How will Freo match next year after bringing in Hill, McCarthy, Hamling, Kersten, etc.

I would say it's not just a a question of "paying now via trade" vs "getting him for free next year via FA". A LOT can happen between now and next year that can cause for him to have a change of heart and stay. If he's get-able now, doesn't mean that'll be the case next year.
