Marley is a good player and having a very good season. 1v1 he is a beast, his ability to step opponents and turn them inside out is also very good. We couldn't hide his kicking because of all the other bad kicks we had in defence and he had a pretty woeful season last year.

Was woeful last year yet his DE% in 2016 was >80%, down to 78% this season YTD. People overly focus on an occasional poor disposal and use it as a reference point. Marly was always a better user than many gave him credit for.

Would be interested to see what his KE last year vs this year is. DE doesn't really tell the full story.

You think he played well last year?

Not sure where you'd get that. Kick to handball ratio has dropped this year (0.78) compared to last (1.06) so you'd expect his DE% to improve as a consequence.

No, didn't say that. Was only making an observation about his disposal. Think his mind was elsewhere in 2016, seems to be pretty switched on this year in the little I've seen of him. Hopefully the trade was the impetus for him to get back on track as I've always liked the way he goes about his footy.

Seriously? Not an offensive threat?
He is an offensive threat. I am saying I would rather him get 25 and be an offensive threat, have his opponent kick 2 than get 10 and have his opponent kick 0. The role of the small defender has changed significantly and people tend to over value "having goals kicked on them" in the age of team zone defence.

Who here is really concerned with goals that may or may not be kicked by a guy he's nominally sitting on? Come on guys hands up. The game has changed that much that unless a player loses a number of isolated one v one's people don't care about the number of goals they leak and even then an out is given because the structure fell down further afield to allow those one on one's.

The real issue for Maynard is his propensity for moments of monumental chaos on the last line that directly result in goals to the opposition (not necessarily his "direct opponent"). The most obvious being the handball cluster **** v GWS where his handball hit the deck when his teammate was under 2 metres away. A goal resulted from the direct turnover and five minutes later the match is lost.

IMO, he can be a defensive presence and an offensive threat because players are expected to have all round games in 2017 and in fact his is quite strong, but in order to play a deeper role he has a pressing need to work on getting those "chaos" moments under control as Pittard once did. Until that time the greatest benefit for both parties is for him to be in a role that allows him to remain an offensive threat from the defensive half, but also limits the impact of those disaster moments by being further afield.

In other words, give him a run on the half back flank with a licence to run forward!

Precisely. In an ideal world he'd slot into Steele's HHBF role which sees him start on the defensive side of the square and roam where he likes, but baby steps so a back flank with the license to run works for me!

Where's Ed to start to bag him?
Nah Ramsay is his new whipping boy now. Where's the fun in shitting on a kid if they've played more than 20 games?

Still going at 83% disposal efficiency which is high level. Has kicked 5 goals for the year which is a solid return playing his role. 5 goals 1 too which is a rare level of accuracy from a guy wearing black and white this year. Also would have more than the 2 goal assists that he has if the recipients of his lovely passes inside 50 were better exponents of the set shot.

My boy!!!! Maynard has been my favourite young player for a long while now, I knew he just needed time to put all the pieces together. Stand by my earlier statements, future 200 gamer. An absolute bull and EXACTLY what we need coming out of the backline. He doesn't need midfield minutes, keep him where he is!!!!

Nah, Williams had THE worst attitude of any Collingwood player I've seen in 2016. I stood up for him for way too long last year, but his attitude was pathetic, especially given what we'd done for him to keep out of the joint. He is a shithouse bloke and that was why he didn't perform last year, not because we couldn't hide his kicking.
