Blaming Umpires For A Loss

If he blocked Goldstein out of competing in the ruck then how did Goldstein win the ruck tap? Hickey just stood his ground at the ruck contest, he couldn't jump as he was carrying a leg injury.

Even if you can argue the free kick was technically there it was still a pathetically soft free kick to pay when scores were level in a tight contest, that free kick basically won North the game as Goldstein was able to kick a point.

Not to mention some of the other goals North got from pathetically soft free kicks like Montagna lightly touching Harvey's back with his hand, the sort of thing that happens hundreds of times in a game yet goes unpunished.

Yeah well it's no surprise that the supporters of teams that get shafted by the umpires are the ones doing most of the whining and complaining, you aren't going to get many Western Bulldogs or Hawthorn supporters complaining when they are the ones that regularly benefit from the shit umpiring.
So that one call won Nth the game?. The other 119 minutes were St Kilda could have won the game? Look mate as I have said before umpires make mistakes (the hickey one was there and yes soft as you suggest). I suggest that will not be called a mistake by the umpiring department. St Kilda had a chance to win that a few skill errors and pressure from Nth denied them. Your team is coming along nicely chin up

So what was Hickey supposed to do? Make himself invisible? It was a ruck contest FFS and ruckmen are supposed to make contact with each other.

It was a garbage free kick like a lot of other free kicks that are paid these days.

If you look at the opposing ruckman and make any frontal contact it will be a free kick. It is the most obvious ruck free kick that can be paid.

You don't need to look far for winging bulldog supporters.

As for the north vs saints game, it is clear north got the rub. I thought it was more apparent early in the game - there were frees to north that didn't look to be there.

Both of the late ones you mention were soft and if not paid, nobody would have complained. Hard to say that north was gifted, but they were better rewarded than the saints on Sunday.

Funny that there is so much stink about wood running down the clock in the media. That is a non issue. New thread about it now on BF though.

The issue that I see is that "lesser" teams like st kilda, north, Melbourne etc. Rarely get the 50/50s go their way. If one seems to be on the up then you can lay down money for who will get the frees. But if we play the bigger more popular teams, then its boiled lollies again from the umps.

Maybe its the crowd noise or maybe they just get carried away and go with the favourites. Who knows?

Either way, I'm not here to gloat at your expense today.

WTF did you even watch the game? Hickey held him back from competing in the ruck and Hickey won the tap as a result.
(down to two North players Dal Santo and Atley) ;)
Blind freddy can see it, time to move on mate.

The real topic here regarding shit umpiring is from the Dogs/Crows match.
Now Adelaide have something to complain about, the North/St Kilda match was umpired fine IMO.

Eyes on Goldstein and front on contact? Why is this free being questioned so much?

Hickey's eyes look to be on the ball in that photo and the contact looks to be more side on that front on, and since when was contact illegal in a ruck contest anyway? It's called a ruck contest for a reason, contact between the ruckmen is kind of inevitable.

they do but would be interesting to see the frame where the contact was made.

Free kick any day of the week, hickey only looked at the ball after he'd impeded Goldstein.

Just a boneheaded and stupid move by a ruck who panicked and cost his side the game

I've never understood why those ruck frees are paid. One ruckman decides to stay on the ground, the other jumps into him and wins the free. If they both stay down no free is given. The ruckmen who can't or don't jump are disadvantaged. I get it in the middle but not around the ground.

The hickey one was fairly obvious though. He ran under the ball only looking at Goldstein and stopped him from being able to contest. Had hickey watched the ball while engaging Goldstein he'd have been fine

The ruck frees are a real lottery, I don't think even the umpires know exactly what the rules are and are just guessing most of the time.

Whenever they pay a ruck free the players have no idea which way the free kick is going until the umpire tells them as it's usually not obvious.

Most problems would be solved by not paying the soft ones. Don't pay in the back if the tackle is legal but from behind. Don't pay deliberate if the player kicks into space. Don't pay HTB if the player on top is holding it in. Don't pay line ball ruck infringements. Don't pay high contact if the player shrugs his shoulders.

Who then determines which ones are the soft ones - why not just pay them if they are there. I bet if they paid every throw, every duck, every htb, every deliberate, every short kick, every creep of the mark then players would either stop doing it or at least it would reduce the incidences.

I think most people would prefer fewer frees. Did you read my post?

Port Adelaide got a raw deal today?
I see what you did there.

If we got an even deal and won by 5 points, or 5 goals, it would still be a shit game. we were shit. End of story.

Were the umpires at fault today Plugger35?

Dude get a grip.

Plugger in previous weeks was pointing out clear bad decisions and obviously it's not the umpires fault we lost today but it's equally obvious that the game was umpired poorly as per usual in WA.

Did you see the deliberate against Bruce?

If you can't judge the umpires performance on the damn umpires board where can you? They're not doing a good job
