I can't agree with giving clubs more power to move players. You have a right to choose where you work.

To expand on this.

If you worked for a company and got told that they were opening a new office at the Casey Research Station in Antartica and that you were required to move there, you get to say, no thank you and resign.

Or if you wanted to go back home then they can't force you to stay (although they can protect some IP rights with freeze outs etc.)

Football is a business, the clubs are employers and the employee's are the players whether we like it or not. There is no loyalty just look at the Hawks.

Employees wages are constrained and draft tells them where they must play. Both those could be blown up by lawyers in the future given the AFL uses its monopoly powers to control this.

Many players leave because they don't like their line manager (Coach) or their methods.

So what?

People don't quit because they don't like their jobs?

We have rights in this country. Just because it is inconvenient for the employer means jackshit.

Kerseten, McCarthy, Hamling, Adams, Hill.

2 key forwards, 2 key defenders and a running mid.

Very good off season for Freo if they do this...instantly replenish their KPP stocks which were paper thin.
Thanks for getting back on track - thought i was in the fair works australia thread

But at the same time, I wouldn't take a job as a national sales manager if I didn't want to travel...

My thinking is that some jobs require you to relocate, there's nothing wrong with AFL Player being one of those jobs. If a player isn't happy with that, there are other career paths where you can sit in the same office all day, 15 minutes from home.

As long as a player works hard for their club, and keeps an open dialogue in the lead-up to a potential move, I think most clubs would be happy to trade the player to their desired destination (if a fair deal is offered). But if a player does a Hendo, or a McCarthy, their club should have the ability to trade them to whoever is willing to pay the highest price.

Case in point, Mitchell. Done right by Hawthorn for a long time, was up front and honest with his club about where he wanted to be in a few years time, and they've given him away for peanuts to help him on his way (and free up some cap space).

If a player wants to be treated fairly, they should show their club the same respect.

Things change too though. I can take up a job as a national sales manager, and it works for the first three years, then I realise I am sick and tired of living out of hotel rooms and that I want to settle down.

As long as players and clubs deal respectfully with eachother, which they tend to, I think the system works fine.

People complaining about clubs not having enough power come from a place of parochial desire. They want our club to succeed, I get that. But I don't want to punish players who need a change of scenario because it is inconvenient to the club.

and in the real world where there's no salary cap and many more opportunities for most people, you can politely say no thank you, ill find a job elsewhere.

If you choose a career as a professional musician, expect to have to travel for work and tour.

If you choose to be a professional hockey player, you'll need to move to the states or europe to make money.

If you wanna work in a mine, odds are you have to travel for work.

These guys have chosen to play in the Australian football league. If they don't want to travel, then can go sign up for the VFL and get paid 1/10th of the salary they currently earn.

What a load of ****ing crap.

You're not talking about "travel" it's forced relocation.

Poor clubs, having to run a business where the contract staff are treated with a little respect, how will they ever cope?

Cameron: Pick 5 has been discussed (in the Marchbank and Pickett deal with the Blues), but we'll see where it ends up #NABTradeRadio

"see where it ends up"

that is very interesting but maybe reading the context wrong though

Horses for courses.

If a want to be a cop, I'll be allowed to put in some preferences for stations but there's no guarantee I get one of them.
If I want to join the armed services, same deal, could be posted anywhere.

There are careers where you have to sign up knowing that you could be required to relocate. I've got friends who've done it, and I've got friends who tried it, struggled, and moved into different jobs instead.

I don't see why being an AFL Player must include the right to choose which club you play for.

Also metioned we were tied up with the crows so unable to focus on getting Marchbank

Same thing said about Brisbane and their collection of fringe players the last 2 years... We'll see.

Running around in semi undies, kicking a pumped up pigs arse through 2 lumps of wood for a jagillion dollars, while everyone pats you on the dick, but you couldn't to seven without both hands open.

I feel for them......

You don't have to watch either.

It doesn't and nobody is suggesting it. You're making a false statement here to back up a shit point. Army? Police force? in what sense is football even remotely similar.

Players don't get to get where they want (until FA kicks in) and clubs don't get to send players wherever they want (except when drafted), they negotiate an outcome, usually like adults.

It's the rules of the market and they work pretty well.

Wait why would we give up pick 5? all 3 players discussed are out of contract and 2/3 have nominated us... all 3 haven't exactly lived up to the hype yet either, id sooner throw 5 to the suns for prestia since talks have stalled between richmond/suns.
