I think we should update this Wikipedia page to include Aussie Rules:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dynasty_(sports)

What Aussie Rules teams would qualify?

* Brisbane '01, '02, '03
* Collingwood when they won 4 flags
* Melbourne ... didn't around the same time as the above, they won something like 5 GF's in 6 years or something like that?
* Port Adelaide in the SANFL?
* Hawthorn in the 1980's?

In sports, the term dynasty is often used to refer to a team that dominates their sport for a period of time. Such dominance is usually recognized only after a team has won many championships in a given time (3 in 4 years, 5 in 8 years, 7 in 12 years, etc.). The exact requirements for the label is a frequent topic of debate among sports fans.

From 88-91 Hawthorn won 3 in 4 years.
From 83-91 Hawthorn won 5 in 9 years.

They would have to qualify wouldn't they?

Minimum four consecutive premierships to apply for a dynasty.

And the only club to have more consecutive premierships than Collingwood's 4 is Port Adelaide with 6! :D

Collingwood won in 1927, 1928, 1929 and 1930.

Port Adelaide won in 1954, 1955, 1956, 1957, 1958, 1959

Add to that, Port Adelaide won 10 premierships between 1951 and 1965, plus we had 3 peats in 79, 80 and 81, 88, 89 and 90, and 94, 95, 96.

Port Adelaide is the ultimate dynasty.

Noble Park football club have a better dynasty than Port Adelaide....:D

My point is that you can't compare a SAFL record to the ones achieved at the highest level.

Ultimate......hardly! ;)

A fair effort, but the ultimate dynasty is St George in the Rugby League - 11 straight 1956-1966 - say what you want about the sport, but that's an incredible run.

Your saying that a 4 in a row dynasty in the late 1920's in the VFL is better than a 6 in a row dynasty in the 1950's in the SANFL?

You are dreamin!

None of that counts:p
Only VFL/AFL:D

Noble Parks dynasty wasn't in the late 1920's mate. :D:thumbsu:

Brisbanes effort to win 3 straight flags and play in 4 straight GF's in the national competition in the 2000's blows any SAFL record from the 1950's out of the water. If you believe otherwise you are either biased or delusional.

Lions team of 2001-2004 is the most Dominate side of the modern era, 4 grand finals in a row and to win 3 of them in a row has got to be might close to a dynasty!

But those Port flags were won in...oh never mind.

But seriously - if there was a heading for SANFL dynasties, yeah, fine, but the VFL/AFL is what the Wiki page would be looking at I'm sure...

The Machine:

Between the years of 1927 and 1930, Collingwood FC became the first and so far, the only, team to win four successive premierships. This team became known as "the machine" because of the organised and consistent way it played. During this period of success Collingwood became the greatest club in the nation, possessing the largest and fiercest supporter base drawn originally from working class districts in inner Melbourne. With premiership victories in 1935 and 1936 the Collingwood Football Club had already won 11 premierships, and remained the most successful premiership club until Carlton began to lead the premiership tally in 1982.

Bloody wikipedia says that "The Western Bulldogs and Kangaroos are most often considered candidates for re-location" and that "their respective name changes in the 1990s were in anticipation of such a move". How dare they!!!!!!. This needs some serious editing

As it does any VFL state league titles in the 1920's. If you do not believe that you are biased and/or delusional.

Did the original poster of this topic limit this thread to VFL/AFL only? No he didn't.

If anyone seriously thinks that Collingwood's 4 in a row in the 1920's is better than Port Adelaide's 6 in a row in the 1950's, you are biased or delusional.

Brisbane's run from 2001-2004 is by far the best dynasty in the history of the game. No doubt about it.

North Melbourne 94-00

7 consecutive preliminary finals (League record)

2 Pre-Season Premierships

3 Grand Finals

2 Premierships
