Re: If Mark Blake wants to leave....

I suspect they'll work out a deal where subject to form and opponent they'll both play a fair bit next year, with King taking the tougher ruck combos and Blake the easier ones. The fact is neither are really up to playing a full season - Blake's too young and King's not likely to get through it. This gives Blake another year to bulk up and work on his skills. King gets another year at senior level without having to be the main guy playing every week.

I can't see King getting a two year extension to his contract at this stage, he might get two years elsewhere but it'd be a huge risk for whoever took him on.

Re: If Mark Blake wants to leave....

if he is that mentally weak that he has to walk out after getting dropped then we dont want him.

Gee that is a bit harsh as thats all players want to do is to play in a winning GF. He may never get another crack at it, I can understand some frustration with the supporters but put yourself in his shoes. I am not saying what Bomber Thompson did was wrong but some players dont recover from that sort of thing.

How's he going to do that if he leaves Geelong?

Re: If Mark Blake wants to leave....

does anyone know much about west? how old is he and what sort of potential? where did he come from?
He turns 20 on October 17th (Rizzo's b'day too), recruited from Gippsland U18, height: 198cm, weight: 102kg.
Give him one or two years and he'll be great.
We got him in the draft with our 31st pick in 2005.
If Blake stays, I'll be looking forward to eventually having a West + Blake ruck combo.

Re: If Mark Blake wants to leave....

i understand that blake's upset to miss the gf, but he's just got to suck it up - it's all about the team, and he wasn't good enough to make it on the day, simple.

i'm actually really concerned about the future with blake. he improved this year, but never looked likely to dominate a game, and let's face it, he's very unco. sure he's a ruckman, but if his skills around the ground stay as poor as they are, he'll be a major liability in the future, when teams start closing in on us, and we no longer have the luxury of the best ruck combination in the league - ottens/king.

also, despite seeing trent west play a few good matches in early season vfl, i'm concerned that he's a bit short - 198cm is a fair way off the bigger ruckmen like sandilands, or even our own 2 frontliners at 202cm.

oh well, i guess we just have to trust the track record of our recruitment department up to now. i'd really to hate to see a scenario in 4-5 years when the combination of:
* our current success leads to really low draft picks for several years
* salary cap pressures from this superstar list leads to less than favourable trade concessions
* the inevitable waning of our current stars' powers over time; and finally
* the retirement of ottens/king

leaves us with an inferior ruck combination for several years, as well as a list full of aging stars and few truly exciting young prospects to turn over to. perhaps if blake really wants to go, now's the best time for us to look for a young ruckmen with size, and better skills, who could fill the void by then...

I've only seen a few games of him in vfl action on abc2, but I'll say that he looks a player, already pretty good in the ruck contests and able to kick goals, seen him kick one from over 50 metres out, capable of taking good grabs under pressure too. Me likey. He turns 20 this month so he's still young.

Re: If Mark Blake wants to leave....

I'm thinking that most of the attention on Blake is a beat-up due to him missing out on a premiership. I am sure he knows that King doesn't have much left in the tank and the premiership window is still very much open for us. There is no reason why he wouldn't be able to see success with us - he'd be taking a bigger gamble going to another team.

I think he'll stay.

blake wants to stay, just need the club to give him what he wants i guess!
would be wise to retain him as he was part of the winning formula during the year, hes quality which also means good trade bait, but not wise

Re: If Mark Blake wants to leave....

i heard from one of Blake's family members that he will only leave if Steven King is still at the club. He has always been given a bad time from Kingy not wanting to give the kid advice and help with his ruck work. So the main reason that he will leave is due to Kingy.

King looks like he is staying at this point so I hope what you are saying isnt quite true.

But again, if that's the case, he isn't the type of player we want at this club.

which actually goes against an article earlier in the year where Blake talked about how the 4 ruckmen in our side were pretty tight and Otto and King were helping to teach him and West the finer points of the art.

I hope Blakey can put it behind him and get on with it. We all face disappointments in life. You can have them eat you away and make you bitter, or you can use them to motivate yourself to succeed. The choice is Blakes in the end.

I concur. Every player knows that everyone on the list risks not being picked in the team for particular matches. I feel more for Egan not be able to participate. But I must say I really would like to see Mark Blake stay.

Re: If Mark Blake wants to leave....

Probably not quite ready yet, but we are always going to have to blood him at some stage. With Ottens at the top of his game, I guess early next year would be the time.

That said, King will play if Blake goes, so unless there is injury, West will be able to continue to develop in the twos.

Mark Blake going?

Is there any truth to the fact that Blake has been left bitter and looking to enter the PSD and be traded off? I've heard a bit about it and thought id come ask
