So has he passed the medical?

If he gets a good result on the test, then get this done when the doors open on trade week monday.

If they have question marks over him i would be thinking twice about pick 11.
My understanding is that he passed.

He made mention of an ankle complaint - and they sent him to the Epworth for precautionary scans.

Surely he's still got to be a bit quicker than Bentley, Bentick or Hadely, and it's not like we don't want Judd and Murph on the end of his handballs anyway. I'm less concerned about inside mids leg speed, as long as they are not sloths.

It is difficult to say with his leg speed given the fact he didn't have a great pre-season and as such, he was unable to complete any sprint training.

I can't be certain as to the effect this had on his pace, but at times this year he looked unbelievably slow, so slow in fact he looked totally out of place on an AFL football field. I have the feeling this had something to do with an ongoing complaint though.

His kicking was also a bit poor this season, but when he's up and going he can be a very good footballer.

An interesting move which involves some risk for both parties, but I can see both doing okay out of it given our current situations.

Personally I'm very happy with the deal, I think Melbourne has done a great job to get a first rounder for a player who won't be a great loss given that his position is well and truly covered by others on our list.

Nice read.

I gather he is a plough, but apart from obvious leg speed, what does he need to improve to take the next step?

Essentially what are his skill weaknesses.

Leg speed.

Hasn't got a secondary position. Can't throw him down as a half forward and kick goals. It's centre or bench.

Struggles with heavy tags.

Despite this years stats, generally a good kick. Not a booming kick though.

Loves punching Germans.

Its a win-win trade for mine. If Melbourne were desperate to keep him he would have stayed with us having pick 1 in the pre season draft. Has anyone considered why he was let to go so easily. The simple fact is that we have a load of similar players in Sylvia, Jones, Moloney and to a lesser extent Valenti. We are also likely to take the best 2 midfield prospects in the country with pick 1 and 2 to go with players like Grimes, Morton, Blease, Strauss, Maric etc.

Pick 11 will mean that we (Melbourne) will take two elite junior mids (Scully and one of Trengove, Morabito, Martin) and two key position players (2 of Panos, Talia, Carlise, Black, Vardy, Griffiths or Fitzpatrick) before any side has their second pick.

We are giving up, when fit, despite what many other Melbourne Big Footy posters are saying in hindsight, a very good inside AFL midfielder. However in return we are getting 4 high draft picks, but more importantly a greater balance to our list and covering a clear deficancy in our list in the forward half.

You guys in return get two things your list lacks. A strong inside presence (other than Judd) and a player with heaps of mongrel ( C%$#). Players like Joseph and Robinson have been fantastic additions for Carlton this year and I believe this is why you are a step behind the top 6 at the minute. You have a great core of players but they dont strike the fear of god into opposition teams yet (IMO). Brock will definately help you on this front. If you look at both the Saints and the Cats, they have a heap of junk yard dogs who do all the dirty work so that the superstars can do what they do. Think back to the great Brisbane sides and Essendon 2000.

Chris Judd must be the happiest man in Victoria right now. He now has someone who will be willing and is capable of taking a massive amount of the load off his shoulders next year.

It is a win win for both clubs

Note: There are no garauntees Melbourne will pick a good player with 11 but logic dictates that picking 2 KPF with 11 and 18 will mean at least one will be a beauty and provide very good support for Watts and Jurrah

Whats Brocks general mobillity like around the groun?

Also, does he have a footy brain - is he a classy player?

... so many questions !!

Mobility - he gets around the ground but so does Bentick. Pace is the Q

He has a good footy brain but as far as class goes - I worry about the fact that I have often seen him get tackled totally unaware that he is hot

My god, after last nights effort, any need for comparison of Mclean to Bentick spells disaster.

Anything Bentick may have had going for him was not on show last night, and will most likely be the last time we hear his name in AFL circles.

He will be delisted but wasn't he in the ants best last night? Admittedly I was distracted watching it live but I did watch the replay of the first half and he would have been leading possession getter - so give him some credit although his disposal was only VFL standard

McLean went in for an MRI scan... not sure of the result exactly... but im petty sure it was positive for us.
When 100% and remember he has been carrying injuries and has had no pre season... his pace and mobility is good.. not great.. but certainly adequate for what he does.
He is a warrior... he is the hardened body to play inside..
Melbourne had to let him go.. they ccouldnt afford him money wise.. and they have a few players capable of stepping in to his void.
McLean and the Melbourne coach wernt enjoying each other.

For is he is a Gods send. Chris Judd no longer needs to be our Bret Kirk Cameron Ling player.. he can be Chris Judd...
With McLean inside bashing opposition midfielders and getting the ball out of Judd Murph and Gibbs.. theyre all going to have better years...

Would never have found that with the pick we had..

Fit and firing he'll be undoubtedly our best inside midfielder - Judd aside, who's just about the best inside and outside midfielder in the competition and undoubtedly the best all round midfielder.

Having two blokes of Judd's and Mclean's calibre around the clearances will be a huge plus. We've already been touted as one of the best midfield groups in the competition but a fit Mclean could very well give us the best group in the league. Will definitely allow Judd to play more outside at times knowing Mclean is good enough to get the job done.

I imagine we'll see more of his elite acceleration away from the congestion, hopefully some left-handed handballs and significantly better accuracy in front of the sticks.

Bring on 2010!

Spot on, plus gives us more midfield depth and hopefully Murph won't have to put up with 'hard' tags anymore ..

He'll be a great pickup for us, and i hope the Dees get a good player with pick 11.

If he has the all clear and happy to do a somewhat negative role with us (but not Melbourne) by crashing and bashing a little then you are right - we probably were not going to fluke anything better with 11

Completely agree with this THS.
People should also remember that guys like Lenny Hayes, Simon Black, Matthew Boyd, Nick Dal Santo and Dane Swan aren't exactly the quickest players going around, yet they seem to do pretty well for their respective teams.

If Brock can get a full pre-season under his belt, and stay relatively injury free, he's the hard-nosed mid we have been looking for for quite a few years. Terrific acquisition for the club.

McLean isn't a 'first dibs' inside mid. He's more 'predator'. McLean has been a better mid than Jones, but Jones is a far better clearance player. Clearances and the quality of ball use by hand isn't one of McLean's strengths.

He's a solid meat and potatoes 200 gamer - if his body holds up, but he's never been A grade. He's not elite 'inside' and he's not elite 'outside', just a good solid player. Your coaches know what they're getting.

Was it worth pick 11 ? Clearly it was to your FD. I'm stoked with 11. Classic win/win I guess.

He's missed 28 games through injury in the last 5 years.

He played 19 of 22 games this season, the most games he has played in a season since 2005 (20). Perhaps he is finally starting to get his body right.

One thing is for certain, at Carlton our medical people will do everything to ensure he gets his body right. Injury management is such an important part of the game these days & in recent seasons we have been able to consistently get the majority of our key players on the field.

That all sounds very clever. Like the way you throw in first dibs. What exactly in your mind does "first dibs" mean?
