Re: Mark Thompson has the midas touch

Any other coach would have pulled those moves years ago. He hasn't done anything extraordinary. Just wasted too many years trying to get it right. He'd better get it right this year.

C'mon mate, at least give him some credit fro realizing his mistakes and correcting them. Bomber bashing is popular but give him credit where its due.

Renegade is the biggest bomber basher of them all. Renegade was his biggest critic during his rough patch, and is secretly hoping that Bomber will fail so that he can say 'I told you so'. Well, maybe not, but he's not one of Bomber's bigger fans.

That's nearly a compliment from you... :p
Is that you finally conceding that IF we win the flag, you'll be ok with him staying on?

Re: Mark Thompson has the midas touch

Bomber has had the choice this year to not do it all. I think he was trying that too much for too many years in a row and was getting burned out.

Sando and Balmey have a lot to give this club, with the latter proving his weight in gold. And that is some large weight.

I just like everything about the club, they had a good year with a loss to Sydney, followed by a win in the next pre-season. Then as we know we had one of the worst years in our clubs history, especially when reflecting on all of our expectations.

They had a hard look at themselves, did a few little tweeks and look at the difference. Leadership was shown from the Pres right down to the 36th player and all the rookie listed players.

SJ did something wrong, he put his hand up and said he did wrong. He took it on the chin and went on with it and came back a better and stronger player.

We have learned a lot, so has the coach. We should applaud that.

Te best thing bomber has done is help us finish 10th last year so we could pick up Joel Selwood.
It was all part of his plan.

If you go back in time you will find thats what everybody was saying for Geelong to succeed.

Everything except Harley as Captain, we all suggested Chapman.

Bomber should have known this long before this season.

Obvious moves in bold.

Jerry Seinfeld to George Constanza: "If every instinct you have is wrong, then the opposite would have to be right."

Re: Mark Thompson has the midas touch

I agree with Renegade.

He still gets out-coached in a few games (although obviously he cannot win all of them) and I think alot of improvement has came from the players... Not him.

Ling was a bloody good tagger, but it was Thompsons idea to change this last year.

This year he has just corrected one of his mistakes.

Re: Mark Thompson has the midas touch

i find it hard to see how a coach can be SO BAD and then SO IMPROVED in such a short amount of time. I agree with cats2rise in that Bomber is not the only one deserving credit for the turn around. I think Brian Cook and Neil Balme also have a lot to do with it!

He was told to shape up or ship out and he has done the former, to his credit. He was quite irresponsible last year in his behaviour and the poor example he set destroyed his credibility. I'm sure that he now recognises the value of the team of coaches and administrators around him and is using his actual game day coaching skills which we knew he had. I was furious with his resentful, unaccountable 'explanations' last year but I'm the first to praise him now - he and SJ are examples of the genuine turn around at Geelong.

Swallow your pride and give him some credit. Doesn't hurt to admit to being wrong once in a while.

Re: Mark Thompson has the midas touch

I think that i am the BIGGEST fan of Bomber i voted for him to stay in that poll and I want him to go on to coach the cats in 2008. I love him a hell of a lot more then Gary Ayres, i couldnt stand that bloke and was glad to see the back of the arragant pig. And before all u bomber bashers post after me and say "aw but at least he got the team to a GF!!!" he did do that BUT he didnt get them to a WINNING GF. I believe that Bomber can go one step better!!! And he has done a fantastic job with the boys this yr all for you bashers at the end of the season :thumbsd:

Comparing him to Gary Ayres - please!!! Bomber has done more for Geelong, despite his flaws particularly last year, than the destructive, negative Ayres. The playing group got themselves to the GF. I agree that we all hope Bomber can take the next step with Geelong - I have been justifiably critical of him but my loyalty to the team and the club override any reservations I had about him.

Re: Mark Thompson has the midas touch

The only thing out of that lot that I would say was innovative was Mackie off half back, but in saying that, that's where he played all of his junior footy so that would suggest he should have always played there.

I been on and off the Thompson bandwagon alot, but I think those decisions were more common sense.

What I do like, however, is the way he mixes up our forward line, going all tall or all small at times, which I think is innovative as it screws up opposition backlines.

I'll give him credit for that, but the other things, I'm not sure.

Re: Mark Thompson has the midas touch

The dismissal of Connolly and now, Pagan will keep Bomber on his toes. No-one is indispensable, particularly in footy. Success breeds success and while Geelong continues to gain respect after each win, so too does Bomber gain respect. We are fortunate at present that he is a stable and, to some degree, innovative coach. As far as I know he has never been disliked by the players as was the case with Pagan.

Footy Classified starring Bomber

For those interested Bomber Thompson is the guest on Footy Classified tonight.
I wouldn't be getting too excited though. No doubt he will be "proud of the boys", "one week at a time" and "keeping that big fat lid on".

Thanks for that Hoods!

Yeah, it will probably be a bit of that. Saw Mooney "On the Couch" a few weeks ago and thats pretty much all he had to say. What else CAN they say I guess??

At least Footy Classified will be talking about Geelong, this way, for more than the usual five minutes they give us each week.

Re: Footy Classified starring Bomber

Bomber and Caroline Wilson have a bit of a feud going so that should be interesting if anything.

Re: Footy Classified starring Bomber

They won't get much out of him, but will obviously talk about the lid....i thought they'd want Dean Laidley so the media can ask him for the 1 millionth time about who he wants to coach next year.

They are serious vultures and keep asking the same old boring questions.

I seem too be one of the few males in town that likes them both. Footygorically speking, of course.
