So it sounds like Crouch would be a like for like replacement for S.Thompson when he gets to his peak physical shape?

Considering the Suns have almost zero inside midfielders, Viney would be perfect for the Gold Coast. I think they'll bid on Viney, and I wouldn't be surprised to see Melbourne let Viney go. The fact Viney was "signed" by Melbourne two years ago, you'd think they will still commit to him.

Grundy looks an awesome prospect, and would be perfect for GWS, who need a 2nd ruckman with Giles. Brogan will probably retire this year. Based on what I've seen, Grundy looks much better around the ground than Longer, who GWS passed on last year.

At this stage, you'd think it would go

GC: Whitfield
GWS: Grundy
Melb: Viney
Melb: Stringer
Port: Toumpas. :(

I haven't seen Crouch enough to make a judgement, but most experts have said he would have been a 5-10 prospect in this draft. I'd say Selwood is a good comparison for Crouch.

Not elite speed, but is solid in every area, strong and has a lot of courage. Thommo also a good comparison.

At the end of last year, we didn't have an obvious lead ruckman, yes we had Jacobs but he was still not a lead ruckman in the smae was as he is now. Why didn't we list Grundy as that 17 year old?

If he is as good as everyone is saying and Crouch is only 5-10, I'm missing it?

Jacobs was our obvious lead ruckman.

On Crouch, I've only seen a couple of games on TV, but he seems to favour the handball rather than kicking, but I think that's because he's mostly farming the ball out.

yeah and still got a heap the ball. the guy is seriously talented. and i rate laird not too far behind as well. laird has better disposal (other than his 2 awful shots at goal vs port) but he's very, very clean. adelaide have done their homework big time on these two in particular.

Watching him play(Crouch)he would be a better kick L & R at the same time when Danger played for us (Westies)
is a thinker and not a pan-nicker when he has the ball (Laird) would be in the same boat but not as BIG

As for Middleton a country boy will be drafted or rookied

Jacobs established himself very firmly as our lead ruckman last year. Rucks are also far harder to predict a year out from their draft age and come with inherent risk.

We needed a classy midfielder much more than we needed a ruckman.

100% agree but he wasn't last October/November when the draft was.

He has talent and was our best option in the ruck but wasn't close to the same player he is now.

The point is, we had a young AFL-calibre ruckman who, while perhaps not the best in the AFL, was well up there and only going to improve at his age. Simply put, ruck was far less of a need for us than classy midfielders.

At that stage, Dangerfield still hadn't stepped up and Sloane was still hitting his straps, so we basically had Thompson and daylight.

Yeah, congratulations but you can say that about any 17 year old kid in any position.

It's about projecting development.

Don't try and make this out as if i'm bagging Sam Jacobs or even Brad Croutch, but just questioning why we didn't look at Grundy when he was an SA lad and clearly had plenty of talent.

You're right, we possibly did but this won't be the last someone questions why we took Brad Crouch over someone else from his draft class.

Well I guess you have to look back through the better ruckman in recent times. Dean Cox, Aaron Sandilands, Mark Jamar, Darren Jolly and Jacobs for example were all picked up in rookie drafts. It's pretty well accepted that ruckman are more of an unknown quantity than players in other positions, and its only generally the athletic freaks (Naitanui) who go high in the draft. Then you can look at Carlton and Kreuzer. While he has been cruelled by injury so far, I think in hindsight, they would love to have Cotchin in their midfield group right about now with Jacobs tapping it down to them, and Warnock/Hampson as backup.

I'm not exactly sure how Grundy was tracking last year, but a lot can change from the ages of 16-18. Would he keep growing as projected, was he benefiting too much from being a giant compared to his opponents etc... etc...? With mids it's a bit easier to predict, and lets not forget that we were absolutely crying out for more class in our midfield after last season. With what we were giving up, a classy midfielder was just a far safer bet, and I think more of a required need.

I think we and the Crows could all see how good Jacobs was going to be. He averaged 32 hitouts over 19 games last season, it was just a matter of doing the required work to get our midfield structure to gel with him.

At the time I did think that we might have missed out on a unique opportunity. Ruckmen generally take a few years to come on and getting a good one early would have been a huge advantage in terms of player development. However, I'm not unhappy with the position that the club took by going with Crouch (who I also recommended), he looks to fill a need for us and be a great player for our future.

Actually, that order is impossible...

If GWS bid on Viney, then Melbourne have to take him at #3 - ahead of Stringer. If neither GC nor GWS bid on Viney, then Melbourne will get to pick him up in the 2nd round (such are the vagaries of the F/S rule). Either way, he certainly won't be selected with pick #4.

Apparently Melbourne are planning to pull a swifty with their first round pick. The idea is that they trade say pick 3 for pick 14-18 plus a player. They can then use the lower pick for Viney and get the player for free.

No doubt the AFL was endorse this only to change the rules a megasecond before we have our first father/son.

They can't trade pick #3 if GC or GWS make a bid for Viney. Under those circumstances, they would be forced to use pick #3 on him - and that pick would then be locked away and could not be traded.

If neither GC nor GWS bid for Viney, then they can do whatever they want with all 3 of their 1st round picks.
 
Keep drafting quality mids and trade for ruckman rather than have them mature on our list for 5 years taking up space. Has worked for the swans for the last 10yrs ?! How about Crouch's brother - strategically sensible and likely to land in our draft region ?

Mini-Draft region? :confused: I would think he would be pretty high up in next years draft. Him and Aish.
