Did Hawthorn get Appropriate compensation for Buddy Franklin ? I don't think so, but they didn't sit around and moan about it, they became proactive, kept hitting the draft and brought in James Frawley, who had a bloody impressive finals series.

The main issue/bug bear of mine is how lop sided the Free Agency compensation is, it really pisses me off we got nothing for Eddie Betts (signing Daisy shouldn't have cancelled the FA compo out) and Waite and Melbourne cashed in big-time on overrated underachievers like Tom Scully and got way overs for Frawley.

Anyhow we got 'overs' for Henderson and Menzel (in the end) in the last trade period, and I'm very comfortable where our club's list is.

Where did I say I was referring to Buddy?

I was actually referring to Jonathan Hay, Nathan Thompson - moving them on and getting good returns was the beginning of the dynasty (plus the deal they did with Freo).

Re Free Agency - We have been dumb strategically until the last 12 months and it has cost us plenty.

We shopped Robinson around, and got no takers, he clearly was damaged goods, his trade worth was pretty much zilch.
But didn't we shop Robbo around AFTER saying he was pretty much done at the club? Brisbane showed interest, but knew they could pick him up for nothing if they waited. Of course incidents like these will devalue a player, but he should have been worth a pick in the mid to late 20's. It's not like he stopped playing when he was out there.

Buddy left through free agency, not a trade. Different kettle of fish. They got appropriate compo under free agency rules. They could afford to lose him (as the past two seasons have proven) and managed to lure the best free agent defender the following year.

IMO free agency compo works how it should. Hawthorn can afford to lose a player like Buddy. They don't need to replace him with a top 5 draft pick. An eternal bottom dweller like Melbourne can't really afford to lose their best defender and a top 5 pick is fair. They've lost a seasoned player for a kid who might end up being a dud and probably will take a couple seasons to come good anyway. As it turns out, Brayshaw looks like he might be alright, but he still has a way to go.
Eddie's contract and age probably would have got us band 2 compo at best. Knowing our track record, it would have likely been wasted. At best, Waite could have got us a pick that we probably would have passed on anyway.

I think Tomlinsons trade value will decrease this year to a late 1st rounder/Early 2nd (pick 16-20).

GWS only held onto him as it would have looked bad if they traded him and not McCarthy. With only a year left on his contract, negativity to not being traded last year when a deal was done, and GWS having promising academy players coming through. I feel our 2nd pick will get it done if its under 20.
I think that what might happen is that we do a deal for our first and second round picks for one or both of the GWS first rounders and Tomlinson. We might have to also toss in the Doggies pick for this draft period to give them more points.

Because his father played in 3 premierships before you were born.
And the guy bleeds blue and would probably retire if we tried to trade him.

And the best is yet to come with SOJ.

Lol, Robbo wasn't worth a 2nd round pick, even without all his off field baggage.

We are much better off without his toxic influence around the joint, we shouldn't lose any sleep over losing Robbo for zilch, we are richer as a footy club for finally making a stand on 'playing culture' issues and discarding the bums like Robbo who clearly were a bad influence on our younger players.

We also let Jeffy go cheaply to Melbourne on 'compassionate' grounds and that could work in our favour eventually IE The Dees owe us one, well help us out on a future trade.

We did not let Jeffy go on compassionate grounds.
He wanted nothing more to do with the coach, and they way the coach treated him at the club!

Redden: pick 17
Melksham: 25
Curtly Hampton: future 2nd round
Tom Bell: 21 and downgrade of pick 41
Rosa: 31
And that's just from the past trade period. No reason why he couldn't have got 25-30ish.
You can make a stand on playing culture while still getting reasonable value for a player. Start by not playing it out on public.

I'm as big a "Mick-hater" as the next guy but surely Jeff shares some of the blame on this.
  • dropped for poor performances
  • drunken brawling at 5am on your birthday
Although the fallout should have been handled in house...

Lets just say, something happened or was said to cause the
poor performance, drunken behaviour.

What bollocks, once the Robbo off field brawl scandal was leaked to the papers, it was impossible to get any value for him (I have no idea who leaked the story btw)

Also Robbo is hardly the player Redden is, and just because the Dees were dumb enough to pay overs for Melksham is irrelevant to this discussion.

As I've stated before Mitch Robinson is a bum who several times has publicly slagged off the club since joining Brisbane. Jamison and the other players don't think much of him either it seems.

Who cares if we didn't get anything for Robinson, JUST BE HAPPY WE ARE RID OF HIM.

Criticize Malthouse all you want, but I happen to think he is an excellent judge of character and was spot on labelling Robbo a 'bad egg'.

Pull all the faces you like.

Azul said what I meant. He was treated like a player that wasn't playing well, followed by a player that didn't look like he wanted his spot back in the seniors, and finally, as a player that was out late getting in drunken fights and lying to the club.

Concur.

So convenient that Mick gets blamed for everything wrong with the club and players ?

Maybe some players (not naming names) need to drink some 'toughen up' juice and stop blaming Mick (or anyone else) for the lapses in judgement they made in their personal life and footy careers.

Reckon the players at this club have gotten away with so much off field crap going back many, many years. But its much easier for them to blame Ratts, and then Mick, when things went belly up.

The leaked story would have only had a minimal effect on his value, if at all. The killer was saying that his time at the club was done if a suitable trade couldn't be done. If one team is dumb enough to pay overs for a Melksham, there's no reason another wouldn't pay what you consider to be overs for a Robbo.
His actions after he left the club have no bearing on the argument, nor your opinion of him as a person.
EVERYONE who barracks for the club should care that we got nothing for him. For all his faults, he had value to us on the field and gave his all when he stepped out there.
I NEVER criticised Malthouse and in the end it was the right decision to get rid of him. My argument is that he had value and we handled it poorly.

Had lunch with an old colleague of mine yesterday who happens to be Matty Knights' cousin.

1. Henderson is apparently seriously flying (hate him more now)
2. Matty and his wife really happy about what has happened to Hird and Essendon.
Point 2 is brilliant.

The answer you seek is in there.
