Ben Simmons will be an NBA bust

Was waiting for someone to bump this.

But lets be honest - most of us called this thread as bullshit the moment it was started.

He has surprised me with his scoring slightly, but I forgot that he is a very clever basketballer. He pushes so hard in transition and doesn't use his jumper because his smaller opponent can't stop him in isolation going to the rim, and even though it's not the sexiest move, his hook shot is actually pretty money.

Watch Stan van Gundys post match interview, he confessed he couldn't plan for Simmons and it was very frustrating. This will be common place Sneijder said the same thing in the pre-season.

He will only get better shooting and using that body to go harder at the rim. 20/10/8 looks very realistic in an All star rookie year tbh.

Glad I never thought he'd be a bust, he just continues to thrive each time he steps up a level.

Still wouldn't surprise me if he averages around 15 a game for the season. Think teams will begin to get a better idea of how to defend the Sixers as the year goes on. Must say though his ability to get into the paint and create space for easy little floaters and hooks is incredibly impressive. Basically a matchup nightmare for defenders, particularly with his athletic ability which I think we all underrated.

Still if he goes 15ppg with 8-9 assists and 8-9 boards then gee you'd have to be very impressed.

Has all the tools to tear the game apart..obviously very early but the signs are extremelely promising
Well one of the tools that he will need to consistently "tear the game apart" is a consistent jumper from 15 feet out...He doesn't have that yet.

In terms of the rest of the elements of his game, its impressive stuff and he's the best prospect philly have by the length of the straight.

Yep, he really needs to develop a jumper. If he does he's an amazing prospect going forward (he's damn good mind you).

He'll be able to control the game with ease.

Total player, only idea is slow down game into half court slag and passive double team him in the back court and force the ball out of his hand.

To all the haters, you seriously don't understand basketball.

Believe he is now 47% on that mid range jumper. Sure you need a bigger sample size, but he is taking and making them. Even if he had a consistent jumper, he's still better served only taking a few to keep defenses honest and driving to the basket, since he can do so at will. His free throws are the biggest concern right at this point in time. He will want that at around 70% like it was in college.

And he's not a better prospect than Embiid. If you take health into consideration, sure. But on pure talent, Embiid has Shaq like upside with a jumpshot. Embiid has had no pre season, and is literally still working into shape, hence looking way more rusty compared to last season, but still putting up great numbers in slightly restricted minutes. If he can get through the next 2 months getting into shape while staying healthy, the Sixers are a playoff team.

Agree that embiid is an absolute monster but imo (unless there is an obvious gulf between them) simmons will always be regarded as the better player because his game is "sexier"

I'm not sure where you're pulling that number from on his mid-range and what you're defining as mid-range. He would have taken a handful of shots from 10-16 feet. That's not even a sample at all.

I definitely incorporate players' durability when I assess their worth. That is why I have Simmons over Embiid. There has never been a time in Embiid's career where he hasn't had constant injury red flags. With that said, Embiid definitely has more importance to Philly's overall team structure considering they have no real quality cover at center if he goes down, and have seemingly given up on Okafor. Their defense suffers greatly with him gone, and they return to lottery dwellars with potential if he injures himself again. That's an aside to discussing simmons though.

Simmons shooting percentages by distance (after 6 games).

0 - 3 feet: 66.7%
3 - 10 feet: 42.9%
10 - 16 feet: 37.5%
16 - 3pt: 0%
3pt: 0%

For some reason the data hasn't been updated for his latest game, where he shot 66.7% on 10/15 shooting. Nevertheless, it's clear that his mid-range game is still relatively weak, particularly beyond 16 feet.
