Who had the best year in the year that they won the Rising Star Award (Ron Evans Medal)?

PLEASE NOTE, this is not about who is the better player now , or who turned out the best (Buckley, Cousins, Riewoldt, Goodes etc.), but merely who had the best breakout year when comparing all the past winners.

For me it was Nick Riewoldt. He absolutely dominated as a mobile tall in that year, and had to beat guys like Chris Judd, Luke Hodge and Shaun Burgoyne who all did very well in their first year. Not to mention he took the most marks of ANY player in the AFL that year, and won the Saint B&F.

my bad

voted before i read this

I went for Palmer.

Rioli was ace in 08, and if Palmer was better than him then he's got this poll stitched up.

Bucks, clearly, IMO.

Roo had 21 goals in 2002, the same as Bucks managed as an onballer. In fact, if it wasn't for a 6 goal haul in the last round v Melbourne, Roo's goal scoring stats aren't anything to write home about, especially for a young KPF.

My top 5:

1. Buckley
2. Cousins
3. Hasleby/Palmer
5. Riewoldt

I cant remember Buckleys debut season as I was too young, but I've gone with him. I know he burst onto the scene in ridiculous fashion.

If not Bucks, then Reiwolt. He was sensational in his debut season despite being abit of a rake at the time.

You do remember Riewoldt spent a lot of time down back in his rising star year right?

I voted Riewoldt but I will freely admit I don't remember Buckley's debut season as I was too young. But I remember reading somewhere Bucks was older than modern day draftees when he debuted, can anyone confirm/deny this?

Not following Riewoldt or the Saints closely, I'll take your word on this. I assumed given he scored in 11 games that year he played at least half the year up front.

Buckley was 20, turning 21 the year he won. Riewoldt was 19, turning 20.
Others -
Scott - 17/18
Holland - 20/21
Cousins - 17/18
Wilson - 20/21
Pickett - 20/21
Goodes - 18/19
Haselby - 18/19
Koschitzke - 18/19
Mitchell - 20/21
Rivers - 19/20
Deledio - 17/18
Pearce - 19/20
Selwood - 18/19
Palmer - 18/19

Selwood. Only Rising Star Award winner to play in a premiership side the year he won the award, and for a 1st year player to have the most goal assists in the finals series is a remarkable achievement, especially when you consider the calibre of midfielders he was up against.

Winning a premiership in the year you won your award doesn't mean much.

It does if the team you're playing for finished 10th the year before.

Mitchell is vey hard done by.

He lead the league in clearances and disposals in his rising star year, narrowly missed out on AA (sums up most of his seasons actually) and basically kept the hawks in contention for finals after a dismal start to the 2003 season.
