After the Didak vs Daicos debacle we had during the week, I have a new comparision to make for you ladies and gentlemen to decide over.

Who, out of Tony Shaw, and Nathan Buckley was the more inspirational captain?

One was a Premiership captain, whilst another was a Brownlow medalist. Who would you describe as more inspirational as captain?

Is an interesting comparison, Shaw is a premiership captain, which is quite rare around Collingwood, yet Buckley was a champion who inspired his team with his ability more then his leadership skills.

So, my result would be;

Most Inspirational Captain; Tony Shaw

Bucks was a great captain, but Tony Shaw was born to captain Collingwood, he was a "star" player himself in his day, getting the absolute most out of his ability yet his leadership skills and famous "mouth" are now legendary.

I do believe the premiership and the way Shaw performed especially in 1990 as a season sets him as the most inspirational skipper I've seen.

Good answer Matty, but I don't want people comparing them as players whatsoever. The answer has to be purely as captains.

Buckley hands down. Shaw was great but just not in the same class as Buckley.

It's a bit unfair not to compare them as players. I don't think you can give a real assessment without doing so. Shaw was a great captain, helped alot by the legend of a premiership win. I think the fact Buckley was only the second player to win a Norm Smith in a losing side (since Gary Ablett) goes to show it wasn't his leadership abilities that let us down in those GF's. We just didn't have the depth then. Buckley was an imposing Collingwood captain and i'd have him ahead of Shaw irrespective of the ultimate glory.

Buckley - Shaw was a good skipper but there were plenty of others in his team that a player could draw inspiration from. Bucks stood above all others with the possible exception of Burns.

Id actually have to say Shaw for one reason Ability, Bucks was great and a superior player to Shaw so it was a bit easier for him to have a massive influence on games and set an example.

Tony Shaw was supposedly slow, couldnt kick, and a bit dour but having seen his performance in many games where he just willed himself to get the side over the line was exceptional.
He was prepared to get his hands dirty and say this is how its done boys!
Dont get me wrong he was a fantastic player but as far as inspiration goes if i had to pick between the two with scores level at 3/4 time and some real leadership needed i would have to say id take Shaw.

Buckley hands down, no question.

If the scores were level at 3/4 time, I'd rather have Bucks. The man could turn the game by himself.

Matchwinner. Leader. Champion. :)

I am shattered that we no longer have Buckly in our team. We would win a flag with him and our list, even possibly this year.

I used to get upset at this but now i am just thankful that i got to see buckley from the beggining of his career at collingwood to the very end of it. He was my hero. I remember when i finally got the pies jumper and i ran down to the local K-mart to get my number 5 so it could get ironed on. Loved the man and he was an inspiration to collingwood. Once in a lifetime player. We need another at collingwood ASAP!

Polar opposites these blokes who ended up in (nearly) the same place..

Bucks was the born champion who had to learn to be a great leader and did.
Shaw was the born leader who had to work his arse off to be a bloody good player and became one.

Their leadership skills were probably similar by the end of the career but Buckley's ability to win a game off his own boot to inspire those around him tips it for me.

Well its hard to compare them without taking playing ability into account.

But for me, Bucks any day of the week. Everything about him was inspirational, his training, on field, media, and the ability to win games off his own boot.

Why did you have to get old Bucks why....

a question that is best answered by the players... but imo it is probably buckley - lets remember shaw has a premiership to his name and this wrongly or rightly rises his stocks dramatically....
MM says buckely is the best coach he has seen.. that comment is a massive wrap for a guy who his leadership skill questioned at times...

Leigh Mathews rates Shaw as high as anyone as a captain. That’s hard to ignore. Pretty tough to split IMO. Buckley was an ordinary captain early on but he grew into a very good leader. Shaw was B&F in a premiership year and Norm Smith in a flag. Not a bad CV for a skipper apart from he impact on other players around him.

Good Post!
I lean towards Shaw. Watched both their careers.
I'll leave out the if's, why's, could have's and because's
