next year, pending the thornton outcome it looks like it will be lance setanta and bower

bower is basically untested but did some good things in the last game i thought.

would love to see him get locked into the 3rd forward matchup, or on someone like oloughlin, welsh, tarrant size player

is his speed good enough for this?

cant wait to see setanta running around again though

would setanta play chb and lance FB?
your thoughts....

Whitnall isnt a full back. He would be caught out on the lead every time.

He is a player that fills up the space and that is his best position down back

yeah fair enough, it will depend week to week on mathups though

people keep putting in hartlett, is he even fit? would have to have a big preseason. and does he have the size to go with a gehrig or rocca

If we lose Thornton (pretty likely), then our options for FB are as follows (in no particular order):

a) Polak: not really a FB, but then neither was Thornton
b) Livo: might just survive being delisted depending on trades/draft
c) Hartlett: might have to throw him in regardless of pre-season form and hope something special happens
d) Nathan Brown: least likely to be thrown in at the deep end
e) O'Hailpin: O.K. on the lead and overhead, especially if he bulks up some more. Gets turned easily....needs to learn the angles when chasing a player.
f) Have I missed someone?

Hartlett is the one that needs to step up if Thornton leaves. By all reports his preseason last year was great and unluckily got injured at the wrong time which ruined his chances.

Message to denis, let the big unit loose for some murder & mayhem:thumbsu: :D ....lol

Seriously, anyone got his dimensions, i vaguley remember seeing he was 195 and aournd 95kegs. Anyone confirm?

Also, my cuz is it brisbane and played with Harts & scum russell @ westies in adelaide.

I asked him after they were drafted and he said harts will be a gun and russell was soft!!!!!! So far he is right on the last one. Lets hope his predictions are spot on.

Cheers

Want him, give him scab tbirds money plug him @ CHF and watch him, jk and fev go to work. How cool, 2 big units, Polak (194) JK (198) to show some muscle in the future :)

Cheers

Neither Bower nor Setanta are big enough to play the FB role.

This is what I hope our backline will be:

FB: Setanta Hartlett O'Brien/Lappin

CHB: Bower Whitnall Scotland

Sentantas huge! and very quick for his size, he would make it! He gave one of the strongest FFs in Barry Hall a Bath. But id Prefer him at CHB!

Don't be surprised to see Waite thrown down back.

I remember an interview he did on radio during his injury forced layoff - where he mentioned that Pagan had raised that possibility with him.

This will especially occur if we miss out on Polak after losing Bret "boo hoo hoo I want more money" Thornton.

Yes, Setanta is big. But there is a differnce between tall/lanky and big.

Setanta is not big enough to play FB on power forwards. He didn't give Hall a bath at all, and he will get absolutely smashed week in week out if put on the likes of Lloyd, Brown, Richo, Rocca, Thompson, Tredrea etc.

He is MUCH more suited to running out of the backline, either from a flank or a pocket.

Put domeone at FB that has the body to play there, like Harts.

Yes, you have a point. Setanta is only 6'7" and 100kg. Too small for FB. :)

Come on parrot, be realistic.

Setanta has neither the smarts, experience nor the body type to play FB against the likes of Gherig, Thompson, Rocca et al. He would get smashed week in week out-not only do I not want to see that for the club and it's on field performances, but also for Setanta's confidence-why ruin it? We know he will become a player, and a pretty good one at that, running off the half back flank, so why tamper with it? Not a wise idea.

The fact is that Setanta does not have what it takes to be a key defender for us.

Setanta at CHB would be awesome... a rebounding CHB just like McKay used to be like... just need a damned good FB now to let the big unit run amok on the backline :D

Our much maligned defense has undergone an interesting transformation this year. I think we now have players that can turn this weakness into a strength. Bower and Setanta really gave us some height and pace in the latter part of the year. Lance and Walker have been good also. Hopefully Thornton stays, and we also have Hartlett who looked very promising before getting injured. :)

People underestimate Hartlett, when he is fit he is a class defender just ask Fev who he beats consistently in the preseason when he is fit, if he stays fit this year, and lets be honost his luck has to turn, then he will be our FB for years to come, has some really good size about him now, has filled out alot over the last 2 years and this run of injuries could just be a god send in terms of his progress as he has the size to not get beaten as easily as he would have 2 years ago. Hartlett will stand up.:thumbsu:

Agree. Hartlett has had a terrible run with injuries. Was almost certain to debut before a severe hamstring tear early in the year. He was extremely impressive in a pre-season game V Cats, when he played on Ablett. He has height, pace and excellent skills and alot of confidence. He will be very good. Is also a natural KP forward, and can be moved there if needed. :)

Definately need Setanta running off HB showing off that super bouncing style of his. Seeing him running off half back bouncing had me fist pumping the air earlier this year!
