Im not suggesting we should actually take him with pick 18 - I just think we should have 'negotiated' tougher and made him feel like we would. Like someone else suggested - if nothing else it might force someone else to take him ealiler than ohterwise would have leaving us with better access to the early younger players.

Even if he preferred to play for someone else, if we forced him into the PSD and could have taken him with our pick1 of course we would have. Some people around here are soft suggesting you look past him if he 'doesnt want to be here'. **** him - he goes where he's told by us because we should have been in a position of power in this instance.

Also Im not taking pot shots at Bailey and the footy department here - I rate them highly. Im just of the opinion that we couldve been stronger with this one.

Anyway I hope Port draft him and he has to move over there and has 2 more injury riddled seasons before being forced into early retirement after being hit by a bus (sorry that was a bit much wasnt it?).

Isnt it funny that in my phantom draft about a month ago I had Ball going to te Dees at 18. At that time I got ridiculed by a few Melbourne fans saying that would never happen and that I was an idiot. I said he would try to last to Collingwood but the Dees will jump in first in the hope to encourage him to join their growing squad.

Obviously if they were smart they wouldnt pick a guy who clearly doesnt want to play for them but it is a distinct possibility so to all those demon fans who had a go...feel free to eat ur words.

lol, nice call cp3 jr. I never seen that post but, kudo's to you sir, haha.

Also, Ball has not yet come out in the media and said he does NOT want to go to Melbourne, and until he does, I think Bailey and crew will continue to chase and have a good, long hard think about using pick 18.

Sure, he may prefer Collingwood, but until he say's he DOESN'T want to go elsewhere (even though he know's of the risk's upon entering the draft), It's free game as far as I'm concerned.

I wonder how smart you'll feel when Freo take him with pick 4? :D

Yeah, na not gonna happen. He would be worth pick 18 imo as long as he is happy there and stays fit. May even need to take him with pick 11 as Ive heard Sydney are keen with pick 14. Imagine how well that would go down...

Seeing that Scully is a Richmond supporter I would think Richmond would be his preferred destination. I can't see Melbourne letting him slip to us. The players prefered destination doesn't mean much. Pavlich wanted to go to Adelaide before he was drafted but ten years on he is still playing for Freo.

All players have a "preferred" club to go to, but would be happy to play at other clubs. I think some people here are being a bit hard on Ball, after all he hasn't came out and said that he doesn't want to play for Melbourne. I think Ball's point of view is that he would prefer to go to Collingwood, but if Melbourne picks him up in the National draft he would be no worse off then going in the Pre-season draft. I think he would be just as happy to play for Essendon or Brisbane compared to Melbourne. If Melbourne picks him up I am sure he would play to the best he can.

If he actually came out and said that he doesn't want to play for Melbourne, then Melbourne shouldn't pick him.

If clubs didn't pick players because they were not their preferred club then nobody would be playing for Port Adelaide.

see i heard he was melbourne, unless you know scully personally dont bring clubs into it.

Bailey has the right attitude, we are going to get the most out of guys who want to be at the club.

Draftees all have their preferences and it'd be well known that Trengove would like to stay in SA but his first preference and goal would be to make himself an AFL career no matter where he is drafted.

You really need a new hobby instead of slagging off Bailey.

Well said... that particular poster certainly seems to have a bug up his colon about DB for some reason... hopefully this one isn't another "Chickn" though

Exactly... that's my opinion about this too. There is no evidence I've seen anywhere that suggests Ball, while perhaps preferring to go to Collingwood, would somehow be greatly opposed to being chosen by us. If that was the case, I think we'd have seen a comment to that effect.

Yes because not even meeting or speaking to Melbourne really indicates he wants to play for us.

It's what he hasn't said that is the problem.

Usually i would agree with this with most players but luke ball has not used the media to "up" his quota.

By all means Melbourne and Ball may have talked, it is well knowledge that Melbourne and Connors have talked, thus if they are still in conversation it may be leading towards it

Maybe Conner's speaks for Ball, and with that being said maybe all the seed's are in place and Ball just want's it to look like Collingwood have a chance when really his grand scheme is to land at Melbourne and laugh at collingwood later. He goes into the ND so that we can get Thorpe or MacDonald in the PSD

That would almost be plausible but Im sure we would have asked McDonald to go into the National draft so we could get him with 34 rather than Ball who would require 11.

Is Joel McDonald the sort of player we really require? 185cm defender???

Exactly the sort of player we need. McDonald's a running half back, which is something we lack. He's an upgrade on Bell and Cheney, and ideally Grimes and Morton should be played in the midfield.

I tend to agree, I think MacDonald (at his height) could find a niche role in our defence and help sure things up - not that our defence was too bad to begin with.

Im sure he could play a midfield role as well. He is a run and carry player - he actually reminds me of Simon Buckley but he can kick.

Does anyone know why he was delisted by Brisbane? I posted the question on their board but havnt really got an answer yet.

Drummond, Rischitelli, Adcock, Redden and Polkinghorne are all similar types to McDonald, and Rischitelli aside, are rated higher.

what?

redden's an inside midfielder, a stoppage player.

i dont reckon we need macdonald. bennell's our man to fill that role for the next 10 years.

The way its panning out there is a small chance that we wont use PSD#1 and just use the spot to upgrade one of our rookies like McKenzie.

no chance imo
melbourne generally do well in the PSD whether steling a player or otherwise. I say get rid off 11, picks that early usually cause us hassle (surely we cant go wrong with 1 and 2 lol

That's right - methinks dee64 is spinning some airy gossamer with that post of his....
