The last time I saw a coach flip was back in the day when Laids when ballistic during one of the breaks and you could hear his screaming from the stands.

What a ridiculous 50, umpires need to err on the side of not giving a free or 50.

There is no common sense in what transpired there, McMahon shouldn't have picked up the ball but the only reason it didn't go straight back is Banfield.

Disgraceful.

I'm not impressed at all.

Considering it shouldnt have been a 50 in the first place, McMahon handled himself very well getting this spray i thought, showed respect. Scott i reckon has spoken about giving away the brain fart goals and just snapped on this one. So yeah very pleased McMahon just sucked it up and of course any brain farting, look out!

I don't mind seeing this on the odd occasion, but would rather he did it when Brady kicked the game-altering turnover against Richmond.

With the shitload of turnovers and undisciplined acts so far this season its about time Scott unleashed some flair. I mean I'm all for his calm and collected approach but a good old fashion spray every now and then might actually do some good.

Why are you all so certain that he hasn't given the team a pasting behind closed doors?

It would be good if he did it to a player that actually did something wrong.

It would be even better if he exhibited that defending the club from the shite umpiring.

But McMahon was in the wrong because clearly it was a mark to JB and he refused to give the ball back, holding up play in the result of a 50 metre penalty.

It's supporters like you that make us as a whole sound like whining little bitches. We didn't lose the game because of bad umpiring, there is much more to dissect from the loss then that.

Another troll idiot infiltrates this board.

Mcmahon has just as much right to hand the ball back to JB as Banfield does, Mcmahon was closer to the ball so he picked it up to throw it back, banfield acted like a tosser and kept trying to strip the ball which resulted in a free.

Mcmahon COULDNT give the ball to Banfield because he would of been called for a 50. he couldnt drop the ball either, his only option was to try and get it back to JB which is what he tried to do

It is a 50m penalty, you have to give it over straight away, if an opposition player wants to take the ball you have to let them take it, if you wrestle with him then it is time wasting. That is why Scott went off his nut. You don't take these risks in range of goal.

Rule 18.1 (f)

- Failing to return the ball quickly and on the full to a player who has been awarded a free kick.

McMahon was not obliged to hand the ball to any other player, and his capacity to carry out his responsibility in relation to the rule was hindered by the clown standing directly in front of him. If he had handed the ball to the Brisbane player in front of him he would have contravened rule 18.1 (b):

It was NOT a 50 metre penalty under any rule interpretation that exists in the rule book.

You and the coach need to get a rule book and read it.

I love a wiki warrior. :p

Rule 18.1 (b) Engages in Time Wasting

Which is what the 50m was for. If he was in possession of the ball or if the ball was right next to him and he just picked it up and was trying to dish it to JB and someone wrestled with him then that is different. He ran over to get the ball when it was nowhere near him and then got stuck in a wrestling match for the ball when he shouldn't have gone and picked it up in the first place, he was obviously wasting time.

I love myopic conformists that have no feel for the game. You would make an excellent umpire.

So we should expect to see every player that takes their position on the mark before throwing the ball back to their opponent get pinged for 50 metres from now on?

I challenge you now to inform as to when this has ever happened before in the entire history of the AFL.

I eagerly await your response.

McMahon is only obliged to return the ball quickly to his opponent if he already has it. The ball was on the deck, and the onus was therefore totally on the Brisbane player to get it.

Having said that I thought the Coach calling him an effing smart arse was slightly OTT. But it was a silly mistake.

Picking the ball up to hand back to your opponent is now a 50 metre penalty? The ball now gets back to the recipient quicker if no one picks it up?

Can you find this in the rules or point out another example?

Rubbish mate, Scott McMahon wasnt even aware it was a mark at first and went to play on. He then heard the whistle after running in to pick up the ball, stopped, tried to give the ball to Brown and Banfield knocked it out of his hands as he was about to throw it to Brown.
The umpire made a howler of a decision and good on McMahon for not flying off the handle. I think my drink bottle would have been flying in the direction of the boundary fence if it was me . It was a shocking decision and the AFL needs to review the whole 50 mtr penalty system. Personally I think we should go back to 15 mtrs for minor offences and keep 50 mtrs for more serious infringments.

You need to get down off your soapbox, your attacks on other posters whose view differs from yours is narrow minded and self indulgent. Who made you the expert on everything North Melbourne? The way you prance around here as if you're the know all Orb is boring. This isn't the Bay where all of that is part and parcel of the game but not here. We are all North supporters and a civil discussion with differing opinions is what I'm looking for. Not a poster with an e-hammer looking at bludgeon any posts that may not concur with yours

The problem with your argument is that MacMahon didn't give the ball straight back. He picked it up (his choice, thus assumes that responsibility) and took one step away until stopped by Banfield. If he just bent down and picked up the ball and handed it back then there would not have been a 50 metre penalty.

I ask you to take another look at the incident as it isn't as simplistic as you're making it out to be. Scott was absolutely correct in blasting MacMahon, he's a supposed senior player and he let the team down badly.

WTF is he picking up the ball at all??!!!!

He plays too cute for my liking at the best of times and this appeared to be another smart arse example that back fired big time.

A player of that experience...good grief, defending the indefensible...

Take a teaspoon of concrete and harden up for gods sake...if that's all Scott did, go and read "The Coach" to see what a real pasting is about.
