I feel dirty about Tomlinson too..not sure why though as I had never heard of him nor seen him play prior to the last fortnight.

yes we lost some "alleged" quality but most of whom we knew about before the trade period.

If anyone had said we would end up with pick 1, 8 and 11 2 weeks ago I bet most of us wouldn;t have beleived it.

We just have to buy into the rebuild and be patient.

I have a tendency to agree with this.

We have lost 4 contracted players, all of whom were in our best 22 and brought in 5 all of whom were not consistently in their clubs best 22.

I know the attitude of some of those 4 was pretty ordinary but it's the new coaches job to turn attitudes around. And I'm not too sure what attitude Everitt should have given he was almost part of a last minute deal.

We did GWS a favour by taking 4 contracted players who were superfluous to their needs and the bastards had the audacity to play hardball on the one that we really wanted.

I'll take a stab and say the only reason Lamb and Sumner will get games for us next year is because of those we lost. Phillips was so highly regarded that GWS took a former Geelong DFA even though he was still contracted. I'm fairly happy with Plowman and Kerridge, they could be long term good players for us.

Yes we have 2 extra first rounders but so we should given the quality of the players we let go.

We stuck by our guns for 2 weeks saying Yarran was worth a first rounder, as late as this morning (apparently) we refused pick 19 for him and then we blinked.

I think Richmond supporters are entitled to laugh at our antics.

I was positive last night because I really felt we had a decent enough rapport with GWS to get Tomlinson and was sure we'd continue to play hard ball with Richmond. That changed overnight and I'm now not so positive.

Hope I'm wrong with those other 3 from GWS, only time will tell and I console myself to the fact that there is no longer any doubt of our intentions to embark on a TOTAL rebuild.

Oh, and BTW there appears to be zero left for our trump first round PSD pick.

It's long and it's a rant so I'm sorry, now it's off my chest .... Go Blues.

We lost 4 contracted players, all of whom should have been best 22 but only 1 of whom played like it.

We brought in 5 players, 4 of whom have missed games through injury. I'm confident Plowman, Kerridge and probably Sumner are quality at AFL level.

Sounds like GC enquired about Everitt, rather than us trying to push him out.

GWS played hardball on Tomlinson because he (like McCarthy) has two years remaining on his contract. They'll keep both til they know they can cover the loss.

Lamb and Sumner will fight for one spot, competition should improve output.

GWS took Simpson over Phillips because Phillips wanted out, and they need experienced depth. They had Mumford and kids, and struggled when Mummy went down. Phillips will have time with us to earn his place.

By all accounts, Richmond were never giving up 12. We hoped, we played the game, and walked away with 19. Considering the talk at the start of trade week was that we should accept 31 - we've done the right thing. Could it have been better? Maybe. But it was the right move given the circumstances.

Richmond can laugh at us, but they spent two weeks haggling over Yarran, while every other team in the mix for finals was working to improve their lists. They grabbed a midfielder in Townsend who might be serviceable, and Yarran who will be handy if he switches on. That's not a big improvement for a side that has lost in week one of finals 3 years running. Hawthorn, Freo, WC, Geelong, Sydney, Adelaide, GWS, Collingwood, NM, PA, WB all good chances to finish ahead of Richmond next year. Could also see a surge from Brisbane and GC which may trouble them.

We'll be bottom 3 again, will load up on a few more kids next year and hopefully bring in Tomlinson. We're rebuilding, and we've brought in a heap of young talent in year one that will lay the foundation for the next few seasons.

Blues will be disappointed with today but happy with the period overall. Going into the day, they were hoping to convert pick 8 to pick 6, get better than 19 for Yarran, snare Tomlinson and see a decent player such as Aish remain stranded for the purposes of the PSD. None of those eventuated. Perhaps GWS were never going to trade Tomlinson. He wanted to come to Carlton but it doesnt always come off. And sure, 6 would probably have delivered a KPF but it would have meant another significant sacrifice to get it. We had no control over the Aish thing and as for Yarran - maybe we coul have waited till 1.59pm - we will never know. SOS and Macca hung really tough but all supporters should be assured of one thing - telling the Tigers to get stuffed and keeping him would have been a very very bad idea - this is a guy with serious issues. And lets not forget, we converted 20 and 21 into 11, and many fans would have been prepared to see 20 go with Yarran to get 12 and a later pick. Well, we ended up with 11 and 19! We got 8 for Henderson - everyone would have taken that at the start of trade week; Effectively 11 for Bell plus 20 (we'd not have used 41 other than for SOSOS points); 19 for Yarran (unders, but only just and he's Trouble); and 5 players for Menzel - a talented player with a poor workrate who was out of contract in 12 months and gone gone goneski). All those players in are young and talented and we get to add 4 more top 20 players in a month plus Jack Silvagni who is still growing and still improving. Be happy gang

I would expect Warnock to be delisted with Army a chance of a rookie spot if we wanna keep the same 36/6 split

Good summary. Some things just didn't pan out. 1,8,11,19 is a very strong draft position however and it will be a very exciting draft period for us.

Can confirm the Yarran point... there is a lot of baggage there. I am sure the likes of Bolton, McKay, SOS etc will sleep easier at night knowing he is not under their watch!

I couldn't believe that Yarran was on 500k wtf. No wonder SOS wanted him gone.

Fair post, if a little glass-half-empty. My thoughts:

Being best 22 in the team that finished last doesn't really carry much weight IMHO! Who is best 22 or not for each team is a relative thing and both the team's position and the strength of those player's competition within the team have to be taken into account. You only need to look at the numbers those GWS guys were taken in their draft years to see that they have talent. Of course, your draft number means nothing in terms of whether you can fulfill that potential, but it gives us an idea of how highly rated they were only a short time ago.

True they didn't stick around to see what a new coach would bring, but I would suggest that was the player's decision and not a reflection on the club. They have all known there would be a new coach from halfway through the season, yet decided they wanted out (well, Yaz and Hendo anyway). Menzel is a bit of an unknown regarding when trade talk REALLY started. Bell is obviously a different case altogether and the club should be pat on the back for allowing him to go home and getting a good deal for it too.

McKay said the Suns came to Carlton inquiring about Everitt. Can only take that on face value of course, but if true, there was no intention from the club to trade him so I can't see him being unhappy at all.

Yeah that was a bit shit, though it would be fair to say we didn't pay a lot for those four players either. Swings and roundabouts.

You are assuming GWS didn't know Phillips was leaving when they recruited Simpson (?). It's much more likely they did know, hence the recruitment. As for the new guys getting games - we will have to wait and see, but other than Menzel who hasn't performed well this year, there's no other competition for the mid/small fwd role, but we now have two young players to fill it. Smart move IMHO. Depth and potential there now.

Yep, positive result.

Can't say I'm too happy with pick 19 either, but looks like we didn't have much choice. If anyone is to blame here, it's Yarran. He is the one who essentially hamstrung us into dealing with one club only, and they leveraged that to its fullest extent. If the club pulled off a pick better than 19, it would have been a significant win. Given that many 'commentators' thought we would only get a second, or in some brain-dead opinions, a third rounder for him, we have to say it was a satisfactory outcome.

Tomlinson not coming is disappointing. Would have topped off a great trade period, I agree.

Good point - the club has said they were going to rebuild and has, for once, delivered on their intentions. Was nice to be keep in the loop as supporters too - Trigg has done well in that regard.

That's always a bonus if it happens. We were collectively a little too excited about something which rarely nets a return. We have a pretty full list as it is now. If something decent comes along, it's great, but otherwise it's situation normal.

Hope that helps your mood!

Thanks for the response and your points are all good. I"ve already moved on (can't stay pissed at the club for any length of time anyway) and I'm happy to see what the next few years bring and certainly looking forward to seeing some high draft pick develop.

Amazing trade. Henderson was never going to be part of our next premiership. Yarran is a tool who is way too inconsistent. Menzel is the laziest and softest footballer on our list. Bell is the one player who gave his all for the jumper and I wish him all the best.
Now we need to nail 3 of the 4 picks to set us up long term.
