For me, tonight has been the first time he has actually looked like he belongs in the team. His over head marking was strong and looked composed whenever he had the ball.

Re: Ben reid's best ever game!

I agree, though I am still concerned when the ball hits the deck...So does he. That moment where he went to ground trying to paddle the ball in front of him when against Thomas (I think)... was exactly why we need him to work on staying on his feet. He had the size in the contest and just made it Null.

Sure that will surely come with experience.

Ben Reid has arrived as a player and looks set for a long, successful career you'd think.

Re: Ben reid's best ever game!

Fantastic tonight, i am so used to seeing our fullback being shocking kicks, really refreshing.

Re: Ben reid's best ever game!

He is only going to get better. He will have games this year where he is beaten and played bad lets hope people remember he is still young and take time to be a week in week out star defender.

Tough next week with Presti coming back! Brown looks like he might be the one to make way.

Re: Ben reid's best ever game!

Needs to stay in. Has a few things in his game that can be cleaned up with games - sometimes should punch and goes for a few too many high risk kicks.

Re: Ben reid's best ever game!

One of the Channel 10 commentators mentioned that MM had said of Reid that he would be a 200 game player. Didn't know that. Been a slow developer though.

Backing your own ability is not a bad thing. Some more experience under afl pressure and he'll be nailing a lot more of those higher risk kicks, or just be choosing a better option. I thought his first half was great. Good work Benny!

Re: Ben reid's best ever game!

Was very good. I'm confident he'll improve at keeping his feet/not over committing so much. Took some nice grabs tonight and offered plenty of rebound.

Re: Ben reid's best ever game!

I think he has been good in all his senior games but was great tonight, N.Brown also holding his own without racking up the stats.

my thoughts exactly.... can wait to see how good reid and brown will be in tandem after 30 more games together...

He was great tonight, confident enough to run off his man and chop out a few other blokes which I found really impressive. You can tell we are really keen to start filtering the play through him from the back half.
Just leaves our opposition with another dangerous rebounder to have to watch. Defensive part of his game is improving every week as well.

Been a slow developer though.

How do you figure that? Was the youngest bloke in the league when he was drafted and has successfully completely switched ends of the ground after starting as a forward. Runner up in the VFL BnF in his first season as a back.
If anything, I'd say he has picked up playing as a backman extremely quickly. Not to forget he was a pretty skinny, lanky kid when he first showed up.

He is tracking brilliantly imo.

Re: Ben reid's best ever game!

After looking lost last week he then came out and played a more natural game tonight. He looks silky when playing in the VFL. I think its a confidence thing so he is only going to get better :thumbsu:

Re: Ben reid's best ever game!

The tough question is. WHO GOES OUT FOR PRESTI?

Ben Reid was very good in an attacking sense of half back tonight, looked more like the VFL finals player of last year, probably for the first time at senior level.

He still has to improve his defensive awareness though, made a few errors in manning up at times, and went the wrong direction a few times, but give him another 15-20 games and that will be ironed out.

MM was right, we are going to be a much better team once Nathan Brown and Ben Reid have 50 games under their belt each.

After tonight, I think it's officially time to say, BOTH WILL MAKE IT.:thumbsu:

Re: Ben reid's best ever game!

I think he showed a glimpse at what he could be for us tonight. His best defensive game for the club. He has speed, awareness, is good when the ball hits the deck and a great, penetrating flat field kick. Invig is spot on saying he gives us another rebounder for oppo teams to worry about. Shaw, O'Brien, Maxy, Reid and Johnno is formidable and difficult to contain. Really though it's still early days for Reid, he still has plenty of development ahead of him and will have his dirty days. He needs to get better in body on body contested situations. Also, it needs to be taken into consideration he was up against Edwards tonight with poor delivery so not the biggest challenge. I really hope we continue to persist with him.

Re: Ben reid's best ever game!

I'm not sure we need Presti again.

Freo play Mayne out of FF, with Pav playing a little higher up the ground. I'm not really too sure who he'd go to?
I'd be inclined to stick with the two youngsters again.

Something important we must all remember is he will have good days and bad days for a little while yet. When he creeps up around 50 games is when he'll really start to settle correctly.

Our backline is in great hands. I don't think Brown has had a goal kicked on him since returning.

The tough question is. WHO GOES OUT FOR PRESTI?

Great question and tough to answer!!! Almost deserves its own thread. From a philosophical perspective i'd have to say hands down Reid. But from a form perspective i'd have to say Brown edges him, and that not taking anything from Reid as i'm a big wrap for his performance. Browns been better defensively - and improved in his rebound - but Reids been phenomenal around the ground. Tough tough question. The real question is who takes the rampaging Pavlich???

Quoted for it's considerable wisdom :thumbsu:

Presti can hang out in the 2's for a while longer.
