If we have to fight for Kelly then we can go without. Only want players who are there because they bleed Blue and want to be there. its a privilege to play for Carlton and if we have to lose an arm or leg for him then I'd rather use the draft pick and recruit a good kid who will be another of our foundation kids.

Agreed! Kids like Docherty and Marchbank who were our big targets in trade week all wanted to come across to us and have played their asses off in each game they've represented us. They are the types you want to build your next 22 around, they'll be the ones who push the team over the line in big wins!

Fully agree, dont want anyone that is in for a massive pay day rather than a fair pay day and want to wear the jumper.

They surely can't land Hopper and Ablett in the same season, without a first round pick. They just can't; it would fly in the face of their trading for the last ten years, where they have gone in to get their man, and done the deal in a way to serve both sides.

If you shaft another club, it'll come back to bite you later, and I can't see how they get it done without shafting GWS and/or GC, or really selling the farm (trading Harry Taylor/Hawkins) which defeats the purpose.
Ablett alone will cost heaps, and you can bet that as he is still contracted next year at G.C. Geelong would have to take over that contract and that will not be cheap.........they may get Ablett and Smith, but they are unlikely to get Hopper as well.........they would have to sell too much (as you said) to get it done and with what.......???

I think they could get it done, our P21 and 2018 1st for Hopper & Smith. A 2nd rounder plus Motlop compensation for Ablett. Stephen Wells would find a way.

You really honestly think that anyone would trade a second rounder + Motlop compo - which, depending on the contract, should be worth maybe a second round pick, possibly an early one - for Gary Ablett?

Not a chance in hell. Even if it wasn't Ablett, think of the message it would send to all the potential draftees; we'll pay you piles of money for you to phone it in for a few years then you get to go home.

Carlton want him so trust them to do a fair deal. Kids are fine, but the club obviously want someone who can step up straight away and improve the team and you cannot just get them with good will. If Kelly was just after money he would be going to N.M. for sure, but he would have other reasons for going to a club as well, like the direction the club is headed in and wanting to be part of that..........so let`s hope we are that club and he gets the chance to show he can bleed navy blue. You have to be at the club before you can show that..........do you not???

They're going to work the system, nothing surer.

GC offer a nice deal to Motlop that gets Geelong a second rounder via FA and send that to GC and maybe a fringe 22 player as well.

So for Ablett they get Motlop, fringe 22 player (Horton Smith type) and a second rounder. That's not too bad out of a shit situation for them, wish they'd hold him to the contract and he sooks it up and retires but this is a business and you get nowhere being vindictive

Gary is 33, they won't get a top 10 pick for him! Two 2nd round picks and maybe something extra should be enough. Otherwise he retires and you get nothing. They folded with O'Meara eventually and will most likely so it again.

Personally I don't care about the message it sends as it's not my club! I was merely stating that it is possible for Geelong to obtain all three targets but I hope they don't.

Let me pose a question; in this scenario, but with Geelong having every pick between 10 and 35, what's Ablett worth? What deal do they get done?

It's an impossible trade; if Caleb Marchbank required a first round pick, based purely on what he had shown to date and his potential, surely Ablett, a Brownlow medalist, a former club captain and BNF winner, and a number of other accolades to go with all that, is too.

Put very simply, why would GC do that trade? Two second rounders for their best player? Would we accept that for Murphy?

GC want mature players, they had a shitload of early picks last year and will have quite a few this year.

From a draft/kid perspective they won't be far off being nearly brand new again.

Motlop is a best 22 player, bottom 10 type. You take what you can get out of a crap situation and he's well available

One thing they won't do is just let Gary retire and get nothing

You might not care what message it sends, but it's relevant to a queensland club. We got Doc on the cheap due to go home factor - amidst other things - and the Lions have made a fairly public stand over the last few years, only drafting those who would stay and holding players to contracts.

If GC don't do the same, that club is ****ed; it may be doomed already, but at some point you've got to make a stand to your playing group.

And yes, Gaz is 33, which is part of why this is an impossible trade. He goes to Geelong, and they'll get around two years at best of his output. He will make them look like chumps, if they let him go for less than a first round pick.

simple he will be 34 next year that's why

Like S.Mitchell it will probably take a 3rd rounder, if not late 2nd

I'm really hoping SOS keeps being frugal with trades. I don't think our list is in a position to sacrifice a pick 3 and future 1st round for a super trade like Kelly

Too pricey for us right now

Motlop is rubbish; he had a purple patch a few years ago, but folded like a cheap suit the second pressure came down on him. He's barely in the cats best 22, and that's with their one two punch set put that doesn't need anyone else.

It's like I'm seeing the same arguments that I saw for trading Gibbs for Cameron, just this time we're talking about other side's players. We held firm, and we risked getting a worse deal this year; perhaps GC will do the same, confident in the message it sends to their playing group.

This might sound a but shit but I wouldn't shed a tear if that's how his career ended.

Gary doesn't seem to give a shit about a club that's paying him to do so.
Sooner we don't have to listen to about all things Ablett, the better. Would like to see him retire or be forced into retirement.

Can't wait to a see who SOS has his eyes on re: the experienced bodies for the midfield. Trigg said this is something we're targeting for the upcoming draft as we for found out for depth in the middle.

I don't want to oversell it, but having a couple of experienced bodies in there for rotations will be a massive improvement over this season. I cringed at times seeing Matty Wright at the centre bounce - just 0 effectiveness there.

SOS probably already has a long list of potential delistee's and state
leaguers, but I guess they're going to have to be better than Graham for us to even bite.

Haven't seen any names mentioned so far fitting this criteria.
