Beating the Bulldogs

OK everyone- nooses, guns, razorblades and poison away. It's time to pick a side that can beat the Dogs and revenge our PATHETIC and EMBARRASSING "effort" against them late last season.

My suggestion is that we drop Eddie, Lance, Watt and Harro  . Send Harro back for two weeks of 120 minutes of non-stop fitness running on the ball for Port. We can't carry him if he's not fit (he's our Dean Rioli, except his problems are caused by injury not too much McDonalds).

Harding comes in (LAST chance) and so do Perkins, Jesse Smith and Hamish.

I'd rather not win another game and blood our youngsters than finish 10th to 12th AGAIN. At least a low ladder finish entitles us to an early draft pick.

Nothing against Corey M. At his best Corey would be a certainty in our current side. If he stars for Port we must play him. But until he does, he stays where he is.

Reality check. We're 5-2, our best start to the season in ages. We just dropped a game which can be attributed to a single quarter blow out against the reigning premiers, played in Adelaide. No need for wholesale changes.

My preferred changes are simple. Drop the 2 most out form players, and bring in 2 in form players to replace them.

Out: Pratt & Petrie
In: Smith & McIntosh

I want my team to win games, and put the best team on the track each week - not chase early draft picks.

Croft isn't playing this time...that will help some. ;)

Did anyone see the Lions V Dogs game? How did they win?

I would give Corey Mc a game...a 'last chance rant' and see how he responds.

Eddie needs a break.

If Harro is injured then give him a break, but if not give him some more game time in the centre.

Don't mind Lance too much this year.

Reality check. We're 5-2, will be 5-6. I want kangaroos to win too, but unless we do well in the 2nd half, early draft picks are coming.

Couldn't agree more. Hack at the side and make multiple replacements when they are doing nothing and/or struck by injuries. Otherwise keep it as stable as possible and work on getting a good team of good players to play better and more consistently together.

Laidley's post-match comments seem much more targeted at players who have been playing well, will keep their spots and need to lift, rather than at players who were on their last chance.

Great if there are players at Port fighting realistically for spots, and even better if that means we can cover injuries - not great if we kept chopping and changing just for the sake of it.

Dogs won by their leg speed and running game, lots of men in space, end to end without lions touching the ball. We will be in trouble with the way we playing now.

You're being unusually optimistic, zoomer - why not just pencil in 5-17 now? Or maybe 5-16-1, with a lucky draw against Collingwood to come?

"Reality" is what has actually happened, not what anyone predicts for the future.

reality check for you. kangaroos are not as good as 5-2 suggests.

Sounds like how they beat us at the Dome last time.

I think we can bounce back...the two trips to AAMI would be a pain in the neck for the players...as it has been for US!

Back in familiar surroundings this week, and the heat will be on down at Arden St this week for a few from JYD and associates.

Reality is what we are seeing so far, week by week. It involves a lot more than just looking at the ladder. We have won several close games that we could easily have lost. We have lost a lot of individual quarters. We have played like crap in the last two weeks. One of the teams that thrashed us are smugly referred to as "our bitches" on this board. We have players in our team who couldn't hit the broad side of a barn if they tried etc etc. More importantly, we want to win a flag sooner than later!!! If some of the current 22 can't win a flag for us (or would be a risk in a grand final) we should be juggling the team around until we get the right mix of players.

It is not about "wholesale changes" or playing for draft picks or being pessimistic, it is about rewarding players for their efforts and trying to build a side that can win a flag. Harding was BOG, give him a game. Eddie was shocking again, drop him. Watt falls over all the time and does dumb things- out he goes until he learns and bring back Hamish. Lance played less than half the game- enough said, unless he was injured. Harro is not himself- get him fit playing for Port and then play him for the whole game or most of it.

We have had a stable line-up most weeks apart from injuries and it's time for a few changes.

reality is that north melbourne are 5 and 2.

the rubbish "not as good as 5-2 suggests" argument is similar to the one that says that essendon were a better team than north in 99 and should have one the granny that year. maybe they should have but they didn't.

reality is that north are 5 and two. having said that, reality also says that we are not playing winning footy in may!

Well done Lidge, your the first person to notice that we were playing last years Premiers.

i know that they have been playing crap, but as Premiers they had to be capable of turning it on sooner or later, pity that it it had to be sooner for us. :(

Didn’t seem to bother the Bulldogs playing the runners up at their home ground.

It should be an interesting game, with both of us starting the rebuilding around the same time. Sure they beat us twice last year, but it’s a new year, we are 1 year further on with our rebuild. They went youth/ bottoming out route and even wasted picks on Rawlings it seems, we have gone the play experienced guys/recycle/blend of youth/middle of the table rebuild route. Lets hope our method produces not only this week, but more importantly producing a premiership team.

have a listen to you all we are sitting 5-2 and you are all writing us off yes we havent played that well over the last 2 weeks but give the guys a break i wonder if geelong, richmond and melbourne supporters are talking about their team like this who have won as many games us, yes they maybe playing better football than us but they havent travelled to adelaide the last two weeks have they

This is what i would like to see this week:

In: Perry( who played well in the twos according to the posts),
Smith( has been knocking on the door for 3 weeks),
Perkins(played very well in the wiz and was bog in the twos)
Harding( played well on the weekend)

OUT:
Sansbury( like the boy and will be a player for us but needs to play in the twos after a couple of poor performances)
Watt: well he has had his chances. Time for Perry to show us what he can do.
Pratt:see Sansbury
Stevens: A bit of a disappointment the last 2 weeks. Still a fan but needs a week in the twos and give Smith a crack.

I know its alot of changes but i feel they are warranted.

This thread is supposed to be about beating the doggies. We (the match committe and us here on BF) can make no changes at all, or we can make one or two, or we can get a bit drastic and try to turn things around (3+).

(By the way, going to Adelaide to beat Port used to be a breeze. Now when we go over there it's to play last year's premiers.) Excuses don't win matches. That's why it's time for a few changes.

Well said Lidge. No panic just yet IMO.

OK, back to the thread title.

The Doggies did as mentioned above and ran their backsides off, with slick handball and good spacing and numbers. They played a very quick and small forward line which ran and fought and ran and fought and made life very tough for the Lions defenders, particularly if they made a stuff up. The Dogs made a real commitment to their second efforts and really made the lions pay for mistakes. They also took away time and space for the usually free running creative Lions backmen. It completely smothered their older legs.

Down back they went that extra mile to create extra numbers and to harass. Once they gained possession they did to the Lions exactly what Port did to us in the second quarter.............played keepings off and worked hard to retain possession right down the length of the field.

We really are going to have to work our collective ar$e$ off this week and we absolutely MUST have a strong representation from our key forwards and much better delivery from our on ballers. If we stuff it up, we will pay bigtime!!

C'mon Roo boys.......LIFT!!!!!!!!! and I dearly hope we out number and out yell their supporters at the Dome as well. WE can at least do what's within our control..............make a lot of noise!

I'm agree T'toes. They seem to run like thier children's life is on the line. And the pressure factor is one HUGE element of thier game that concerns me greatly.

This game was more doubtful in my mind than either SA teams a few weeks ago and now it looms as 'FINALS AUDITION' time as the Dogs will feast on the lazy Roo ways and RUN RIOT >>> not building myself up for this one >> North will have to come out and completely Surprise me for the better. If North can't arm wrestle this one out, we're gonna be brutal on them next week.

We'll win.

Deano will not get a better chance to play Hamish all season either, so he had better take it.

Not sure using the Adelaide trip is an excuse in the modern game, but I do agree this last two weeks has been a task on this basis.

1. The week before the Crows game they got beaten by the Bulldogs by 5 goals. At that time another loss would have them in trouble. Coming up against an angry Crows at home is no easy ask and we nearly got away with the game.

2. Port had thrown away a 1st Qtr lead against Tigers and got belted by 9 goals. Then we play them at home and kick terribly for goal in the first half.

Just wonder how things might have been if both the Crows and Power had of won the week before playing the Roos.

I am not sure it's time for panic (and changes) under the circumstances and I am not convinced that the Port boys have stood up consistently enough to justify a promotion.

My guess is that the Bulldogs will come up against a very passionate, committed 22 players this week if there are no changes.

JYD let the 'passengers' word after the game vs Adelaide and this week pipes up that some players aren't playing for the jumper. (that's funny as it gets >>> playing for the jumper  when you're getting enough $$$$ it's more about coming good before the next contract) But, as JYD should say, playing for the jumper >>> play for the fans who cough up thier hard earned and the punters like Wrath that want some dividends from all the hard work >>> that's why you lift all those weights and attend footy clinics >>> it's for the jumper, I'm sure. :)

How can you drop Stevo Jr? He has been the only player the last two weeks to run the lines and deliver laces out to the forwards or even kick goals himself!!
