly has shown a lot in India, knows his game and plays to it, reminds me of Simon Katich, even though Kat was unique at the crease !
Hughes - from what we have seen has fixed his technique against the swinging ball so shoould still be given a chance in the UK
Clarke - picks himself
Watson - dont think he should but he will
Smith - will be there on back of that innings in the 3rd test unless something goes drastically wrong for him or right for Khawaja / Burns / Doolan
Wade - incumbent
Starc - bounce and left arm swing valuable in England (subject to fitness)
Pattinson - our no. 1 bowler
Siddle - just so lion hearted
Lyon - will be and should be given more chances, India is a graveyard for touring spinners traditionally

Khawaja - first reserve
Burns/Doolan - one will get picked for experience
Johnson - backup to Starc
Bird - seems ideally suited
Harris - they are desperate to pick him I reckon, can bowl outswing at pace
Haddin - seems to be backup keeper at this stage
Maxwell - I dont like it but I reckon they'll stick with him for a bit longer.

I would expect a few of those in your "A" squad to be playing champions trophy (Bailey, Faulkner, maybe Cutting). While in some cases, I wouldn't mind them being pulled out of a meaningless limited overs tournament in favour of some first class games that is unlikely; and would only apply to those who are a chance of gaining of the final couple of Ashes berths (Cutting, maybe the other two).

IMHO the Ashes is not a development series. This is not Zimbabwe or Bangladesh. We should be sending the best players.

IMO Wade should give up the gloves because he's a really talented batsman and could actually become an important bat with an average in the 40s if he focusses his game on it.

Not true. Haddin is significantly cleaner than Wade, particularly up at the stumps.

Honestly, such a shame he's been injured.

He's the experienced old head we need in the middle order imo, with a proven shield record, and provides that part time stump-to-stump 130km/h the selectors seem to want. He's also in that generation that was probably good enough, but was kept out of the side by players like Hussey, Clarke, etc

Henriques and Smith need to go on the Aus A tour and prove they can perform in English conditions before they get a spot in the squad. Would like to see Butterworth and Hilfenhaus to get a gig too.

Wade will be okay with the gloves. He is always better when he doesn't have to deal with spin. He will eventually get up to Haddin's standard of glovework, which is adequate if he continues to score runs. He will be better with the bat in England than he has been on this tour.
