Re: Blake puts pen to paper - Will be a Cat in '08

I hope it's true but I can't see how the cats can hold onto all 3 ruckmen. I just don't know how it will work.
One of them will have to play reserves (or be injured). King should have a few years left in him and Otto isn't going anywhere, so either Blake or King will have to get used to the reserves for a while.:(

Re: Blake puts pen to paper - Will be a Cat in '08

Good news. There probably needs to be a little bit of mending of the fences. Some think Blake hard done by , others think him a Mummys boy for whining , he and Rod probably were not happy with the way he was managed , the club were probably not happy with the way handled it! The smartest thing the club could do is now push the line that he has signed for considerably less than he was offered elsewhere , let him safe a little face , make him the big man for thinking of the club even after his savage disappointment.

I wonder they did sign him on in the end.
I would have thought 3 years at $650,000 would have been reasonable.
08/$150,000
09/$200,000
10/$300,000.
By the time 2010 rolls around he should be our best ruckman and be in our best 10 players.

Re: Blake puts pen to paper - Will be a Cat in '08

If true he will be a Saint next year..

do we want a pick or player?

What happened to King being offered a 1-year deal and him wanting to stay?

Re: Blake puts pen to paper - Will be a Cat in '08

I'm happy that Blakey is staying. Not too happy with all the bitching and moaning since he was dropped from the team. Hopefully it's just a sign of his immaturity and he won't look to blame others for the remainder of his career. I'd say he's lost a little respect from the playing group because of the way he's carried on lately.

Re: Blake puts pen to paper - Will be a Cat in '08

I can never see Blake being our best ruckman. West will roll over him in a few years, unless he learns to get posessions and mark the ball.

There is far more to ruck work than the tap outs. If he learns that and I have my doubts, then possibly but I dont see it. Blake = Street average ruckman and always will be. He has improved but I dont see that continuing.

Still waiting on Blake I'd say. If he opted to leave then Kingy would probably be offered a little more $$$ and another year (2). If Blakey signs then King will sign a reduced 1 year deal.

kingy wants to play 200 games with the cats
heart and sould is with the club
can see the club is on the up, and his body may hold up
no coincidence that him and ottens had better years and cats have new med staff

I am not believing an unsubstantiated rumor at this stage...I will wait for an official announcement
Ah.... but of course my good friend. It has happened, but yes wait out for the announcemnet, should be tomorrow.

Steven King will be traded if possible or look to the PSD, just not enough trust in his body.

Yeah there's been a heap of ruckman that've played well into their 30's depite injury. Rehn and Salmon are two that played well into their 30's after overcomming injuries that were more severe than what Kingy's had. Let's not forget the fact that Kingy is 28. If he stays upright he could play for a long time yet. Also his business interests (with fellow Geelong players) would make it harder for him to move.

Me too.

You'd think the GFC would announce it if were the case, not really any need to be cloak-and-daggers about it.

Blake to remain a Cat

Now we wait on King

Blake stays a Cat
10 October 2007

MARK Blake has put aside his Grand Final heartache and agreed to remain at Geelong.

The promising ruckman yesterday turned his back on more lucrative offers from St Kilda and Richmond in favour of a new contract with the Cats.

It is believed the Saints were prepared to offer as much as $800,000 over three years for Blake.

While the Geelong offer will be significantly less financially, it has improved enough to win him over.

Blake, 22, was devastated to be dropped for the Grand Final in favour of veteran Steven King after he had played 22 games during the season.

Blake's father Rod, a former Cats ruckman and 1980 best-and-fairest winner, has been outspoken about his disappointment in how Geelong handled his son's omission.

Blake's decision to stay puts King's future under the microscope.

With the premiers under increasing salary-cap pressure, there is a chance the former captain could be squeezed out of Skilled Stadium. Coach Mark Thompson has indicated he wants to keep the 28-year-old for one more season. But with the Cats having to find extra cash to satisfy Blake, there may not be enough room to fit everyone in. King, who played just six games this year, including the Grand Final, has already said he would prefer to stay at Geelong.

However if a club brings a two-year deal to the table -- and there has been plenty of interest in him during the opening two days of trade week -- King will be forced to have a re-think.

With Blake out of the equation, Brisbane Lions youngster Cameron Wood takes over as the most sought-after ruckman on the trade table.

Collingwood is leading the race, with a suggestion it may even consider using its first-round draft pick to lure him south. Another young ruck prospect, Fremantle's Robert Warnock, has also come to the attention of the Saints and Tigers.

Melbourne is confident it will come to an agreement over an exchange for Adelaide ruckman John Meesen.

COLLINGWOOD defender Shane Wakelin will play on next season after signing a one-year deal with the Magpies. Wakelin considered following his twin brother, Port Adelaide defender Darryl, into retirement at the end of the season, but opted to sign on for his eighth season with the Magpies.

Re: Blake to remain a Cat

If Mark Blakes situation costs Steven King his chance to see out his career at Geelong, I will be absolutely LIVID!

How we could even contemplate trading a 200 game club servant, former captain, former All Australian, Ruck Coach and mentor to both Blake and West, is way beyond me. The guy has even come out without hesitation and said that he wants to stay and is willing to do so on less cash and on worse terms - a commitment not matched by Mark Blake.

Please, if there is any grace in football, we will not even contemplate trading him - besides, and this is a big besides, he is still our second best ruckman in a year in which we are a big shot for Back to Back!

King, even with only maybe a year left, has more value to the Geelong Football Club then people give credit for - to possibly severe these ties would be the most stupid thing i could imagine.

Re: Blake to remain a Cat

Would King feel that having been granted a Grand Final berth and subsequent premiership, he will feel enough for the club to remain here on a lesser salary for maybe a year? He has a peerless opportunity for another flag at Geelong, and he has just about done it all in his career. I'd say he would already be quite a wealthy man at this point of his career, so do a couple of hundred thousand dollars and another year mean more than being at a Premiership club?

I admire King greatly for his willingness to just get out there and play in the Magoos, never whingeing or causing friction, just performing week after week. I would suggest his fitness right now is as good as at any point in the last 5 years, which means on form and on impact as per the Grand Final, he would justifiably be our 2nd best ruckman behind Ottens. Personally if all three stay at the club, it shows strength of character that must be good going forward into the next season.

Re: Blake to remain a Cat

King is staying]
has not been signed up so the sook thought he was the key target
cats dont want to strengthen an opposing team for next year, eg saints
he will be staying, bomber loves him, and is a loyal bloke

and we need 3 ruckmen, as they go down more frequently

watch this space will be signed up asap

there is room in the salary cap, year after is problem

Relax guys, neither Blake nor King in my opinion are going anywhere.

The coaching staff aren't stupid - they know Blake has his best football years ahead of him, and they also know King with his strength and experience is still ahead of him. Both are essential for us to have a serious crack next year.

They know what they're doing.

Blake got himself a more lucrative offer from Geelong....good for him, Bartel did exactly the same thing when he was out of contract, you can't blame them....I can't understand this vitriol against him, sure his old man probably should have kept his mouth shut but he ain't mark!

exactly. he must stay. a fully fit steven king (hopefully he has a full pre season) is close to the best ruckman in the league. i really like blakey but king in full flight is a street ahead of him

Re: Blake to remain a Cat

The question is, can King stay injury free? I doubt he can. I see that St Kilda are considering their second round pick (pick 26 I think). That isn't the most tempting offer. But probably fair.

I read somewhere this morning that Richmond are still keen on King. It would be interesting to see what they would offer for King. Maybe pick 18-19? They don't have much else to offer that Geelong would be interested in.

If we get offered that, I say go for it. It will offer salary cap relief and a quality youngster. It's a good swap for a injury plagued 29 year old ruckman with declining form.

Knowing Richmond though, they probably try to make him nominate for the pre seaon draft.

Re: Blake to remain a Cat

i hope king goes
he's going to cost us a lot of money for not much in return (in my opinion).
i dont think he can stay injury free
he didnt manage that many games this yr and the ones he did were in the VFL where its a much slower pace and a lot easier on the body

i think its a better investment putting more money into blake who will be with us for much longer.

Did you see the GF? I know we dominated as a team, but Kingy was back so some of his best form, you never know, he could stay injury free, and if injury free in best form, atm is a better option than blake.
