Geelong has appointed Blake Caracella as an assistant coach. Caracella, who has spent the past three seasons as an assistant at Collingwood, will join Mark Thompson’s coaching staff for at least the next two years.

Caracella has helped Collingwood reach the finals three times, including two preliminary finals, as a member of the Magpies coaching staff,

Hmm! A few questions.Wasn't the midfield one of the Maggies strengths under Scott? Didn't Caracella takeover as midfield coach at the Maggies after Scott left? Didn't Malthouse say after the Cats game a major reason we (Maggies) got done was that we (Maggies) got smashed in the midfield? Hmm!

The best coach in the world wouldn't have been able to get the Magpies midfield to beat ours.

Very quick to get a new coach so i am thinking it wasn't a surprise that Hinkley left and that maybe they had been looking for a new assistant coach before that.

Great to see us continue our trend of adding recently retired premiership players to our coaching staff.

Blake was an excellent, smart footballer in his day, is a very well-spoken and seemingly intelligent guy who has played under three of the all-time great coaches (Sheedy, Matthews and Malthouse) so he has a wonderful pedigree for success.

Blake Caracella's appointment is a damn good appointment by Neil Balme, Mark Thompson and the Geelong Football Club in general!!

Mark Thompson and Neil Balme have continued to compliment the current coaching staff with an experienced assistant who has worked under the best coaches in the business (Sheedy, Matthews and Malthouse).

At least the club did not appoint Buddha Hocking as an assistant coach!!

I just wonder why Buddha did not win a premiership as a player!!

Gov what do you mean by that comment about Buddha. Just because you are on SEN every second day doesnt mean you are Mr Football. Buddha was a legend of OUR great club.

The Governor is a tool who for some reason holds a massive grudge against anyone who played at the club between 1993 - 1999.

Just ignore him and he will go away.

Haha cop that Collingwood, we stole more of your staff.

Agree. Don't understand his comments about Buddha. Ask Malthouse and Woosha who they targeted in 94GF, and it was Buddha- corked badly in 1st 5 mins. and that was the end of our engine room. Who starred in the 89 Prelim? Buddha and Ablett. Who starred in 94 prelim ?Buddha. He must have a distorted memory. Buddha was ordinary in 95 GF but excellent in all games leading up to the GF. Buddha will go down as an absolute legend and blaming him for us not winning GF's is unjustified. As we vsaw this year, it takes a total team effort where EVERYONE did their bit, and sadly in some of our previous GF's, too much was expected of too few.

would have prefered a. simpson

don't think this bloke is a gun

we lose much more than we gain

Who knows?

Do you know anything about the respective coaching abilities of Simpson or Caracella? I sure as hell don't.

On what have you based this post?

Geez, that was lightning - don't log on for a couple of days and look what you miss out on.

Be interesting to see how he goes - certainly wasn't the first guy I thought of when Hinkley moved on to GC.

Interesting that Collingwood is losing yet another assistant coach, looks like the EGO doesn't like competition.

Perhaps, maybe, possibly, with the 2012 coach now about the place, a few aren't sure their positions are secure so they're taking pre-emptive action.;)

Hocking was definetly an amazing player; I think people forget about how good he was. Second best Geelong midfielder ever (at least in my era.) After Ablett of course.

As a coach he didnt seme great though. I remember his efforts to coach Peel Thunder and well.. yeah. Although granted Peel is a horrible team in general.

I'd suggest he would slot into Hinkley's old position as forward coach.

Pretty sure Lappin is the current midfield coach. If memory serves, Caracella was a pretty handy forward so he knows the caper.
