Looking at their website, GWS only have two listed "scouts" - Phil Scully and Paul Brodie.

I am sure there are others involved in their recruiting but I would say if MS3 is on the money it would be one of the above.

I'm going to have a stab and say it is Brodie. He has been around for a while - he was at Brisbane prior to GWS and was reportedly responsible for recruiting Rockliff.

Indeed. Will be Brodie.

The 2011 lottery will produce big winners, but it's going to be quite a while before they consistently influence games.

There will also be early picks who flounder, late picks who blossom.

You won't need a reminder of those who have bombed, while the bargains can be as interesting.

Tom Rockliff, the Brisbane Lions' 2011 club champion, was taken at No.5 in the pre-season draft of 2009 after being passed over in the national draft. There's a genuine steal.

They say he was picked by Paul Brodie, a mysterious football figure then at Brisbane, now with Greater Western Sydney, the man universally known in football as "Stooka".

$1m contract to Tom for the father/son package deal.
There are very few things that would turn me off Carlton but that would almost certainly be one of them. If I wanted to watch a club piss money away, I could go watch my local cricket club.

Didn't realise Paul Brodie has been with us before. Seems he has a track record as far as late picks go.

As Carlton’s fifth round selection (No.73 overall) in the 1999 National AFL draft, Houlihan was a bargain basement pick-up.

“We really liked him,” the club’s then recruiting manager Shane O’Sullivan said this week, “but on the way through [to the draft] he hit a bit of a poor patch and other clubs dropped off him.

“Some people probably saw him as not hard enough, but one of our scouts Paul ‘Stuka’ Brodie was a massive fan, and while he didn’t have to twist my arm, he was really pushing for Ryan.

“We always thought that with his skill level and the way he went about it he was always pretty good, so we took the punt, thought we might have been able to get him a bit later and that’s how it worked out . . . and he pretty much played straight away.”

More about Brodie and the Rockliff pick. Had pushed him that whole year so wasn't just having a stab in the PSD.

Paul Brodie always knew Rockliff was good enough and each time the 24-year-old laces up his boots he proves him right.

Rockliff broke his leg as a 16-year-old and was forced to play as a small forward throughout under-18s.

Despite kicking a bag of goals in a Murray Bushrangers side that went on to win that year’s TAC Cup, he was overlooked in the draft because recruiters did not believe he could play in the midfield.

Brodie, who was then the Lions’ chief talent spotter, came from the same area in country Victoria as Rockliff, knew his family, and was convinced that, injury free, he could prove the doubters wrong.

Brodie had an ally in Lions head of football Graeme Allan, who had been urged by Brodie to watch Rockliff closely that year.

“He (Brodie) knew all about him and put his name forward really early so we watched him a lot in his under-18s year,’’ Allan said. “Even though he had the dodgy leg and couldn’t run that well and was stuck in the forward pocket, we could see he was a great contested footballer.’’

Brisbane took Rockliff with pick five in the 2008 pre-season draft, a roll of the dice that hit the jackpot.

Not to blow my own trumpet, but I liked Rockliff the year he was drafted and would have liked to have seen us take a chance on him.
Issue was he mainly played forward for the Bushies that year, and didn't see a lot of time in the midfield.
Brisbane got an absolute steal in him.

Heard this from someone with an Essendon connection so not sure what to make of it, but it is the rumour thread.
Malthouse to give away coaching, didnt say that it would happen at the end of the year or earlier. With his wife's recent operation maybe there is something to it. Or then again it could be complete BS.

hmmm.... not sure about that one.

If his wife's condition turned sour (knock on wood that it doesn't), I don't think he'd hesitate to throw it away in a heartbeat. He's always been really grounded and knows that in the end, it's just a game. As long as she's alright, I think you'd see him continue.
