Australia Test squad - 2015

What chance Adam Voges for a Test call-up?

I'd back it. Form is good and if they're ready to replace Watson now that M.Marsh is in the top 6, Voges could be ideal for a year or two. Plenty of English experience for the Ashes also.

Why Voges hasn't played more about 200 ODIs by now baffles me.

Huge fan of Voges, but over the years who should he have replaced in the middle order? If he was the incumbent we'd be making the same kind of statements about Bailey, Dave Hussey etc.

Fair call. He just seems to sum up an ODI so well. Every time I've seen him play he's batted perfectly for the situation.

Batsmen get better with age, even better if they are in form - Voges either gets picked now or never.
I guess it comes down to whether they're swayed by the volume of runs at FC level or are already committed to Burns and the Marsh brothers.

Maybe we could take these fringe players, including Voges, to the West Indies and give them a proper chance to press their claims.

Alternatively - Voges is contracted to Middlesex.

Let him go to Middlesex and play. If he's scoring runs in first division county cricket and we need a middle order batsman in the Ashes?

Well bring him in then.

Will give him an opportunity to stay in form which he won't sitting on the bench in the West Indies and playing the occasional tour match. And during the Ashes he will be in the country getting regular game time and we can add him to the squad whenever we want to

Fair enough.

If you were sitting down to pick the squad to tour the West Indies next week, who gets the nod out of Burns, the Marshes and Voges?

Assuming Watson survives at No.3. For now. And assuming Clarke plays. Basically leaves one spot at No.6 and one spot as a reserve. I'm guessing it would be a 14-man squad?

Something like this:

Warner
Rogers
Watson
Clarke
Smith
S. Marsh
Haddin
Johnson
Harris (?)
Lyon
Hazlewood
------------
M. Marsh
Burns/Voges
Starc/Pattinson (both if Harris is kept in cotton wool)

Will give him an opportunity to stay in form which he won't sitting on the bench in the West Indies and playing the occasional tour match.
I guess my suggestion would involve actually letting him play.

For the West Indies.

I'd stick with Burns and the Marsh's in the squad for now. *

They've had a taste and shown a bit and we should give them an opportunity. But if Clarke goes down injured in the Ashes and the series is quite close than I'd bring Voges right into the squad and into the test team.

*Assuming form over the last half of the season permits.

You can ask my mates but I have been calling for Adam Voges to get a test gig ever since he coached me for two batting sessions at Meulemans in odd 6(2006).

Voges has to be in the side. Has to be.

If Clarke is injured it's an obvious switch. If he's playing then you drop Watson, play Smith at 3 and M. Marsh at 6.

It's that easy. Drop Watson, drop him, dropp himmm

Kerry O'Keefe pointed out that Starc doesn't have a stock ball.

And I think that's actually a pretty good call and you can see it when Starc is struggling he doesn't really have the ability to go back to the basics and hold an end down.
Having lots of variations is great in limited overs cricket but in test cricket bowlers generally succeed by more subtle variations of a stock delivery.

He'll gain that with more experience but he can gain that experience for NSW.
Johnson, Harris, Pattinson and Hazlewood are the first four quicks I'd pick to tour England. Starc could contend to be the 5th bowler but so could Bird or even a smokey like Hilfenhaus, Sayers or Behrendorff.

I suspect Starc's temperament.

Johnson has probably made me want to smash more screens than any player in Aus cricketing history but I've always found him obscenely watchable with both bat and ball.

Don't quite see the same thing with Starc. In test cricket, he always seems to perk up when the tail is in and hangs his head too easily when the real batsmen are around.

But that might be a harsh judgement and purely a perception, not backed up by anything concrete. Seems to me that the selectors don't really trust him somehow for test cricket and I'd like to know why.

Agreed. Should be the next test opener post Bucky

Yes lets make the side even older. I've got a great idea, promote one of the youngish openers and we have a few.

Stop wanting to pick youth for the sake of it. Silk has been around 5 minutes

... they should

Also is Chris Lynn the leading run scorer in the shield? Oh he isn't? Number two? Oh he isn't? Odd

Lynn has greater scope. Nothing has shown me that Voges will be anything better than a 30-35 average test batsman. Lynn can easily do that, and he actually has the potential long term to average 50.

Just leave Voges playing County cricket and if need be draft him in.

Stop making absolute stop gap solutions. The reason why Rogers was picked was so that these young options got a few years to develop. Post Ashes we have the Windies and NZ at home and no disrespect meant but thats the perfect time to get some youth into the side, both in the bowling (for Harris), the keeper (for Haddin) and the batting for (Rogers/maybe Clarke). That isn't playing youth for the sake of it, but it is forward planning. We need to look 4 years down the track after the Ashes this year.

Who is the keeper in 4 years? Is it Nevill? Is it Whiteman?

who is in our batting side in the Ashes in England next time round?

Who is our starting bowling attack?

These blokes need test matches before then.
