Yeah until he gets another strike, is suspended from more games, and his form drops as he becomes addicted and his health suffers.

Where as Smith could be back at his fitness requirements in a couple of weeks with strenuous training.

I honestly can't understand how you could defend Carlisle and throw Smith under the bus outside of one is seen as having more skill than the other.

Not all drug users become addicts. Carlisle has an unhealthy habit, I am not defending it. But you are creating a potential situation out of nowhere with little evidence. Tom Liberatore got caught KO'd on pills and sorted himself out. Buddy has a known substance issue, but is still a superstar.

But this is apples and oranges. One is about behaviour which can cause the club to be brought into disrepute. The other is about personal commitment. A lot of players have drug habits, less get caught on Snapchat.

Deathanxiety gets good mail. I'm pretty shocked tbh, he lives with Curnow and was looking much thinner in photos I'd seen him in. He is probably home alone though while Ed is on his honeymoon.

Not what ODN says.......

Yes but as far as the ppl on this board are concerned he has come back to training unfit (unconfirmed) and should be delisted immediately......... It is a rediculous over-reaction esp when the same people are defending drug use as the lesser of two evils .........

I don't think anyone's calling for him to be given the boot entirely.

Delist + rookie is a very different scenario to a straight delisting.

It's a massive warning shot across the bow, and an indication to the rest of the list and any future draftees that game-time and contracts will go to the players who take their jobs seriously. The hope would be that Clem takes it for what it is, pulls his finger out, and fights for a senior spot in 2017.

if he has come back overweight it needs to be addressed. they can put him on a strict diet/training regime where he needs to achieve x by xmas and so on. until he does he isn't allowed back with the main group. will be a test of bolton and co to see what happens

Just quickly. I saw the twitter video first. Clem was one i noticed right away and i said to myself he looks overweight. Like he hadn't changed from when we first drafted him and also considering he looked very good at the end of the year. I know it's only two seconds or so but that's what i noticed. I was then told that we were looking at delisting one more person and that Clem was one we were looking at and that he had come back overweight. We will rookie him though if we do delist him.

I don't doubt your mail and SOS is probably not a fan of any Shane Rogers recruits but I'll be extremely surprised if we rookie Clem.

Genuine question to all, regardless of support or otherwise of this rumour/suggestion. What role does Clem realistically play? Other than liking to dish it out, has some decent, but not outstanding skills. Small for the modern game. Like Yarran, does not have a tank, or seemingly the desire/ethics to get one to suggest a midfield role at this level. Not a prolific goal kicker. I fiddle around with the list and positional options, Clem is always the last one I put in, to fill the gaps, as he does not seem to fit anywhere. The likes of DVR, Gowers, the Irish may not command specifics, but it is safe to suggest they are flankers, which end to be confirmed, maybe outside mids. Just can't "fit" Clem (maybe like some of his clothes atm)

Very odd for a player to turn up to preseason training only to be cut with 1 year remaining and not re-rookied?

In defence of Clem Smith he was in his first season of senior AFL football last year. Many players have looked out of sorts in their first season so I am not sure where a lot of this is coming from. He like all players will either find his role in the team or ultimately be cut from the list. Many first year players do not even play senior football, Clem played 7 senior games. How about we cut him a little slack?

Someone going to make a draft thread where you try and predict the top 20 picks in order?

Happy to do that Cringle. How does this sound? You do it for this years draft and I will do it for last years?

Have wondered the same thing a number of times.

About the only role I can see him filling for us is a Puopolo-type small pressure-forward. However he'd need to show an ability to kick a few goals too to get a permanent spot up there, can't afford to have a bloke doing nothing but negating a defender.

Reckon he'd be a liability down back, with just about every forward (tall or small) able to out-mark him. And unless he goes all Crippa on his tank in an off-season, he's going to be cooked by half-time playing in the midfield.

This is not as complicated as we're all making out. It's quite simple really. There are only two possibilities...

1. Internally, they rate him. So they give him a quiet talking to and get on with getting him right and back on track. No big deal at all.

2. Internally, they don't rate him. So they use this as a reason to delist/rookie/punish him, to make a statement to the rest of the group about commitment and standards etc.

It's all about how he's perceived by those in charge. This is not a big issue for a player and club to rectify if they want to. This isn't about kilos and skin folds, it's about the individual.

Except a statement isn't a statement if it only applies to the bottom 10 players at the club .........
