You'd certainly need to have no brain or be extremely desperate to make that trade imo.

This will be very interesting if Tomlinson names CFC and we want to package a deal, as he is surplus to GWS needs.

Right now I've gone cold on Tomlinson, I just don't see the fixation of getting him. James Stewart is also out of contract, and right now, I'd rather chase him (on exposed form)

So you are suggesting that both Carlton and GWS's recruiting team have no brain?

GWS have that many high picks that can't get a game due to other high picks a year ahead of them taking their spot.

Doesn't automatically mean that each and every one of them is a great player though, they aren't getting a game because of attitude, form or just not wanting it hard enough.

Was he a player not getting opportunity at an interstate club that wanted to come home and his preference was Carlton?


Yeah I've said I'd be happy with any of the GWS out of favour young forwards, but reckon we could get Tomlinson easiest and cheapest, as rumour has it he is very keen to come to us.

GWS didn't knock back the offer because it wasn't enough. We all know why they knocked it back. It hasn't really worked out well for them, has it?

No other club has as much potential talent not getting opportunity. Pickett and adhern are top 10 picks and haven't even been given a game yet.

a bit of respect for 4 'starting players at Carlton who couldn't make teh regular starting side at GWS -- please...

We gave up one pick for all 4.. And they are starters in game 4 of our rebuild - hold your horses.

I don't understand the obsession this place has with Tomlinson. Can someone show me a highlight reel?

Stewart and lobb were mid second rounders. Stewart at the time was a surprise massive reach. Second round kpfs almost never make it.

Tomlinson was a first rounder but he's never shown that he's anything more than a role player. Good to have but not a cornerstone of your team.

It's like saying that Watson is a huge talent because of where he was drafted.

Very hard to fit all that talent into 22. Why not help them out by getting talent to our footy club.

Sheik is right. Tomlinson is a mediocre player who's always struggled to get a game at AFL due to poor performance.

He may be a good get for the right price but let's not kid ourselves that he's the saviour.

TBH i don't think anyone here sees Tomlinson as our 'saviour'...

But we do see him as a talented young KPF who will be a good part of the forward line puzzle...but yes he is only one of 5 or 6 good forwards we need.
Definitely still worth our second pick at 19-20ish.

Logic of trading pick #1 also applies to GCFC.

GCFC also have multiple first round picks and O'Meara and Prestia who may want out.

Also a possibility that Sydney and Brisbane (who also have academy picks) could be interested in getting pick #1 (or an early first round pick if we can trade one) to enhance their known academy picks.

Imagine getting Mitchell and Sydneys first (say #14-18) for pick #6 if we get it from GWS, which would in turn allow Sydney to get a pick before their academy kids plus bid on GWS talent (and decrease GWS advantage). So many possibilities.

I think SOS has done the right thing in stating that we will consider a trade of our first pick.
Will be interesting to see who will offer the most (assuming we have pick #1 or 2).

Why do you rate those players? Cameron is a potential star. So is McCarthy.

The rest have shown very little at AFL level.

Not sure what it is about GWS but there seems to be this mass delusion that every player on their list is a budding superstar just waiting for an opportunity to shine.

Plenty of players in the 2s that are young and high draft picks.
They've just got so many high draft picks that they can't all fit in the 22. The hype around them is not delusion, its logic.

Ok tolminsons problem is he's a victim of his versitility, he doesn't play as the key forward because other guys in the same team are more one dimensional, it's the same reason why it was purposed that cameron was going to play at chb because at the time guys like patton boyd and mccarthy were one dimensional forwards.

Agreed, both of those years were excellent. Murph in 2011 was just about best in the comp. Gibbs in 2014 was a beast.

I guess I question why they haven't had more seasons like that.

Murph - Since 2011, injuries and captaincy have played a part. Change in gamestyle has also hurt his game, I think he's most dangerous when he has space to use his skills and running capacity, rather than under the packs. Of course the team getting worse has also impacted him (as it impacts 95% of players) but I can still think of many games when we have been pummeled and Murph has simply never given up. He has done all he could and was running and chasing til the final siren.

Gibbs - He is a fine player and has had a great career despite the criticism, but his 2014 stands head and shoulders above other seasons. Much of this can maybe be blamed on the club for not #releasingthegibbs earlier. One criticism I have though is that while he is an extremely skilled and very effective player, he doesn't seem to impose himself on the contest. And I don't mean in a physical way, but in the sense that I rarely feel like he's thinking 'F this, we are getting done, but I am going down fighting, I will never give up'. If Gibbs had a killer instinct, I feel he's be every bit as good as say Luke Hodge, or at least very close. May not be as much of a 'good bloke' though...

Yep. Appears to have lost the instinctive element of his game...throws ball on boot rather than looking for best option, hangs off packs looking for cheapies rather than getting it himself, corrals players and guards space rather than tackling.

At his age, with his size and skill set he should be spoken about in the same breath as the Dangerfield and Hanneberry and even Fyfe. Obviously he's a number of rungs below.

Because of the McCarthy situation. Hard to tell one recent re contracted kid that he needed to stay while selling another in the exact same situation to the highest bidder.

Look at the six players we have picked up from GWS thus far (Kristian Jaksch, Lachie Plowman, Jethro Lamb, Liam Sumner, Andrew Phillips & Mark Whiley) and if we are being totally honest, only Plowman looks like being a long-term player for us right now.

We all hold strong hopes that some of the others will make it too but you have to ask why it was those exact players that GWS were happy to part company with instead of some of the other guys they have on the list ?? I would of been beside myself if they had of said "in addition to Plowman, we'll throw in Hoskin-Elliott, Buntine & Smith" but that was never going to happen.

Methinks the deal last year was "we will give you Plowman because that's who you want but you have to take the other three as steak knives or its no deal". We did them a favour taking those players as they had to reduce their list size, it was a win for us based on the standard & age of our list but they were never going to give us four A-Graders in one hit.

Coniglio, Steele, ahern, Pickett, Kennedy, Haynes, McCarty, Hoskin-Elliot and Tomlison have all either not played at all or been dropped in 2016 and are all first round picks.

It was only pick #28.
Absolute bargain for Plowman alone.
So what is pick #1 worth if pick #28 snags 3 first rounders and a ruck?
