Fremantle coach Mark Harvey will consider handing gun midfielder Michael Barlow a shock AFL recall against Essendon on Sunday in an attempt to revitalise the Dockers' flagging campaign.

Barlow tallied 15 possessions in two quarters of football in the WAFL reserves last week in his first game back from a broken leg.

The 23-year-old was initially expected to spend at least several weeks in WAFL ranks before pushing for a senior recall.

I said that in the WAFL/Barlow gameday thread and got called Brian Taylor for it.

Barlow is a smart footballer, he'll get himself to the right spot or be sitting on the bench. If there is a limited amount of games in an AFL player's life possible, I'd rather they were all at the top level than spending a month in the WAFL building fitness between the repeated efforts.

The difference between AFL and WAFL isn't the speed of the running, it's the time between the runs. He'll be running at full speed for Peel just the same as he would for Fremantle, he might not be able to back it up contest after contest but he's an elite runner and a smart footballer so his efficency-of-effort* is very strong.

A tagger will have an easier time sitting on him, his disposal will be slightly off and he'll spend more time on the bench. Quality is still quality.

*efficency of effort is my own term for appearing to be much fitter than the opposition because all the running done was to the right spots and wasted leads and efforts were at a minimum. - Not an actual stat.

Of course we are desperate, half the team is injured.

If he is fit enough to play wafl. I am happy to see he back in the first team.

He has the class to regain form quickly, and I would rather have Barlow running at 75%, than a spud with a pea heart.

Harves obviously isn't looking to Palmer for a midfield role.

I wonder if he will come off the bench or start ?

really if hes at 70% hes prob gonna be doing a lot better than some of the underperformers in the team.

is there a greater chance of injury complications in AFL vs WAFL? for hammys etc probably but not sure about a broken leg.

Harvey said it last night on 6PR (sorry couldn't record), something about getting him back in to give the team a big lift. As mentioned he was only considering it.

Club is getting desperate.

the trouble is that the next four games present our best opportunities for winning. in the 3rd act of the season, after the next bye, our games are much more difficult. if we win the next four, we'd need maybe 2-3 wins in the 3rd act to secure finals.

hence the desperation.

Well if he comes back in, I hope it is as the sub.

Perfect scenario is that we will be down by 6 goals at three quarter time, Barlow will take the vest off, the crowd will rise, the players will lift. Barlow will have 13 touches, kicking the winner after the siren :thumbsu:

Far out footy is a funny game. If we'd held on in the last quarter, it'd be all sunshine and puppy dogs down at Freo and they wouldn't even consider Barlow for another week at least.

It would have to be as the SUB and on that you'd think that Barlow would get as much out of playing a quarter and a bit as he would playing a WAFL game with Peel.

The upside is huge though to the team, imagine late in the third quarter Barlow makes his entrance, wish I was there for that..

The club will do the right thing by Barlow and the team.

He would do wonders for the belief of the squad

Right now, although we're injured, we're still capable of playing brilliant footy like in the first 3/4 of the game on the weekend

Unfortunatley, we also have bugger all belief and when we do actually have any belief and momentume, the likelihood of us losing that belief is bloody high

Barlow would help big-time in restoring any form of belief and the roar of welcome we would all give him as he's subbed on in the third quarter (hopefully early on or halfway through) would be enough to shake the very foundations of the enitre competition. And when he gets his first goal, well, let's just say they'll know we're coming :)

Seems to he's been in full training now for 5 or so weeks.
He played the game on Saturday, cam eoff, and then did more running, according to an article in the Herald Sun.

He was back on track on Monday, in training and doing shuttle runs.
Sounds liek the leg is ok.
He'd be a perfect sub this week :thumbsu:

Don't do it Harves.

Seriously, Barlow needs at least another week or 2 in the WAFL.

This is nothing short of madness and cannot be considered.

Negatives far outweigh the benefits on this one I'm afraid

Bad idea. Stick to the management plan of reintroducing him slowly to the pace and grind of Aussie Rules. WAFL reserves to AFL is just to great a leap when you want to ease a player back in post severe injury. The club has a responsibility to manage Barlow's return correctly. Would that REALLY be achieved by naming him to play against Essendon this week?

Nah, he'll be sweet. Got just as much chance getting injured playing ressies for Peel.

Bring back the duck !

A win to freo by 32 points!!!

He would only need 1 qtr of footy to make an impact. There are so many benefits of getting him in:
-Team Morale
-Crowd involvment
-Leadership
-BT getting excited
-Awsomeness
-Duck
etc. etc.

If HE wants to come back and the medicos give him the all clear, HE should play.. albeit as the Sub. Maybe he could come in and play on the wing or pockets rather than on the ball. Less intensity, but as he is a ball magnet, he would still have an impact on the game.

If Barlow was unsure and not ready for a return, he wouldn't be announcing his imminent return to the field and saying how good he has pulled up. He is throwing the gauntlet down to the selectors this week...

Players of his stature can acheive the impossible. :D

Dodgy Roger, on the other hand, is the one we should take small gradual steps with and manage him in the WAFL and prove himself before a return to the 22.
