Player Watch Brayden Maynard

Hey spartan-magpie, looks like the Maynartaur of 2016 is coming along nicely. (Have I got the spelling right?)

Big mistakes aside, I love having him in the side, love the way he stands up and does not go missing. Bruzzy's well past the point of being played just for experience and games; he's best 22 now. Interesting the calls on here to play him out of defence, to minimise the impact of his errors. Would we be cutting off our nose to spite our face?

I think he is wasted in the back-line and be far more a potent weapon perhaps on a wing. And hopefully a midfield role in the future.
Maynard is improving every week this is my high lite of 2017 re player development.

Yesterday I saw "it"
That something unidentifiable that you notice
He is going to be a gun
I saw "It" yesterday too. I don't know why the guy gets such a bad rap. He's right. They do all float down here!

We should have him running through the middle.

The guys we have delivering the ball to the forwards (guys like Greenwood, Crisp, Blair etc) just don't have the kicking penetration this guy has... this guy can launch long goals, hit targets and put defenders under pressure.

I'd love to see him replacing Crisp in the middle.

He definitely got midfield minutes yesterday. Started in the centre square at one point in the last quarter, stayed outside the contest as his opponent was drawn in, received the handball and proceeded to drill it inside 50 to Fasolo on the lead.

I must watch that again i thought he started of the half back flank and then ran wide as his opponent ran to the contest. In the middle and became a loose player running forward.

Love his hardness and the way he kicks. Still think HB is the place for him. Strong physical presence and an ability to attack off HB with his foot is what we need. Shannon Hurn like in what he can provide from the backline.

Yep.

It would have normally been Crisp taking that ball and turning it straight over.

Agree 100%. Can't see him carrying that size as a midfielder without breaking down a lot. Leave the bull in the back paddock and let him charge at the gate.

Just watched it then, he started just outside the square, my mistake, but it looked more like he was positioned on a wing than hbf.

I highly doubt he will ever be a half back flanker, he clearly plays his best footy in the midfield/half forward.

Did he really start in the midfield in the last quarter?? I must have been at the bar :drunk:

One thing that has really surprised me on this board has been the angst towards Brayden Maynard and Jackson Ramsay.

Maynard is still so young and has shown some really promising signs. There have been some shockers mixed in with that as well, and it's fair to criticize him for those error. However, there has been some outright bagging and I've heard so many people write him off totally. I'm just thinking how good he is now at 20, how good could he possibly be at 23 with another 50-60 games behind him.

Same goes with Ramsay. One year back from a knee reco and people have been getting stuck right into him. I reckon he can be a pretty decent player if he has another solid pre-season. He showed really promising signs before his knee last year.

Modern style of football makes defenders look bad when they concede goals... No boundary line, no rushed behinds, can't touch arms, hands in back, holding the ball and zone defences make a backline under the pump look 10x worse than they are.

People forget with Ramsey that he's only played 15 games.

His not making mistakes.. he doesn't have a fast twitch mindset.. the ability to make split second decisions where he has to change his mind.. that's the skill he lacks. But love him nonetheless.

I think he does, albeit not in the elite...... I think fatigue is a a big part in his brain fades.

Another 20 games into this kids career and the split second decisions will improve vastly. We only have to look back at rance as an example of early lack of composure being removed from his game.

I've rated Maynard from early on. He's an animal, has a nice kick on him, is quickish, doesn't take a backward step and more often than not does the right thing.

Averaging 17 touches a game and .5 goals a game.

I see mark ricuttio in him.

I don't think we will see anywhere near his best till he's playing 10-15mins per quarter as a mid. I'd even like to see him played as a lead up toward from time to time.

I think he was still playing back just had a lot more time and space to float further up the ground. He is good 1 on 1 but can get lost in the zone. Footy's changed a hell of a lot in a short time and these loose goals you see a lot of (in every team) is not about a player beating another player it's about the defence as a whole not covering the situation. He's still young and needs to get a bit more confidence because when he goes in to his shell he his disposal numbers drop off big time. I think him not being an offensive threat is a much more negative impact to our team than him conceding a few goals because one of our strengths are we good aerial medium defenders that can cover any 'gaps' quickly if his gambits don't pay off.

His kicking is sublime. He's gone from being a talented kick but poor decision maker to our best kicking weapon.

Seriously? Not an offensive threat?

Big call. Williams will be 1 that will come back to bite us.
Yes I could see him biting ;)

Tough yes
Competitive yes
Beast yes
Good kick, no, alas a ball butcher

Williams disposal can be hot and cold but when he's on he's a very good user of the footy. Can see him becoming very consistent. Time will tell.
