Free Agency Brad Crouch [joins St Kilda as a RFA for pick 23]

Everyone's saying it helped him get the contract he wanted... he turned down 750 x 4 at the start of the year... now he's happy 600-650 x 5? Seems like him and his manager massively messed up.

Or was just desperate to get out of the club he loves 🤷

One thing I find interesting about the process now and similar to the Cameron situation, is how this contract works and how the trade works.

So now because the crows will very likely match this does this mean he's treated like he's contracted in terms of working out the trade? Normally contracted players demand a premium at the draft table. Where as this situation isn't going to next 2 firsts for example. Must likely something better than a end of first round pick.

Just interesting to watch to play out now.

One thing is clear, free agency works well for the player. Crouch will most likely get his 5 years in the end.

In the end we helped Brad Crouch get the contract he wanted from his club and he didn't have to venture into big bad Melbourne, nice result for him.

Saints will move onto our next target and try to work out a trade with Adam Treloar or simply allow our young midfielders a real crack at it. Not many Saints supporters are devastated that we couldn't snare the biggish fish this time round, better to be professional.

Adelaide get to keep their best midfielder, they still keep the first picks of all the rounds of the draft and all the extras, they get to feel like they stood up to bullying from St Kilda.

Everyone wins. Could have done better but I don't mind.

the saints are destined for more years of mediocrity. Think that’s abundantly clear.

Its a bit sad your club don't rate him that highly.

Apparently we rate him what we think he’s worth and have made an offer accordingly, which suits us and Brad who has accepted it.
Apologies that it wasn’t done to suit you.

Love the way the Saints played this. Simply wouldn't mortgage their future on a half decent mid. Played it smart. If they miss on him, it's not a big loss really. If they get him, it's on their terms.
And they pushed the offer upto one that would be more than he would have accepted had Adelaide dealt with him directly.

Not the first time and getting caught with drugs is not going to improve anyone’s value

I agree with you but doesn’t help their very mediocre midfield press for finals. They are just becoming relevant and need to improve that squad.

Regardless of whether or not this may seem silly, I'm glad teams are finally starting to stand their ground and match offers. People laughed at Gold Coast when they let Jack Martin go for nothing, but really, he was never going to reach his potential with them, and it opened up a list spot for a kid who potentially could. People will say Crouch got what he wanted, but does he really want to come back after telling everyone he's leaving? He may very well stay end up with the contract he wants, but he no doubt would've fractured several relationships with people at Adelaide in the process, which may come back to bite him later if he stays. Yes, crows may pay more than what they wanted, but it will make players think twice before thinking they can just easily walk like Lever, McGovern, Greenwood, Tippett etc.

I hope more teams will stand their ground in the future, so players don't just walk to wherever they want so effortlessly, even if the club may lose something/has to compromise.
