Of course; but only because he's younger. At 26 years of age, he's just coming into his prime now, as Dusty was in 2016.I'll concede Petracca improved dramatically over the last couple of years, but he's a long way off Dusty status.
We'll see how well you handle the hunted status.
Let's hope so. Still a big question mark re: his injury how he will recover at 30 years old.Or he’ll be more motivated and inspired as he’s ever been.
Oh boy are you setting yourself up for a crash landing.Of course; but only because he's younger. At 26 years of age, he's just coming into his prime now, as Dusty was in 2016.
The tigers passed the baton over when we smashed your mob on ANZAC eve last year, and handled our status very well since, thank you very much.

If Stringer keeps up his form from the back half of the year he deserves to be in the discussion. 19 touches, 2 goals a game along with being the best centre clearance player in the comp for that period in terms of raw numbers and in terms of generating scores.
Not many guys impacting games to that level.
You keep saying this but it's a silly comment.
Oliver isn't ''better'' than Petracca. Plenty of Dees fans might think Oliver is more consistent, or valuable, but that's highly debatable.
Oliver had the better year, which is different to being a ''better'' player.Well the demons coaches all agree with me. I'd say they know the players pretty well. lol
and Sam Frost has a different skillset too, so you're saying you can't compare players? nonsense.Oliver had the better year, which is different to being a ''better'' player.
Surely that's not too nuanced for you.
They're different players with different skillsets. It's very difficult to split them on a value basis.
Martin was averaging 22+ disposals and over goal a game before he went down with injury last season.Martin is a champion footballer but not sure you can seriously put him at #1 when he did nothing of note in 2021 and is coming off a horrid preparation for a number of reasons. Think the mantle of best player in the game is as open as it has been since probably 2014-2015 though, which is a good thing.
I'm tempted to put him in but I just can't trust him to have a full season at that level.
Martin was averaging 22+ disposals and over goal a game before he went down with injury last season.
To put it in perspective, He has done that 10 times, Petracca has done it once (last season), The Bont has done it 3 times, Wines is yet to achieve it yet (hasn't scored enough goals each season).
So on the nothing of note last season remarks........
Please read.I think the best player is Oliver, but it is very close between Oliver, Petracca and Bontempelli. Oliver is just so consistent. Last year he had over 100 Supercoach points in 20/25 games and no games less than 23 possessions.
The only other player in the conversation IMO is Dustin Martin. Martin is a champion but he has been slipping down the AFL rankings in terms of disposals since 2017 and IMO he has maintained his status in recent years off the back of great finals games. I doubt he has the running ability to average 25+ possessions per game anymore, which I think he needs to do to return as the best player in the competition. The Tigers really need this type of output from him to get back into contention. (I doubt they have the midfield to contend without Dusty at his best.) The other thing about Martin is he is very much a one way player. Last year he averaged 2.25 tackles, which was 264th in the AFL. Martin is probably the best ball user in the competition (or at least top 10) but he needs to find more of the ball again given he is poor defensively.
You do say some silly things.and Sam Frost has a different skillset too, so you're saying you can't compare players? nonsense.
Ok so Oliver had the better year but Petracca has really only been good for 2 seasons because he was wasting away on the half forward line for most of his career. Oliver won the best n fairest in his 2nd season..
I think maybe more absurd is that you think I suggested it wasn't close. Go on, re-read the thread and tell me where I said Oliver is far superior to petracca. You do say some silly things.
I'm well aware of the history of both, but this thread isn't about that. It's about the here and now.
Seeing as you like history lessons...
In the last two years they've both won a B&F and one has made AA two years running and the other only in 2021. Petracca two years running.
One has won the AFLCA player of the year and the other a Norm Smith medal and Anzac eve medal.
One averaged 31 disposals and kicked 12 goals and the other averaged 29 disposals and kicked 29 goals.
Both top 3 in contested possessions. One is more brilliant and the other the best inside player in the game.
It's close. To suggest otherwise is an absurdity.

You take delight in saying Oliver is ''better'' any chance you get. Not just this thread. It's monotonous and unnecessary. Especially for two players that are difficult to separate.I think maybe more absurd is that you think I suggested it wasn't close. Go on, re-read the thread and tell me where I said Oliver is far superior to petracca.
Lies, damn lies and statistics. Possessions are irrelevant if they're crap possessions.I think the best player is Oliver, but it is very close between Oliver, Petracca and Bontempelli. Do yourself a favour, watch the Rd23 2019 game between Richmond and Brisbane at the MCG.
Just to give you a leg up, Lachie Neale had 52 possessions. Dusty probably half. Watch the game and tell me whose possessions you'd take.
I'll give you another leg up, watch him burst through the middle and goal on the run. Watch him burst through the middle and hit Riewoldt on the chest with a 50m spear pass resulting in a goal. Watch him don't argue 2 Brisbane players and goal around his body when the game was back in the balance near the end. All this as Lachie Neale was gathering stats with 5m backward handballs. LOL.
I'm not dismissing Oliver at all. He is very much in the conversation. And a big reason why Melbourne achieved what they did in 2021.Goal assists over their career averages:
Dusty 0.7
Oliver 0.6
Dusty is one of the best players of the modern era and will go down as an all timer, but you don't watch football at all if you think Oliver gets meaningless possessions.
You clearly only watch Richmond games.Lies, damn lies and statistics. Possessions are irrelevant if they're crap possessions.

My response was more along the lines that supercoach points and possessions are meaningless if they're crap. It's folly to measure the greatness of a player by possessions alone. On this I'll have a crack at 2 Brownlow Medalists. Mitchell and Neale. Possession gatherers, yes. Match winners, no. Case in point is when Mitchell was shopped around pre-draft last year for no takers. Zip. I reckon they'd be 17 other clubs kicking Richmond's door down if Martin was shopped around, even at 30 years of age.
How do you measure a players sheer presence on the ground? How do you measure the fear and mental torment going through a players head when he finds himself one out with Dusty in our forward line?
I find it a bit rich when clowns on this thread don't even have the best player of recent times in their top 20. No idea. Laughable. Dusty's not finished yet.
You miss the part where they were also his numbers before being injured last year. Because apparently he wasn’t going well. Surprised reading and comprehension isn’t a strong point for a Melbourne supporter (but not surprised by the arrogance). So Martin was in the best player in the game discussion for 10 seasons? OK
You clearly didn't read post #121You clearly only watch Richmond games.
Oliver has red hair and wears no.13. He just had the most contested possessions in an AFL season.
He never gets the cheap possessions that a Tom Mitchell, Neale or some others specialise in.
