He'd need to improve his kicking and no way would his body handle the sustained physical punishment like Gary week in week out, year in year out.
garys body didnt survive the punishment. He wrecked his knee early in his second season after he became a permanent full forward. His leap and pace was never the same again.

I don't recall that.

In his second season as a full forward (1994) he played 25 games and kicked 125 goals, his knee injury was prior to the 1997 season and he didn't play seniors again after that.

his knee injuries started in early 1994. Just because he could play on it didnt mean it wasnt injured. Watch video footage of ablett sprinting on a lead in 1993 and then again in the second half of 1994. The difference is staggering.

As I said I don't recall anything about him having knee problems at that time (not saying for sure he didn't though) but he certainly didn't "wreck his knee" as you said, you don't bugger your knee and continue performing at the standard he did.

I thought that was as much to do with hurting his back after the mark against Collingwood, plus in general from 1994 onwards he did tire towards the end of the season.

you mean the coaches who dropped him from the practise game to play an even younger and rawer player as a key forward. I reckon buzzas papers are already stamped.

Well, at least you identified 'some' of those who matter. No one would mistake you for being one of them. They can spell 'practice'..

"Dropped for a practice game..". Think about it. May take you a while.

Weren't 'Buzzas papers' recently stamped TWO MORE SEASONS?

yeah he buggered his body in more way then one. The Pert mark seems the defining moment when things changed although it could of also just been the wear and tear of being an undersized key forward. He looked seriously broken by the time finals started that season.

I would've thought Zuthrie as a Rookie may have been elevated ahead of O'Connor...

Then again, O'Connor looked good in the last JLT, perhaps we may see him improve heavily this season.

Either way, I think it is good we upgraded a defender to the squad for Narkle - just to improve depth balance.

hey guys do you see menegola as a lock for starting 22 or do you think he could get dropped throughout the year? cheers and good luck round 1!

Zuthrie doesn't need to be upgraded to play.

Depends on how you define a "lock". Some people refer to a 'lock' as players like Hawkins/Roughead/Dangerfield/Mitchell who are amongst the first selected. Other people use the term more liberally to refer to fringe players that they think are amongst the best 22 at the club, rendering the concept almost meaningless.

Menegola is not as talented as Dangerfield/Selwood/Ablett, but in 2017 he had 527 disposals in 22 games (better than everyone at Hawthorn apart from Mitchell), so I'd be surprised if he wasn't considered in Geelong's best 22.

Do we really want to be Grammar police here? I think not. We all know what the intent is... with going into nouns and verbs ...

I think Buzza is around for another couple but whether he elevates to afl ...is yet to be determined.. GHS signed for 3 a while ago too

Whilst you may be correct in the Oxford English cents, it may be wise to let these things slide. We all make mistakes and pointing them out in a condescending or aggressive sense may not be taken well.
Just a tip seeing you are a new here.

Posters have particularly long memories and your first whoopsie could see a reminder.

Locked. Finished 6th in our B&F.

Please laugh at this with me.

Dear hawthorn supporter,

According to champion data geelong has only 4 elite players in its squad for 2018.
Those 4 players in no particular order are:-
  • Patrick Dangerfield
  • Gary Ablett
  • Sam Menegola
  • Daniel Menzel
Depends how much stock you place in Champion data. Either way I'd say he'll be selected every week he is fit.

Although we did drop an elite forward for a qualifying final so anything is possible I guess...

Kind Regards,

How many people on here think Zuthrie or O'Connor could be best 22 this season?

For some reason I think Zuthrie and O'Connor are showing better signs than Thurlow.

I don't really care what Champion Data says. Our most valuable players when healthy in order are:
1. Danger
2. Ablett
3. Selwood
4. Duncan
5. Hawkins
6. Taylor
7. Henderson

With the far gap to the rest. Menegola to me is in the rest category but in the upper end of it. Not even close to a drop candidate, similar level to Touhy IMO.

I think Smith should be part of that list - to make it an even 8.

This. Ratugolea has shown more in his couple of games than buzza has, and the coaching staff have ratugolea ahead of buzza in the pecking order currently.

It’s almost mundane - being on the Money this often. Good luck to the big man on Sunday. Love that he’s playing round 1.

Our most valuable player is Hawkins. And it's clear cut.
