Milera was the clear and obvious selection at our pick, from basically the moment we got it in the trade. Everybody and their dog knew we were selecting Milera with that pick. It was the most obvious selection since Smith.

It's purely an injury issue with him. The skill set is there, but the continuity hasn't been. There doesn't seem to be much reason to assume otherwise now. If he can fight his way back into the side and stay healthy, great, but at this stage that feels like a pipe dream.

I think the obvious ones often end up screwing you. With Hamish I actually feel kind of relieved when he picks some bloke I've never heard of.

I'm not convinced, finished 10th in the BNF when he got a clean run in 2023. He is an average player. Maybe he would have been something more if he didn't decide to play a cruisy half back role.
woah, he didn't set the world on fire in his first season back after missing two with long term injuries? Delist him immediately.

He had been injured for ages prior to that. Not only did he have to deal with getting back into things, but it also stunted his AFL development. Who knows where he would have ended up with a clean run at it?

Sadly, he's pretty much on his last chance at the moment. If he can get back into the side and contribute, great... but my money is that he won't.

Yeah... but the problem with Milera isn't, wasn't, and never will be, a recruiting problem. It's injuries.
The problem is that it's poor value for money. Not all positions are created equally. You don't need top picks to get a decent half back. That's why that position is often used as dumping ground for people who failed in harder roles.

Can you imagine the outcry on here if we had pick 11 and used it on a HBF? People would be spewing.

Both he and Nicks have made it clear Milera's preferred position is half back. Unlike Keays or Dawson he's never said I'll play whatever role the coach wants me to play.

Think he could have been a decent forward, good agility, decent pace, classy, good goal sence in draft year/first year. But at half back I don't see the weapons, especially the long kicking of a Zorko, Dale, Houston, etc, or defensive craft.

If we had pick 11 and traded it for wanganeen-Milera I’m not sure there’d be outcry

Nank has been a very astute pick up. Has almost all bases covered in terms of a footballer now and should be a lock in our 22.

I think you're blind if you can't see that Milera has the tools to be a high quality AFL player. I think it's a pretty clear case of injuries derailing a career for him. Has never had any decent continuity. It's pretty hard to come back from long term injury and dominate over and over again with little experience under your belt. I'd happily give him another chance in the 22, but I think there's more than 50/50 chance his body will allow it. Next big injury either he calls it or we do.

Consider in 2019 we traded down and took McAsey instead of taking Ash at 3.

So there's been posts lamenting us not taking a half back with pick 3.
And in that same draft Hayden Young who had played only half back for the Dandenong Stingrays and Vic Country and only this year moved into the midfield.
