Maybe you can help us lure Nick Westhoff and Kelvin Moore to join family in SA.

Eagles get: Cassisi, Surjan
Lose: Ebert, 4th rounder, T.Notte

Port get: Nick Westhoff, Kelvin Moore, B.Ebert, 4th rounder
Lose: Cassisi, Surjan

Hawthorn get: T.Notte, 4th rounder
Lose: Lance Franklin

Richmond get: 4th rounder, Lance Franklin
Lose: Nick Westhoff, Kelvin Moore, 4th rounder

thoughts?

Richmond would be happy....

I think a straight swap for Surjan is closer to the mark in what the players are worth, also Surjan fit our needs more, a tough small backman who can also play forward.
Surjan is a no. Very attractive idea watching him play in recent years - I was a big fan, personally.

But he has taken a step back this year. Doesn't seem as quick and obviously out of form. Not sure what's going on with him, maybe injury or Port malaise wearing on him.

I would think that PA would offer a very juicy carrot for Ebert. Fact is he can play. The upside for him on PA's list it huge. I would expect pick plus player for him. or just there first rounder that would be anywhere from 5-15.
Yep. This is what I was getting at.

Ebert would walk in as an 'experienced' player who almost certainly assumes a leadership role and will get maximum opportunities to develop in his natural position.

Compare that to his future at the Eagles - less $$$, less recognition, lower on the pecking order, fewer opportunities and being forced to play out of position on the HFF.

For Brad, and Port, these would seem like attractive propositions.

How is any of this true? He is 21 and you need to be an established player or Chris Judd to be given a leadership role in your first year.

The reality is it is hard to see Ebert getting a whole lot better than he is currently. Young does not = potential to get better. He is already a big body and he can find the ball, there hasn't been a steady improvement over the last 4 years, just more of the same. He might have peaked.

Unfortunately Port are going to be in his ear every year about coming home. A player swap is probably most likely, someone like Surjan or Salopek. Both are coming off major surgery and playing poorly at the moment but when fully fit they are walk up starts.

Is there three midfielders who will be there next season that are more experienced?

Travis Boak, Robbie Gray, Jacob Surjan, young Hartlett maybe, old Cassissi. Not exactly a stellar midfield battle.

Ebert would immediately get a crack in the center square.

I strongly disagree with this.

Good job on the selling. For their sake, I hope Port executives phrase it a little better :)

No love for Alipate Carlile and Cameron Hitchcock?

But seriously, yes, there will be.

If he struggles to be a walk up start at one club he will struggle to be a walk up start at any club.

but all of this is pointless. All I am saying is that we will be after him and you will probably take whatever we offer and run. He might turn into a decent player one day because he has the workrate, but I can't see it happening.

Isn't Alipate your Full Back?

Hitchcock I don't know much about...

One I do like is the skinny kidd, Pittard, but he is still 12-24 months away.

If he struggles to be a walk up start at one club he will struggle to be a walk up start at any club.
I beg to differ. I think he clearly is best 22 at Port Adelaide atm. Well get a better look tomorrow - but I'm predicting Ebert to have a good game. He's essentially played only one quarter since being dropped and he should be eager to respond.

He's not as bad as you think ;)

If someone like Priddis, with his athletic prowess, can be the "BEST PLAYER IN THE AFL... statistically" (Tony Shaw) then I'm sure Ebert can make something of himself.

Surjan has played exclusively in the back pocket for... 4 years now? Gray spends 99% of his time up forward.

If you really want to know, the players he would be fighting for a spot are Salopek and Thomas. Salopek can kick, so we'll go with Salopek there.

Would he be a better option than Thomas? Marginally.

Would he make us a better team? Doubtful.

Is this a pointless exercise? Yes.

Port still want him and will pay overs for him.

Why trade to him to Port after putting important development into him?

Ebert is improving all the time, his possession count isn't flash hot in 2011 because of the way he's been playing and how he's be working on the defensive side of his game. If he continues to work hard on his weaknesses when he does move into the middle he will be allot better than he would have been has he played their from day dot.

If Surjan was playing at the same level as previously Ebert in a straight swap wouldn't cut it, it would cost much more. Last season he had minor knee surgery, a limited preseason and has struggled in the first half of the year to break into a side not travelling too well. Also the altercation between his girlfriend and Motlop that went to court has caused issues within the playing group, thats one reason why Motlop was up for trade last year but it didn't happen. Surjan hates Motlop.

Depending on a medical on his knee at 25 he isn't too old and we have been looking for a gun small lock down backman for some time. IMO he could also play that defensive forward role.

When fit and in form he's a tough hard at it player who beats his opponent and impacts on games, the type you want in finals and grand finals.

Again grabbing Surjan would be making the best of the situation and basically trading out a type of player we have an excess of (inside mids) and replacing them with a quality type of player we do need close to our preferred age bracket.:thumbsu:

i'm sorry but if this was true this thread wouldn't exist. it's probably happened before but i can't remember ever giving him votes.

as for surjan, he would imo have a hard time beating out hurn, butler, s.selwood or waters. he would be a huge upgrade over the likes of a mcginnity though.

He's a better defender than Hurn, Butler, Selwood and Waters. I'd feel safer with Surjan playing in the back pocket in a final on Rioli, Ballantyne, Milne, Betts etc than anyone on our list assuming his knee is fine and he's got a proper preseason of training under his belt.

He's hugely underrated by the wider AFL community because of Port Adelaide's low visibility in the AFL. The sticking point will be price and Port Adelaide's mentality going into trade week. Will they have a fire sale and rebuild through picks with a mass clean out or not? It's easier said than done given their many challenges moving forward.
