A staple of the bigfooty Draft Forum has been our bi-season collaborative phantom draft efforts, where we gather Draft Watchers from around the forum and club boards to come together and get some names out there, as well as give an idea as to what supporters think clubs need in the coming off season. With School Competitions starting around the nation we thought it was a good opportunity to do our Mid Season run of the event.

Just some quick rules/ guidelines that we're going by for this;
- Will be using the Draft Order based on the Ladder at the end of AFL Round 7
  • For the Mid Season run there will be NO bid matching, meaning prospects like Will Ashcorft, Alwyn Davey Jnr, Max Michaelanny, etc. will go to the first club that wants them
  • There is no live trading
  • List sizes aren't an issue in this, a club like Gold Coast is free to take all 8 of their selections if they wish

With that out of the way, here are your list managers for this exercise;
Adelaide - ModernArtillery
Brisbane - ModernArtillery
Carlton - Arr0w
Collingwood - Pie 4 Life
Essendon - eDPS
Fremantle - Ysaye
Geelong - Chris25
Gold Coast - Bastyy
GWS - PMBangers
Hawthorn - Davo-27
Melbourne - foj1
North Melbourne - PMBangers
Port Adelaide - Macca19
Richmond - Smythe
St Kilda - Ysaye
Sydney - eDPS
West Coast - Monocle
Western Bulldogs - Wizard17

The Draft will commence late on Sunday (May 1st) or Early Monday (May 2nd) once Round 7 has finished, happy drafting!

Round 7 ladder has been finalised and the draft order is locked in, Monocle feel free to kick us off with Pick 1 whenever you're ready. A reminder to all list managers to please tag the next selector so this moves smoothly, and to give us a bit of a write up on your selection

Pick 1 - George Wardlaw

George Wardlaw . - Midfielder.

Be fair to say that West Coast need help on every line as they start their rebuild.

So I am taking a ball hawk that thrives on the cut and thrust of contested possession at the coal face. The kids harder than a cats head and it’s his relentless second/ third/ fourth efforts that are another point of difference to his game. King George will add some genuine inside grunt to a list that’s sadly devoid of any young inside mids. He won’t be able to do all the work needed, but he will be a good start.

To be honest this is a pick that based more so on current needs, as I actually think Lemmey, with his seniors experience with West Adelaide, may have his nose ahead for best player available and there is real merit when starting up a rebuild to get your tall's on the list first.

Like for all of us, it’s a shame that the Covid situation over the past two seasons has deprived us of of seeing the kids about the mark for the # 1. Pick missing out on showing their wares as a bottom aged players last year.

Alas it is what it is so we go with the little we know thus far.

PMBangers is now on the clock.

Pick 2 - Harry Lemmey
Pick 2 - North Melbourne
Harry Lemmey
199 cm | 93 kg
West Adelaide | SA
Key Forward

images (2).jpeg
Arguably the most recognisable prospect heading into the year, like the reigning Pick 1 selection Lemmey is a player that has been showing his craft in the SANFL Seniors since his bottom aged year, impressing woth his ability to impact at such a high level, at such a young age

A pretty traditional tall forward in the sense that he relies more on his smarts on the lead than height or athleticism, Lemmey reminds me of Josh Kennedy a bit in his style. Lemmey is aided by his strong hands and long arms which essentially guarantees he'll hold the mark if he manages to get in front of his opponent at speed.

To go with this, Lemmey is the definition of clinical in front of goal, reliably slotting his set shots at post height even from 50 meters out. He works up the ground and has a field kick that matches his set shot kicking, so even if he's not slotting them himself he's working hard to create goals.

In terms of his fit at North Melbourne, from my POV he offers a safe pairing with Larkey in the long run, despite their deep stocks of tall forwards I'd be backing Lemmey as the most 'sure' thing of the lot. I also considered Ashcroft and Tsatas but think they've got more than enough midfield coverage, and it felt a smidgeon too early for Busslinger, although he was the most highly considered along with Lemmey.

andleanback you're up with Essendon

Pick 3 - Will Ashcroft
I’ve been tasked with taking over the Essendon pick and it’s really only between 2 players and I’d be happy either way but I’m taking the player that is more likely to be a gun even at a club like Essendon 😂

Pick 3 - Essendon - Will Ashcroft
180cm 76kg
Sandringham Dragons/VIC Metro
Inside Midfielder

Now I know what your thinking Essendon fans “Another short midfielder” Well I have a few things to say to that

1. I like to take the best talent available with top picks as do many clubs

2. There isn’t a big inside mid at the very top of the draft at this stage, Tsatas is taller but his height doesn’t factor at all in his playstyle.

Now Ashcroft will very likely choose Brisbane as his destination and when you see Essendon as an option can you blame him? 😂 But just on Ashcroft and why he is rated among the very best, he is as driven as any player to come through the draft system and that will very likely hold him in good stead at the next level, he is tough and skilful and just a natural player and his clearances are amongst the most damaging in the draft and he can also hit the scoreboard regularly.

You can say Essendon have enough small midfielders sure but not many have the contested ability and drive on game day and he plays bigger than his height suggests never looking out of his depth playing on taller and heavier midfielders. He is just about the surest bet in the draft and my word do Essendon need some more ‘sure bets’ on the list.

Pick 4 - Harry Sheezel
Pick 4 - Harry Sheezel
184 cm | 77 kg
Sandringham Dragons | VIC Metro
General Forward/ Midfielder
images (5).jpeg

An electric forward that's impactful in the air and ground level, and has already begun to learn how to deal with extra attention, Sheezel is, hopefully, the long term successor to Toby Greene for GWS here. I rate Sheezel as one of the smartest players in the pool, everything from his leading patterns, to his timing, positioning and just instincts is already at a high level, and for a team lacking Forward half options currently it's too attractive of a prospect to not take when the opportunity is there.

What I also love above Sheezel is that he doesn't neglect his defensive duties, he works hard both ways and gets up the ground and impacts when he's not getting much done up forward, when you've been watching Bobby Hill for 4 years at AFL Level in your team, this stuff gets you genuinely excited.

It was really hard to look past Elijah Tsatas and Jedd Busslinger here, Tsatas on talent is clearly the choice for me here, but we are filled to the brim with midfielders currently, and probably can't afford to add a guy that doesn't have a good defensive game to that mix. Busslinger was harder to look past given I still think we need some young KPD options coming through, but I think there'll be suitable enough cover later on in the draft, especially with the clear forward half need

Bastyy up now

Pick 5 - Jedd Busslinger
Pick 5, Gold Coast - Jedd Busslinger (Tall Defender/Western Australia) (East Perth)

It honestly feels wrong to not pick Tsatas here (and it probably is wrong, but I'll leave that for the masses to decide) but looking at Gold Coast's list and it's profile I can't go past the Bus. There are a few handy defenders on that list (Collins is elite, then you have the likes of Ballard who isn't a true key defenderr size) but I think Busslinger would slot into that backline today.

Busslinger is a dominant rebounding tall defender who can turn a game around on his own. His ability to intercept is better than every tall defender in the draft and he's a huge size at 197cm. He's already produced three dominant performances from his three colts games this season and I believe once the national champs roll around we'll see very similar performances against the country's best

Macca19 is up

Pick 6 - Tom Scully
Pick 6 - Port Adelaide
Tom Scully 202cm KPF - West Adelaide

Hard pick this one as there's about 3 that I really like. Feels like a reach but jeez any time you can pick up an athletic 202cm, big marking, straight kicking key forward then you have to take it. His form this year has been undeniable. 3 bags of 7 and a bag of 6 is immense in anyones language. Reminds me a lot of a draft age Charlie Dixon. Has a good frame, great reach, sticky hands and a good kick.

Could have easily picked Clark or Hollands here.

ModernArtillery you are up with Adelaides pick mate

Pick 7 - Elijah Tsatas
Pick 7 - Adelaide
Elijah Tsatas
Midfielder
Oakleigh Chargers

Tsatas is just a superb athlete and a pretty handy footballer too. I get major Josh Kelly vibes watching him, as an outside leaning midfielder with great speed and absolute class by foot. I haven't seen a great deal of Tsatas on the inside but he's probably one of those rare prospects where I don't think I need to see it. I think he's far better utilised on the outside as a first or second receiver, as he just needs an ounce of space and he's gone, and likely hurting you with what he does.

Not only do the Crows get an elite prospect here, they fill a huge need with some size, speed and class through the middle of the ground.

Tsatas would have to be the dream from an Adelaide perspective

Pick 8 - Elijah Hewett
Pick 8 - Elijah Hewett - Swan Dist - 186cm 82kg - Midfielder

Elijah had an ok u17 championships last year, then started to perform at a high level at the u19's and finished the year as one of the better players in Swan Districts finals series and Premiership win, being the big bodied impact player in the Colts GF win, has had a good start to the season this year playing WAFL seniors and adapting quickly to the level, i was hoping Sheezel was available because a great forward would be a good get for Hawthorn and the other players i considered at the pick were Cadman and Munkara, but i couldnt ignore Elijah Hewett as his body of work and potential are quite high.

Wizard17 your turn

If we get him with our pick, I'll be on a 20-day bender.

Chris25 Hoping for a quality tall for us.

Brave pick with the Buss bastty but i love it...hes got class written all over him.

We’ll see. Might be disappointed early.

Busslinger would almost be my #1 this year, even if he doesn’t actually go there.

Shows how out of the loop I am, thought this kid was going top 3.

Pick 9 - Jackson Broadbent
Pick 9 - Western Bulldogs
Jackson Broadbent
Peel Thunder | WA
205 cm | 92 kg
Ruck

The Bulldogs' ruck woes have been long documented. Tim English is coming into his own, but he needs a partner in the ruck for the long term, and I've decided to pair him with a fellow WA boy. Broadbent's already tall for an AFL ruck despite not turning 18 until the end of the year, and had a crack in the ruck for the seniors last year at the age of 16; young rucks often take a while to come into their own, but I rate him highly and he'll be ready. He could be a big part of the Dogs' inconsistent fortunes changing.

Also considered: Isaac Keeler
