I don’t think many of us truly know have good or bad a job he is doing, so if Walsh thinks he is doing a good job, then l will back him in.

I don't think it has much to do with Walsh. Bucks obviously loves Harves which is why he is still at the club.

Walsh is still the head man, so to speak. Yes bucks likes him, but Walsh, Harvey would gone if was bad, friend or no friend

So our track record at letting go assistants is sound.

And there is no evidence that Longmuire is any better than the above who were all highly regarded at Coll.

I don't think that's the right metrics to measure assistant coach success, assistant coaches who regard themselves highly are always going to move on to get varied experience. It's rare for a coach to actually hold on to a 'highly rated' assistant for anymore than 3 years nowadays.

I believe we can't really know the impact of an assistant coach. It's very hard to know without being in the club. Everyone likes to dump crap on Harvey but he won an AFLCA Assistant Coach of the Year award . Best we can go on is some whispers, like the praise media people seemed to be giving Longmuir. We simply don't know how much responsibility an assistant coach is given, whether they are actually listened to etc.

No, we would have no idea about Harvey. The club did a review two years ago. Every position was analysed. Harvey got the thumbs up.
Regarding Longmuir, nobody is indispensable. The Club have known for weeks that he was going. They'd have a replacement or two in mind for sure.

Agree we should go hard for the likes of Mitchell and Collins. Both have great pedigree. However I have one question for you - as assistants to Buckley or one of them as replacement senior coach?

If Buckley screws up over the next two years, BOTH are premium replacements.

This sucks more than people realise.
Defensive coach two years and these are the two years our backline has held up no matter the injuries.
No surprise he came to to club start of 2018 and we went from 13th to a GF or whatever it was.
This will really hurt us i reckon

Might be right, but unless you're in the inner core, who the hell knows who does what and who is making the good calls and the bad calls.

Going by the play of this year - we seemed to structure and move the ball in a way that protected the defence, it may be a good thing to have a less respected defensive coach, who doesn't win as many arguments.

It seems we have made the correct choice in selecting Longmuir & I am looking forward to him bringing a bit of Collingwood professionalism to Fremantle.

In regards to your defensive structures & coaching, could Nick Maxwell be moved into that coaching position?

The numbers don't lie, the defense ran like clockwork and at least some of that has to be credited to Longmuir. The transition to head coach is not always smooth sailing but he has the advantage of knowing Freo.

Maxy has other ambitions I assume, but we're lucky that he's around to help.

The numbers can lie. The way a team structures up and moves the footy can have a big say in the defensive numbers. Blind Freddy would have had good stats if he had have been assistant coach in Ross Lyon's St Kilda team.

Having said that, all of our defenders seemed to become better footballers whilst he was coaching them, I reckon that's a big tick for him.

True re Lyon, but our defense numbers got better after Longmuir became the line coach. We owe him due credit (at least in part) for the upswing. It doesn't mean he will succeed at Freo but he did a good job for us by all accounts.

We don't hear much about the efficacy of the assistant coaches and their work with their line groups but what we often hear is that Harvey is highly rated as an astute thinker on the game. Got no idea what that means or if it means he's doing his job as a line coach, but it is an interesting observation.

I'd be keen on some fresh voices in the coaches box. Need to move Harvey on - not been a fan. Not sure who is out there but surely Walsh has been looking at candidates over the course of the year.

If he is responsible for Grundy tapping it to his feet all of the time and not a bit clearer of the contest for Treloar and others to run onto, then I agree with this call on Robert Harvey.

Longmuir was highly rated. It's pretty clear that our defence was good the past 2 years in his presence though.
You can measure that. Particularly last year when we were so undermanned with Dunn, Moore etc unavailable and no Roughead, our structures were good.
Took a while to stop Howe, Moore, Langdon, ROughead to all stop flying when this season started, but clearly they did a good job on most statistical categories

For Harvey, despite a much vaunted midfield and the best 1-2 ruckman in the game, I feel like our centre bounce clearances in particular have been poor.
If that is indeed his remit, then I think he's been disappointing in his ability to address this.
We got majorly outplayed by West Coast last year 2-3 times. Giants smashed us earlier this season with Kelly, Coniglio, Ward all missing. Tigers last time we played too smashed us with 2nd rate ruckmen. Three isolated incidents, but reflective enough I think of the general performance level of the midfield coach.

I understand they did a review and clearly Harvey must be ticking performance measures, from the outside that wouldn't seem to be the case whatsoever though.

From what I know he's a lovely bloke, people love him, players love him so that can make it difficult to let someone go, if you're using the heart over the head. Which shouldn't be the case imo, not in this business. Don't get me wrong a coach of any kind needs to have some sort of availability and connection with players and staff, but it's not the deciding factor.

He was given the arse from Carlton fairly quickly, I hear they weren't impressed, but he was fresh. St Kilda didn't want him as a permanent coach after Rossy left, he didn't want to stay as assistant, after being caretaker coach, felt slighted. He's been with us ever since.

I know for a fact, he's what's called a "quiet voice" on the track and in the club in general. He's not one to pull players into line, he's more of the mr nice guy, in fact very much so. Again that's why people like him.

But I don't believe his track record or results at least from what I see or his very nature is what we need. I really think he should be let go and a new coach is brought in.

Well as the midfield coach, he should be instructing him to do something differently, because our midfield has not taken advantage of Grundy's tap out dominance most weeks. Even Grundy noted recently that it was something of focus.

I'd assume he'd be coached for a variety of approaches to any given ruck contest. Up to him to choose which he applies on any given occasion.

This late in the process Crows reportedly have narrowed the search to a couple of candidates. Would be a massive shock if Hocking was being considered
