If, as it looks like it will, the Family First Party (run by Assemblies of god) get the last seat in the senate, will anyone else be worried about the direction this country will take in the next 4 years. I wasn't concerned about which party won government, but to have all new legislation going through any religious party, I believe is very wrong.

Thoughts?

Here's a thought. The Christian Democrats (the other religious loonies) have a presence in the NSW state upper house. Are they having any effect? Anyone know?

Here's a thought. The Christian Democrats (the other religious loonies) have a presence in the NSW state upper house. Are they having any effect? Anyone know?

They don't have a huge influence, but the numbers in the NSW upper house have neither major party anywhere near a majority. Labor usually are able to make deals with some of the other smaller parties.

I don't know a lot about the Family First Party, but I thought they were aligned with the Assemblies of God rather than Seventh Day Adventists. I heard somewhere (unless I've got them confused with someone else) that the pastor at Guy Sebastian's church is the founder of the party.
But in the senate they're likely to be Liberal stooges, which gives the Liberals the majority. If FF turn out not to virtually always vote with the Coalition, it'll be a major surprise.

OK thanks, Bomber. And BTW - all it took was for me to hear that the FFP were anti gays and lesbians, and I dumped them at the bottom of my green paper, and ahead of only the CDP and One Nation on the white.

These people worry me a bit. It may be hearsay, but I read somewhere they want mosques, freemasons halls etc pulled down and gays killed. Just as radical as islamic terrorists IMO. Anyone who is not AOG is obviously an infidel. They are typically hypocritical (like most religious zealots) as they preferenced adulterer Ross Cameron in his seat.

Having said all that, the Family First bloke I saw on the news tonight seemed quite reasonable. Said that he would not be a puppet for any of the major parties.

Yeah me to. It's a pity because the Democrats have one of the most honest pollies in the whole Senate - Natasha Stott Despoja. When she got rolled by the party room the party itself almost imploded. I heard that the ballot for a new leader carried a plethora of informal votes because so many members wanted Nat to lead the party.

Apparently Family First are also opposed to the outright privatisation of Telstra, which to me is a good thing.

On the CDP: Fred Nile isn't bad, I don't agree with everything he stands for but he's obviously done a good job in the NSW upper house to be there for so long. I'm very much a conservative-leaning Roman Catholic, religiously, very much open about my beliefs and vision here, so I feel these parties have as much a role to play in politics as those on the other end of the spectrum.

We stopped over in Brisbane a few years ago and He came and picked us up as we had 6 hours to wait for our plane home.

He said to us "We can do the normal touristy things if you like or we can do something really exciting"

I said " Your the host we will do whatever you have planned"

So we headed out to Boondall Stadium and I thought "you beauty there must be a Basketball match on!"

The big surprise was that it was one of Benny Hinnes Crusades. :shock:

It was a real eyeopener with people getting healed etc.

I got a hell fright when I was having a bit of a quiet nod when some dude behind me grabbed my shoulder and yelled "Praise the Lord!"

It wasn't my cup of tea but they all seemed to be happy and full of love and caring.

Thanks Rip - that's all I wanted to know. I'd heard some scary things but they may have been untrue. They are no real problem if they are caring and positive. As long as they don't bible-bash me or torch the house because I'm a non-practising mick. Like I said, the FF guy who is likely to be in the senate seemed really sensible.

I don't believe they are really all that harmful from what i've seen. They just have very strong christian and family values and at least they are honest in setting out their agender and desires for what they want to achieve in the senate.

The only problem i see here is that they will be leaned upon heavily by the coalition too pass their legislation throught the Senate. It will only be the FFP vote required. The Coalition are very skilled and very cunning and can be very persuasive. I just hope the FFP have the ability to see through some of this and offer an objective decision on whether to pass the legislation or not and not be continually tricked (ala Lees and Murray). Will they have the ability and resources to fully analyse these, especially in complicated areas dealing with security, defence, economy etc. I hope they do.

I am glad they won't support Telstra until its services are up to scratch for all people particularly in the Bush, but i think the NATS will have a large say in this too, that i have no doubt about.

Nonsense. The Dems were created as a small l liberal party but got hijacked by the hard left. On economic issues they should side with the libs but have major differences over things like the environment, Iraq, refugees, gay marriage etc. They have now been outflanked by the extreme left greens that's why they are stuffed and because they have changed leaders so often and because nearly all of their leaders have been massive duds. Why vote for pseudo left wingers when you can vote for Comrade Bob and his bunch of extremists who you know will never vote with the govt on any legislation in the senate.

She was despised by all her parliamentary colleagues. Its very easy to try and blame Lees for the demise of the Democrats but they were doing far better under her after the GST was brought in they are now. NSD needs to shoulder a huge amount of the blame.
