Well when Luke Ball went down early in the year and we learnt of his season ending knee injury many of us gulped and wondered how we could cover his loss.

Well we still miss him out there but thanks to our second tiers the damage is very slight indeed. All our second tier mids have stepped up to fill the breach. Sidebottom's rise can be expected but nonetheless praiseworthy, Blair has lifted to become a dangerous small but the biggest revelation is young Dayne Beams.

Up until this year cast in the role of a small forward with limited on ball minutes this year he was sent to the coal face to see what he was made of and the answer seems to be - good stuff!

His game this week must go part of the way to answering his critics who say he doesn't produce in finals. True its still H&A but that was a finals match in intensity and endevour and he stood tall, took them all on and did us proud.

I'm certainly Beaming with delight :thumbsu:

Let's be honest, we all knew he was going to be good, I just don't think many of us expected him to become such an absolute gun as quick as he has given the mnidfield he was trying to crack into.

I mean, we already had a decently deep midfield, but we actually now have 2 starting midfields. Most teams are thankful to have one.

Pendles, Swan, Ball
Beams, Sidebottom, Thomas

I mean, seriously, that's f**king ridiculous and unfair.

Also Wellingham and Blair would also make it into a hell of a lot of teams

Beams' effort on Saturday in, as has been described, a real finals-like game, is testament to his current status as one of the league's most promising young midfielders. It is why I have shuffled my "must sign" list to focus as number one priority on Beamsy. He is critical to our success and will only benefit more from the return of Bally next year.

1- Beams
2- Reid
3- Cloke

The reason I have clokey as third is cause I just dont think he is going anywhere. I am worried about Reid. But why the f would any young, high performing and ever improving player leave the pies?

Beams has really shown a level of maturity in his performances that is inspiring. Sidey has been sensational, but has drifted in and out of the last couple of games, unlike Beamsy. He has just been consistently good, improving every week, and damaging teams on the scoreboard. Easily BOG against the Weagles.

When we have Pendles back, my god, there isnt a team that could come close to having the midfield depth that we have :)

I don't agree. As far as I'm concerned this is just about expected output given a clean run of health and a full time midfield role. He'd been getting 20+ touches and a goal a game already playing on a forward flank with stints in the midfield.

I have no idea why people are more surprised by Beams' ascent than Sidebottoms. I have been FAR more suprised by how good Sidebottom has been. He had been far more inconsistent with his form than Beams prior to this year.

Most have thought that Sidey had the greater upside because of his 'big game' record, Beams put that to bed this week, both have great potential and are rapidly fullfilling it.

I guess I agreed as I wasn't entirely sold on Beams; however, I am so glad I have been proven to have doubted when doubt was not needed, only some time and hope.

At the end of the day, both of them are and continue to be, crucially important for us, and their constant improvement should make the other 17 teams shit their pants - Carlton especially.

I can see it already... After Pendles wins the brownlow this year, and Dasiy wins his next year... the following year, joint winners Beams and Steele :)

... a man can dream.

Looking even further forward, Fas - who looked fairly reasonable in his first prolonged run in the middle this week has the tools to make it big time. Time will tell of course but we have had a seriously good run at unearthing midfield talent. :thumbsu:

I don't think Finals performace has anything to do with upside. In fact it's a bad predictor of future performance in anything other than future finals, and even then it's not very good, simply because it is small sample size. H&A season Beams has without question been superior to Sidebottom, and the larger sample size to me said he was more capable of sustaining his form with more consistency.

And if you are talking about big games outside of finals, Beams has been pretty good in some of the big H&A matches against top sides. Which to me said his ability under pressure was fine.

Plus I've always thought Beams would be the better players because his skills are more damaging i.e. more penetrating kick, and more able to win his own ball inside. Sidebottom is more creative certainly, but not by anywhere near the margin people think. Beams has always had pretty good vision himself, particularly with the handball.

Couldn't care less who was right or wrong just glad to see the lad doing the job.

Yep 3 elite mids, 3 A graders and 2 B+ although Wellers still isn't consistent enough for my tastes.

I think the isue with Wellingham isnt consisrency its opportunity. He has shown enough times that absent the top liners he can step it up and take one of the lead roles and do it with style. When they are back though he is playing more minutes as a HFF instead.

Been a huge fan of Beams since he arrived, has magnificent poise, gets his own ball, good inside and good decision maker. Really blossoming and I have no doubt he will be an AAA+ Grader, GET HIM SIGNED UP NOW!

It was one of the things that always struck me about the two best teams of the last decade.

Brisbane: Voss, Akermanis, Black - 3 real best in the league quality midfielders in the one team, with backup like Power, Lappin on marginally behind. etc. 3 Brownow medallists in one midfield!

Geelong: GAJ, Bartel, Selwood, Chapman - once again, with backup like Corey, Enright, Ling, still A graders.

Now with Swan, Pendlebury, Thomas, Beams, Sidebottom - we have 5 who could become genuine competition wide greats, plus Ball, Wellingham, Blair - we have simply too much quality for anyone to cover. And I dont think it is out of the realms of possibility that any of Pendles, Sidey, Beams, could win a brownlow during their careers.

Beams stepping it up to A+ just adds so much not just because of his own contribution but in how much it makes the midfield as a unit.

We basically have two topline midfields with the plus of the top 5 being able to hit the scoreboard HARD, Swan often goes forward to break a tag now and can kick 2 or 3. Pendles is a 2 or 3 goal player given the opportunities, Thomas ditto and Sidey and Beams as well. In fact there's not any of the 8 that aren't dangerous when they rotate forward :)

Not surprised, he's played a lot of good games in his 3 years. 6th in a premiership year in his 2nd year, a magnificient record against Geelong in a lot of tough matches in that time, this is probably the sort of form you could predict. All that was missing was that he wasn't pick 3 in the draft, if he was, it'd be "yeah this is the player we though we were getting".
