I can't. They have the best small forward in the game and he can crumb.

Seriously, which club in the league can you name that has a need for a small marking forward?

Brett Ebert ....... a small forward???????

Funny, I've never seen him play like one?

Re: Teams Port v Melbourne

I see Brett Ebert is playing his 150th game this week.
Still think he has something to offer the Club.
Hopefully a new contract, a full preseason (as a few here seem to forget he had a knee reco this year!!) and a good season next year as we continue to rebuild.

Re: Teams Port v Melbourne

I'm done with Brett tbh. I like him and all but he needs to either raise his game significantly to be a midfielder or go somewhere else to play as a forward.

Re: Teams Port v Melbourne

Ebert can't do anything once the ball hits the ground when he plays as a small leading forward. He is always falling over if he doesn't mark the ball. Only marginally better when he starts in the mid field.

Re: Teams Port v Melbourne

Big Brett Fan here too be have lost the faith completely as I have with Kane and Thomas and Westhoff :)

However Tommy Gun has won me over, really stepped it up and from what I have seen his brain farts are far less than once were.

Stewart damn unlucky, I would have had him over Westy if possible.

Re: Teams Port v Melbourne

Nice to see so much respect for a 150 game player who at least gives the appearance of trying every time he takes the field............

Re: Teams Port v Melbourne

Never questioning that, but players have to be accountable for 4 years in the wilderness and trying only gets you so far. I did enjoy his forward pressure last week

Mate I could try my guts out on the field as well, but that doesnt mean I deserve a game.

Re: Teams Port v Melbourne

I have a lot of respect for Brett but if we're going to go places in the next few years then he won't be apart of it. I love the guy but he's not the kind of player to take us to the next level

Re: Teams Port v Melbourne

Perhaps gopower should change his avatar to "Two more years"?

Re: Teams Port v Melbourne

We all know Brett will be signed up for two more years. Lets not fool ourselves.

Pretty sure I heard Matty say a couple of weeks ago that he had been offered a 1 year contract - no mention since then of him signing so he may be looking around for better opportunities.

If he stays it sounds like the onus will be on him to show consistent good form next season.

He is not the only one to be bitterly disappointing the last few years. There is no reason others deserve to try and change opinions of themselves and he doesn't, I for one hope he comes back next year with a good attitude and work ethic and proves a lot of people wrong.

there has been some real positives the last few weeks in regards to re-signings and talk of new coaches coming in and some old coaches returning, there is money in the club courtesy of the AFL but all the same, for the first off season in a while there is a real positive feel around and maybe this will rub off some of these players going below par of late. We have something to look forward to and these 24-27 year old's in the system a few years have just as much right to look forward to it to.

Actually, there is, and its called `potential upside'

Even if Ebert comes back and does have a great preseason, is able to match his career best fitness, and all of that stuff, the best case scenario for us is that he is still a small marking forward with poor agility. And even if he was able to produce in this very specialist and structure-hindering role, he's not a 23 year old, he's got a couple more years left max (and frankly that is best case).

These 24-27 year olds are the non-leaders that have brought us where we are.

Re: Teams Port v Melbourne

Brett would actually be a perfect player to play a Daniel Harris type role for GWS. He would be a big bodied mid/forward who could take some heat off of the kids.

It would be a win for Brett as he would get more midfield time and a big win for PAFC as we wouldn't lose anyone else.

the same 24-27 year old were developed in Choco's post 2004 system and now for the first time with Primus being able to put his stamp on the group and the football department, some of these players may just find that little bit more we have all expected from them.

True on Ebert and age, My opinion is he still has something left to offer us. And with the positive changes about to be made on our club it may yet bring out positive results in these players.

Re: Teams Port v Melbourne

A one year contract would be a good outcome for port but i think it might be a cam bruce scenario ...well hopefully

Re: Teams Port v Melbourne

Nothing short of delisting him will be a good result for Port. It's unfortunate for Ebert who I've always liked, but the club has to be bigger than the player.

He and Kane need to be first and second out the door. They both were great servants of the club, but they were great servants of the club under Choco's unconventional gameplan. Primus is trying to play with a more traditional gameplan, and players with the strengths and weaknesses that Kane and Ebert have don't fit into that. Both of them have completely failed to adapt to the new style, and are still trying to play like they did in Choco's side (unlike Motlop, for example, who's changed his game to suit Matt's side). Having a guy in our midfield running around slowing down our ball movement with his pointless cheap possessions (Kane) or a 178cm 'key' forward getting in Schulz and Butcher's way (Ebert) is not only ineffective, but it actually has a negative impact on the side.

I'd rather have someone like Meyer or Davenport who are just not good at football all-round on the list than someone like Kane or Ebert who do have some strengths, but who's strengths don't fit into our gamestyle and who's weaknesses are so significant that they actually have a negative impact on the side. Especially because they'll continue to get games on past performances alone, even though their strong past performances under Choco's system are irrelevant to their ability to perform in Primus' system.

Thankfully I think Primus is all over this, gopower.

The fact that Ebert has been offered a new deal according to Primus and is still in the side suggests otherwise, unfortunately. I hope you're right though.

Re: Teams Port v Melbourne

My opinion is he still has something left to offer us.

The best case scenario for Brett - that is 50 goals monopolising a key forward role - would be the worst case scenario for Port Adelaide.

Can someone explain to me, why a club that has won only two games for the season, and constantly has said a massive cleanout will take place at seasons' end, continues to want to / try to sign players that have been duds this season, and in some cases for the last 3/4 seasons???

It's baffling...

Dont worry,

Meyer, Davenport, Moff and possibly Grew will all go.

Clean out! :thumbsu:
