Free Agency Brad Crouch [joins St Kilda as a RFA for pick 23]

Yes, it certainly would. Though that may change depending on what happens with Saad.

What do you think the Bombers would offer?
Not sure tbh but they'd have a huge friggen net if he went to the PSD. Saints no hope.

Trade not out of the question though.

Adel to take pick 23 & give it to GWS for Hately who is a first round pick 2 years ago. It’s smart business for a rebuilding club.
But the question remains whether the Crows hierarchy are that intelligent to see what is obvious to everyone else

Seems their supporters aren't but hopefully sanity prevails and their management crack on and move forward ...... its the smart thing to do and its what good well run clubs would do!!

Conveniently timed for the Crows time limit to expire in the middle of the first day of trade if you ask me. My guess is the reason papers weren't lodged until this afternoon as the teams have already negotiated a trade and they'll just slip it in on Wednesday right after saying they've matched. Can't see any other reason St Kilda would have waited this long to put forward their offer.

Regardless of whether or not this may seem silly, I'm glad teams are finally starting to stand their ground and match offers. People laughed at Gold Coast when they let Jack Martin go for nothing, but really, he was never going to reach his potential with them, and it opened up a list spot for a kid who potentially could. People will say Crouch got what he wanted, but does he really want to come back after telling everyone he's leaving? He may very well stay end up with the contract he wants, but he no doubt would've fractured several relationships with people at Adelaide in the process, which may come back to bite him later if he stays. Yes, crows may pay more than what they wanted, but it will make players think twice before thinking they can just easily walk like Lever, McGovern, Greenwood, Tippett etc.

I hope more teams will stand their ground in the future, so players don't just walk to wherever they want so effortlessly, even if the club may lose something/has to compromise.

I would normally agree with you. The problem is they wouldn't table an offer to him. they have been really petulant on the trade. If they made a solid offer 4x550-600k and St Kilda made a better one, so be it. Instead they have carried on like they were getting pick 2 and have almost tried to force him out only to draw him back in when it didn't pan out. They potentially keep a player who doesn't want to be there, contracted for too long, with a brother who is probably also annoyed, at a time they are trying to rebuild their culture and load up on high end draft picks. You've done a pretty good job of polishing that turd, but at the end of the day, its still a turd.

Well, even if it ends up terribly for the crows, it'll also end up less than ideal for Crouch. It will make players in general think twice before thinking they can move easily. That's the risk clubs need to take if we are to stamp out this culture of players thinking they can just move to whatever team they want. Clubs may lose something, but so does the player involved.

Either Adelaide is so awful that he's taking a 30% pay cut to leave, or Adelaide fans are getting a wakeup call as to just how much they overrate their stars.
It's actually just crazy that he can even be labelled as a "star".

He is genuinely a below average midfielder in the AFL, most if not all clubs have 3-4 midfielders ahead of him. He's most likely not even a top 100 midfielder (4th/5th in line at most clubs).

They be better off losing him for nothing than having him hang around poisoning the well.

Agree with most of what you are saying. We as a club need to take a stand at some point. Also, in this case, the club came out and said that they would not accept anything less than band 1 compensation. To turn around and then not match this deal makes us look like a joke. It would be completely amateurish.

I do have to disagree with you on a couple of things. One is that Jack Martin was a delisted free agent, and could therefore nominate to be picked up in the PSD. As Brad is a RFA the Crows do not have that as final option, if they match, and a suitable trade cannot be organised, my understanding is that the we would have to honour the original offer and he would stay on our list. The second is about the fractured relationships and not being able to come back from it. As an example Sydney have stood firm on both Ryan O'Keefe and Tom Papley wanting to leave. Both have come back and gone on to later recommit to the club, with O'Keefe winning another flag and a Norm Smith afterwards.

We had 3 year extension with triggers on the table but it was pulled as Brad wasn't interested in a short term deal and explored free agency. Now that's it's 5 at such a low rate, we should be matching. But I don't trust us to. I'm not sure why you don't think we should.
You dont think his management went to Crows and said saints are offering this, do you wanna match?

I'm talking before he accepted the saints offer...

A lot of people just don’t seem to understand how RFA compensation works...

Not sure you can blame ppl when the ppl paid to know about these deals had no idea also. If the figures they were reporting were remotely close it may have helped

That's not the point. Him staying could prevent players from leaving in the future if he stays. It's about standing your ground and not letting players think they can just walk whenever they want so easily. Crows have been poached a fair bit over the last decade, and this may very well be first step in stopping that trend. It won't eliminate it completely of course, and it's not perfect, but it will send a strong message and improve their culture. And Crouch will be forced to improve his attitude and focus on footy, as opposed to his contract.

I know Jack Martin was a different case, but the point is still the same. They risks getting less or nothing/paying more, so players don't get what they want so easily. Both are cases of clubs standing their ground, regardless of the different circumstances. Clubs don't care how a player wants to leave, as long they don't think they can just easily walk to wherever they want without any hassle. And I'm sure the relationships aren't always easily repaired. Even if it is repaired, it makes the player have to put in more effort to earn respect back.

That's what I think will happen personally. I still think Crows don't want him at their club because there maybe off field issues that some only recently been shed light on with the drug incident a month back. Having him influence younger players coming into the club will be a bit of a concern.

My understanding is that if we match, then the PSD is off the table. If that is not the case, I am willing to be corrected.
