Ok, so he was the captain in Essendon's victorious 1993 grand final team, but why do people still insist on calling him 'Bomber' Thompson? Having been the Geelong coach for 7 years, surely someone could think of a better nickname for the guy?

As much as I hate Essendon, it's weird but I don't mind Thompson keeping his old nickname. Kinda "rolls off the tounge" and suits him.

(I'm sure Reno could come up with some new nicknames but! )

Yeah and Sheedy just thought everyone was calling him Bomber. So when he yelled it out the first time apparently it gave everyone a laugh.

Something about a television character back when he was a kid, who he imitated when he played in the backyard. I think that's where it originated. Exact details are a little sketchy, but someone on here surely has the origins of it.

That's the one. Bomma was the characters name and it was his mummy that gave it to him. Absolutely nothing to do with Essendon at all. Although, ask a Dons fan and they'll argue the point all night.

On the subject of Bomber, do you think we should renew his contract, or wait? If we renew now, it stops all speculation if we do have a bad patch. If we wait, there is every chance essendon will have a crack.

How many premiership coaches have been out of contract after they win it? Can't remeber any personally.
