Interesting team.

You don't think Howard, Carlisle, Battle, King, Membrey, Marshall and Ryder is a little too top heavy?
It's not that different than what most teams field.

Two tall backs - Howard and Carlisle
Two tall forwards - King and Ryder
Mid sized forward - Membrey (188cm)
Ruckman - Marshall

Battle (193cm) has an elite tank and will play all over the ground. Many teams have midfielders taller than him.

My guess based off starting teams at training recently.

FB: Wilkie Howard Long
HB: Roberton Carlisle Clark
C: Billings Steele Hill
HF: Gresham King Lonie
FF: Membrey Ryder Butler
R: Marshall Ross Hannebery
I/C: Jones Battle Dunstan Sinclair

Unlucky - Webster, Coffield, Kent, Savage.

Dunstan and Sinclair the two who are less likely to be named, with either Webster or Kent replacing them.

I don't think Geary will be ready for rd1.

Fair enough. Membrey probably approaches "tweener" status in his playing style also.

I think the only issue with the North side is whether we go in with 2 or 3 defensive talls.

Daw has been very good at North training so far.

It is hard to pick with only a few injuries at the moment . Robbo played full match sim so he will be right to go , same with Hannebery. Geary , Webster and Parker probably doubtful for round one .

FB - Robbo, Howard , Wilkie
HB - Jones , Carlisle, Long
C. - Hannebery , Ross , Billings
HF - Kent , Membrey , Hill
FF - Ryder , King , Lonie
R. - Marshall , Steele , Gresham

Membrey definitely plays taller than he his so I would expect you to play 3 defensive talls. If you stick a smaller defender on Membrey, he will easily out mark them (see whenever Melbourne try playing Hibberd on him). I'm hoping with us playing 3 talls this year, Membrey will get matchup some better match ups since most teams 3rd tall isn't accountable enough for a player like him.

Who do you think Daw is the best match up for?

It would be great for him and Roberton to both make their unlikely comebacks in the same game. Fingers crossed they both happen.

Okay,

Membrey, I reckon Pittard can go with him as he can also play tall (188cms vs 186cms), and could also go with him on the lead.

If that leaves Marshall/Ryder & King then I would currently go with Tarrant & Daw respectively.

Hosie/Mahoney any chance?

#SuperCoach

I wouldn't think so yet. Hosie being the more likely candidate at this stage.

I reckon Bonar will debut as a forward/mid, but don't expect too much #SuperCoach wise at this stage.

If you want a smokey for your SC bench, then get on Bailey Scott. This kid can find the ball and WILL end up being an elite level wingman. ;)

Those match ups would be a massive win for Membrey.

Possibly. We may play another tall. I'm far from certain about anything defence related yet, as it's the area where we have tactically made the most changes.

There'll be less run & gun out of the North backline under Shaw (which killed us on the turnover in past seasons), and more emphasis on ball control coming out of defence a la the Swans game plan. I wouldn't expect too much space in the StKilda forward line.

Webster would be stiff to miss out if fit imo.
One of our quicker small defenders with aggression / tackling and has good disposal.
I'm hoping Webster can have a strong showing in the preseason games.
At his best, I have him as our best mid/small defender. He just never seems to get a clear run at it without another injury occurring.

It will be an interesting match up since thats the opposite of what we are looking to do - the inclusions of Hill, Jones, Butler and moving Long to the backline have us all in on speed and fast ball movement.

Yep, this is where we will need to focus and where I see StKilda's edge in winning the match.

If we can hold that lot reasonably well, then I think we can grab the points. Particularly Hill & Billings on the wings.

Yeh that's our conundrum at the moment. Playing King is important to get games into him but he also ruins the tall balance as you can't really be starting Ryder off the bench when most teams rotate 4 running players through the bench and leave their talls on almost all game.

No doubt. We might start off the year with all of them but by midway through the season one or two will make way.

Battle membrey and Marshall play smaller than they are. Outstanding tanks. Very agile. Marshall is our best inside mid.

Membery is that height but he plays like a tall. Doesn’t get ground balls like a gunstan type. Rather battle than Ryder but it isn’t happening. Think we are one tall to many. That may change if battle can play elsewhere. The only time it was tried he failed but that’s unfair on him.

I think it's reasonable to give it a shot, and see if they can make it work - particularly when we're under the roof with favourable conditions it could be that we can make it a strategic advantage to us, particularly if guys like Battle/Howard can also rotate ends to fill needs.

If it doesn't work, the coaching staff are hopefully going to make the necessary changes and get the balance right.
