Can't say I've paid much attention to Gaff's game but my eagles supporting mate is no fan of his game and has been happy to have him traded for the last two years on the basis that he is very much a replaceable and non-damaging player.

If he: brings the polish we need; is the best available; doesn't cost overs and fits, then why not.

We do need an outside runner. Maybe that would've been Doc but who knows.

We will be major players in the trade and free agency market over the next 2 to 3 trade and free agency periods.

Who or what exactly are we going to trade this year ??

With this next draft pool mooted to be a blockbuster, it would be madness to trade out draft picks especially as we should have at least two in the Top 20.

As for players to trade, outside of all the young up & comers who we would not want to lose, I can't see anyone else who has any serious currency.

We have enough room for Gaff this year and Shiel next year.

Miss one of them and we could also look to trade in a gun player next year.

Basically we'll look to acquire 2 x elite players as free agents or trades before 2020 kicks off. Plus hit the draft again this year.
Like your optimism, doubt we will get two bona fide gun players in two years, it wont stop us from trying. Norf have already proven they will throw buckets of money at anyone not already signed up in a desperate bid to have someone remember they exist. Port are not far behind in the top up stakes.

It wont be as easy as making room in the SC, there are plenty more variables, one being we are not yet a destination club.

SOS won't overpay for anyone. Hence why we missed out on guys like Carlisle, Prestia and Rockliff.
We haven't yet but we have also been miles from a premiership. Who knows what we will do in the future. With all of Weitering, Curnow and Cripps being the type of players who could bring those $1mil type offers in the future it is probably important that we don't go overpaying players though otherwise it could come back to bite us.
On Gaff, I don't think $800k is overpaying at all with him being a FA. If it is, it would be only slightly

So how for west are we talking? Can't see us paying overs or paying a great deal for a player we don't really need. No harm in exploring options. Things will change between now and trade period so lets see.

One other issue with Gaff given he is such an outside player is that he simply does not kick enough goals (6 goals last year, 7 the year before, career high of 11).

In a perfect world we would be able to bring in a goalkicking outside mid (given our scoring woes), but that said adding Gaff's 29 touches a game without giving up a player/pick would certainly improve us regardless.
Fair call

I assumed he was a more prolific goal kicker

A small rebuttal: in 2017, Gaff was ranked at the Eagles 3rd for Score Involvements, 4th for Score Assists, 3rd for Inside 50s, and #1 for Effective Disposals

I wouldn't mind some of that action in navy :)

A few points:

- Post you quoted clearly stated "over the next 2 to 3 trade and free agency periods", not just the next one.

- Agree with you 100% that trading out of this draft would be silly, but trading around within it, if we've identified certain players we like, could be very astute (see: Macreadie, Williamson, Polson, Kerr).

- I'm fully expecting us to lose a few of the young up and comers we don't want to lose. Might be Macreadie or Polson chasing opportunity, might be Cuningham falling down the pecking order, might be McKay getting a silly salary offer from a desperate club. Odds are at least a couple will go over the next few years.

North have literally nothing going for them other than money.

No player is going to want to go and play for them because they are going to be stuck down the bottom of the ladder for some time.

Why on Earth they think they are ready for free agency is totally beyond me.

Starting to sound like North fans here with all the talk about with landing a big fish.

The reality is that each season there would be an average of 1 decent Free Agent with 17 other clubs fighting for him. Most restricted FAs get matched and teams end up trading which removes the real benefit.

The chances of a team outside the 8 snagging him are pretty low.

Great if we can land a Sloan, but unlikely to happen.

Who or what exactly are we going to trade this year ??.

This year I expect we will be major players for a free agent and will take our first and second round picks to the draft.

Next year we will also make a major bid for a free agent, but will be much more likely to have our first and future first round draft picks on the table for an elite player.

Our list management is transitioning into phase 2 of the rebuild.

We were able to pay out Palmer and Smedts last year and still remain well under the cap.

Still to be confirmed that Smedts had a contract for 2018 that was paid out...

I reckon not, with Palmer the only one under an agreement worked out. Don’t think we’d be casting off coin that easy.

AUG-2015: BILLIE Smedts has pledged to work harder than ever on becoming a regular AFL player after being handed a new two-year contract by Geelong, which ties him to the club until the end of the 2017 season

After Gibbs left we had to spend it on something to come up to 95 percent. A back up Ruckman was as good as anything.

Even factoring in that we've probably paid slight overs to lure Kennedy, Marchbank and Plowman to the club, we have a squillions to spend.

With the state our back line is in, and Jones sudden form, the writing is on the wall for Rowe this year. Simpson, ASOS and Thomas' contracts all expire this year as well.

I dare say most of those four will be retire by the end of the year, and if not this year then next year for certain. Only Simpson would be on in excess of 500K per annum, but those four players alone free up over a million (and probably closer to 1.5 million) in the salary cap combined.

The Long and Short of it is is that we have enough room to safely accommodate contract extensions for all of our young players and Patrick Cripps, and still have enough left over the acquisition of a gun free agent or two or a big name trade over the next few years.

It's all part of a deliberate long-term list management strategy by the club. Focus on the draft first and banking sizeable amounts of the salary cap for several years. Then as those young draftees start to rise up the ladder and the club becomes a destination club, use that money along with the promise of a young and upcoming list to lure promising free agents to plug any remaining holes in the list and add that extra layer of class.

Mark my words this year we will embrace the draft again and also be on the hunt for a big-name free agent.

Next year we will go all in with trading for a big name, and look to also obtain another gun free agent.

Yes we will go to the draft again that is a 110% guarantee but I doubt we will be going for a big name player.

Of course it depends on the year we have but I don't think we will getting a star to crossover.

This year its the draft plus our hat in the ring for a F/A.

Next year it'll be hat in the ring for a F/A plus go hard at an established elite player with picks on the table.

If all goes to plan, we'll have the current list (with an extra 2 years growth under its belt) plus 3-4 star players ready to go for 2020.

This year I like the look of Gaff as that F/A. Next year Shiel is my number one F/A grab. Lachie Neale from Freo is my dream trade for next year (would cost 2 x 1sts with change coming back our way). I like the look of Isak Rankine for our 1st this year.

All four of those players fill that need for a [high disposal/ offensive/highly skilled] [midfielder/ wing] to assemble around Cripps, Dow, Kennedy and to complement SPS who plays a similar role.

We will 100% take a free agent that is happy to come to Carlton. Gaff would be great and should rightly be a prime target of those available this year (Sloane will cost too much and imo unlikely to leave anyway)

I would rather go for Shiel than Gaff to be honest as for a FA we can do what we did last year with Kennedy etc not big name stars but guys who can help us get 17.

If we add Gaff, Shiel and a top 10 pick to the side for 2020, with 2 years development we will be looking as good as anyone for the flag.

A lot rests on Harry being a gun though.
Not sure I agree.

Charlie's well on his way. Depending on how we go recruiting for the midfield, may only need the one genuine tall + Jack and/or Ben Silvagni. TDK and Kerr as well in the 2's. We'll see how they go this year.

You're better off having good talls and smalls instead of a single dominant goalkicker, anyway.

I just reckon if we add those two decent mids, that by 2020, we will be covered all over the ground, if harry becomes a gun.

Curnow I've got no doubt will, but we need another and chances are Kerr won't (just % of players that make it from his pick) and BOSOS or any other tall we draft likely won't be ready to be influential in a flag.

If we get Gaff and Shiel, I honestly think we could be flag contenders in 2020.

If Bolton & Silvani want and established quality player this year or next they will make the move.
We desperately need to be able to kick a wining score first and foremost,
so the priority must be an intelligent KPF with good footy IQ , skill mobile and good endurance.
Whether it be draft or as RFA or FA we need one asap.

See, I'd prefer us using the Gaff bidding war to make it harder for the St Kildas of the world to make a play for Shiel, because make no mistake they will come for him hard. He's everything they need to make that team a contender.

What I would find ideal would be to bid up Gaff, then make a play for Shiel then Petracca. Shiel is a free agent, and Petracca in 2020. I'd also have been making inquiries as to how comfortable Whitfield is in Sydney, and whether or not Fasolo's on the edge of getting delisted.

We don't need the keys so much right now. What we need, more than anything else, is depth forward of the ball and through the midfield. We can give the talls we've got some time now to demonstrate if they've got it or not.

Not so sure we definitely need another KPF, to improve our scoring prowess.(Even though I would take a tall over a mid, if ranked similar) Purely needs basis, I would target goal kicking mids
