Ironically it was Brisbane having to match Eric Hipwood at pick 14 that caused the rule changes to take place. They had a tantrum about it

What? The rules changed the year before, because of Isaac Heeney being matched with pick 16/17 from Sydney.

We matched Eric with like 4-5 picks in the 30s/40s, we were not complaining.

And we have a winner! Hipwood and Marshall make two previous first rounders through the academy, with the third coming this year.

I think Fletcher is actually listed as an academy player as well but that's just nitpicking.

I thought so but when I checked he was officially selected as a father son.

Yeah I don't think it really makes a difference, rules for matching are the same regardless. But he is listed on the Brisbane academy page as a graduate as well, so I figured I may as well mention him before someone came in with the "well actually"

Well that's just straight up false.
Mate don’t engage with that poster. I already argued with them about this topic, pointing out both Marshall and Coleman who have been first round academy picks (plus Hipwood), yet they continue lying about it in various threads.

They know Brisbane have had multiple first round academy picks, they just lie about it regardless

Coleman is not first round.
He went undrafted in 2018 - anyone could've picked him in that draft as he didn't show the potential yet.
He got selected on 2019 draft as an overager. Pick 37.

Nope. 2020 draft, Pick 24.

That's his younger brother - Blake Coleman.
Delisted and long gone. you can argue the first round semantics on him though.
Just goes on to prove we get crap players in our first round academy pick as well then.

No, that’s the Blake Coleman I was referring to to begin with. Keidan is irrelevant.

The question is whether Brisbanes academy has fed them first round talents in the past. It has in fact given them 3, with a 4th coming this year.

It’s also irrelevant that Brisbane failed his development. At the end of the day, he was a first round pick. There are plenty of failed first round talents, doesn’t mean they weren’t drafted to begin with.

If you or anyone else wants to deny these facts, you’re not worth engaging with

Plus the rort of what they could do with those first round picks in trades while still getting the first round talent. Only took the afl a long time to realise (or care)

I wouldn't mind Starcevich but I don't think he's anywhere near what West Coast is offering him.
Hes not but that’s what you have to offer players like this to even consider coming to a 1 win team.

If they improved on their 5 wins season last year I doubt they would have to offer this sort of coin for him to consider it.

They would also have the cap space where it would be heavily front ended that it won’t be a contact they regret down the line.

Also if the reports are true and he wants to have a crack at the midfield, there is only one team that would likely even be able to provide that opportunity for good or bad.

Pick 15 for Starce aye? Whose your daddy WCE
