Now that school has finished, how has it been just focusing on football?
I'm just really excited about getting into full-time training and hopefully playing some games for Casey and seeing what I can do next year.
Has it been another adjustment period, now that you've finished year 12?
It's been good. I've got to manage my body now, which gets sore after training and weights. So it's a matter of doing the right recovery. It's been a really good transition. I'm not missing school at the moment, which is good.
Are you on target to play at the start of the season?
It's more how my body will go. If everything goes to plan, there is no reason why I can't play round one for Casey.
What about playing for Melbourne in the NAB Cup/pre-season period?
We haven't spoken about that at this stage. I haven't played footy for 13 or 14 months. It's pretty straight forward really - you can't expect to go straight from under-18s to AFL footy and miss a year of footy. Of course I want to be able to do that, but it's how I'm tracking at the time.
It's been a little more than 12 months since you arrived at the club. How do you feel a year on?
All of the boys have been really supportive of me and understand the injuries I've had. I get along well with everyone and it's good to have Tom Scully at the club. I've had a fair bit to do with him and Jordan Gysberts, who I went to school with and played a lot of local footy with. The list is already young as it is, so everyone communicates pretty well, which is good.
You were drafted as a 17-year-old last year - something that couldn't be done in this year's draft - so in theory you could have been drafted this year with Scully and Gysberts. Have you thought about that scenario at all?
Me and 'Sculls' actually joked together at the AIS that we could actually play together and end up at the same club - and it has happened. We've known each other for the last four or five years and become pretty good mates. I've played probably 60 or 70 games with Jordan at the Norwood Football Club, Eastern Ranges, interleague and state league footy. We know each other's game like the back of our hand. That's going to help when we play together.
Are you going to be doing any work or study in 2010 or just focusing on football?
I'm just going to have a year off. I'll probably look at getting into real estate or property development along the way, possibly next year.
Who are your mentors at the club?
Brent Moloney has been pretty good to me. He's had a few injuries himself, so he's helped keep me motivated, which has been good. I've worked closely with Jack Watts and Colin Garland, who I've spent most of my time doing rehabilitation with, so we've been able to get the best out of each other. They're probably a few guys I've had a fair bit to do with in the last couple of months.
When you were drafted, your pace and kicking were rated among your best attributes. Would you agree with that?
I think my kicking and pace are my main attributes. I did my first lot of sprints the other day and I wasn't any slower than before I broke my leg, so that's positive. I've just started my kicking again and that feels pretty good at the moment, so hopefully I can keep improving on my endurance, so I should be right to go.
Now that is a positive.
