Hey guys,
I've never been to a Grand Final before and also never had a membership. I understand it is very hard to secure a ticket without being one. Is it possible to become a member this late and get at least Priority 2 access to buy GF tickets?

I know there is a public reserve sale, but from my understanding it is very unlikely to secure a ticket this way and also most likely to get quite an average seat...

What other options do I have?
Buy off a scalper?
Can you queue up outside a ticketing agency and purchase tickets in person?
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks.

I've been to four grand finals. Two of them I went into the membership "lottery" and got lucky, the other two I had to think outside the box.
One year, I heard that 3aw were going to be giving out tickets as prizes, the morning of the grand final outside the ground. Had to turn up early where they were broadcasting and bring a banner, and those with the best banners would win two tickets. I spent all week working on a banner, and BT picked me out of the crowd.
The other time, I was browsing bigfooty of all places, the morning of the GF, saw someone post that they had two tickets from a neutral club AFL player and that they wanted to sell them to a fan at cost price. I called the number as quick as I could, not really thinking it could be legit... But sure enough, met the bloke at a bar in st Kilda and walked away with the tickets.

Anyway, the moral of the story is, if you really want the tickets, they can be found.

It depends how much you want to pay. I’ve seen tickets for sale day of the game to some of those stupidly overpriced lunch then game events.

I've been to plenty of grand finals and it is very easy to get a ticket. You ring the AFL events office (that sell the GF packages) and pony up a minimum of $1,300 on a package (that includes a $150 face value ticket and a bit of other stuff to try and justify the price). The AFL are the actual scalpers.

If those are sold out (which I think they almost are for 2022) then try the clubs. Some (not many) re-sell some of their ticket allocation. West Coast does this and last time I went, they were about $1k instead of the AFL $1.3k.

Just out of curiosity, what kind of seats do you get for those packages?

Back in 2008, a mate of mine forgot to register in the GF ballot. He went to the pub instead. He ended up paying $1,500 to attend through the AFL - I paid $150. Remember to register in the GF ballot kids.

It's illegal to scalp GF tickets. There's no public tickets.

So OP - Rowan18 has the answer. Be prepared to pay $2,000 or so if you're not a member.

I have heard tales of people hanging around the marquees and buying a ticket off a drunk attendee but take that with a grain of salt. There was a rumour in 2008, that 1,000 standing room tickets were made available on the day but never verified by anyone I know.

Yep - I got standing room in 2018 members ballot and I'm not even sure it was $100. They were allocated at the same time as the rest of the allocation to members. I think the only reason we got in is that standing room isn't suitable for a lot of people.

Considering whether it’s worth purchasing a membership ($160) this late for the sole purpose of getting a GF ticket should my team compete.

Any help/experience appreciated!

Thank you 🙏

Many members pay big $$ for decades to ensure they will get a ticket if their team makes it.

Ballot at best for lower priority for Melbourne based clubs.

??? Never a public sale if it is a vic v vic game.

And worrying about the quality of your seat.

You cant queue up and just purchase a ticket to GF, especially not being a member.

If you want to go, buy an event package ticket - 1500+, perhaps 2500+ if you dont want a nosebleed seat.
