Young West Coast key position player Mitch Brown will revert to being a forward after successfully switching to his preferred end of the field against Geelong yesterday.

Brown spent the first 10 games playing in the back line as he found his feet after missing last year because of a knee reconstruction.

He responded to the switch to the forward line with two goals.

Brown said the decision to play him in defence had been based on gaining confidence, but it was never going to be a permanent move. “I was always a forward,” he said.

“Going down back at the start of the year was just to get me going after my knee reconstruction.

“We always had the plan to go forward again. Playing down back for the first couple of games just added another string to my bow. I can swing each way now.”

Brown’s two goals came during a vital passage as West Coast fought back during the second term. A set shot from 30m reduced the deficit to 17 points and then he ran to 25m out after marking to make it 11.

Earlier in the term he had been responsible for getting the ball inside 50 to allow Josh Kennedy to kick a goal. “It was good to have a free run without having to worry about a man,” Brown said.
“It’s good up forward. I love being exciting and thrilling the team and being inspiring.
“All our talls have good running ability and we’re no too bad at ground level.
“Today I had a focus of using my run, getting up the ground, coming back and using my physical side to block for Mark LeCras.”

Brown’s return to the forward line resulted in Adam Hunter becoming a defender again. But both players have the flexibility to switch back.

Brown said losing to Geelong was never going to be considered acceptable, but the players were happy with how they performed.

“We were pleased with the effort we gave after the first 10 minutes,” he said.

“Our defensive press had them rattled at times. I thought they were arguing among each other and we were up and going. We’ve just got to be consistent.”

FINALLY :thumbsu:

The question is, will he play CHF or FF?

Always preferred Browny as a forward.

McKinley - Lynch - LeCras

Brown - Kennedy - Player X?

Player X hes your man Cuzz.

We have Notte to slide in somewhere as well... Would be good to see what Brown brings to the table in the forward line. Its still a bit of an unknown at the moment.

Interesting. Perhaps kennedy close to goals, brown CHF and lynch in a roving role.

Interesting, to have a big brute at 194cm in a roving role
And be careful with saying Kennedy closer to goal, E87 will be on your back!

Personally I reckon both Kennedy and Brown are built like CHF's but if i had to have one at FF it would be Brown.
If we are going to have Kennedy, Brown and Lynch in the same forward line is there room for McKinley as well? IMO no unfortunately. Then you still have Notte likely to be a big part of the forward line in years to come.
Surely with all those boys we should have the most damaging forward line in a couple of years. Just need to find a pure crumber

Always preferred Browny as a forward.

McKinley - Lynch - LeCras

Brown - Kennedy - Staker?

Naitanui - Brown - LeCras
Jetta - Kennedy - Notte

Our Forward line in 2010. Im EH and you know it makes sense. :thumbsu:
Naitanui is our crummer, tall option, pinch hitter.
LeCras is our small marking forwad/ crummer.
Brown is our short leading FF.
Kennedy is our pure long leading CHF.
Jetta is our HFF who will find space and deliver clean into the forward line or kick the running goal.
Notte Roams, dangerous with his I50's, mark, clean skills and abiltiy to kick goals.

I think Brown should play Hff or in a fwd pocket at this stage really like the way he goes at the ball got a good kick and strong hands.
Probably spells trouble for Mckinley unless he can get some more mobililty out of his body,he does try to run and chase but it looks to be a real struggle.

McKinley Brown Jetta
Lecras Kennedy Notte

I can understand the criticisms of McKinley's lack of defensive pressure and not playing infront of his man however he will be a star and he proved his worth last season. IMO he has too much bulk on him, really needs to cut down which will help him run and chase a bit more.

I think the forward line can operate with Lynch at FF and Kennedy at CHF. Despite his size, Brown has the mobility/athleticism/skills to be a "HFF" in a similar fashion to Ryan O'Keefe. He's a good kick so hopefully he can play that role for us.

lol already adding jetta into our forward structure, i think there will be a riot if he is not chosen by us in this years draft.;)

I liked Spangher playing alongside Glass and E-Mac. Set up alot of plays from the back-half and wasnt afraid to get in the faces of the Geelong players. So I guess Brown moving to the forward line provides us another marking target inside 50. But can we fit in Naita/Q/Brown/Kennedy?

Natinui should be a roving rucking most of the time and just play as a resting forward. But it would be interesting to see if he dominates as a FF/FP and how it effects our forward structure, it will be a good forwardline conundrum to have.

I think this is the best set-up as well.

Lynch is our best option out of the square with Lecras along side him.

Kennedy and Brown will both run through from 35mtr out - middle of the ground - It doesnt really matter in todays footy whether its CHF & HFF, positions are almost irellevant. They will rotate through in regards to leading hard up the ground or being stationed deeper. We are finally starting to form what will become dangerous forward line on 2010/2011

IMO these 4 guys represent the core to our forward line with a number of other rotations - Lynch, Lecras, Brown and Kennedy.

To me for the long term this is slightly worrying. I think its obvious that if a player can't find a regular position then their career is not going to be great. At CHB he has a definate position for the next 10 years however at FF he will soon be challenged by Tony Notte. I think he'd be just as good at both ends however if he's constantly switching he won't succeed at either. At the moment its not a problem because of Notte's size however that will definately change and what will we do having all of Kennedy, Notte and Brown up forwards? One will have to go especially if Naita, Cox or another future ruckman is resting down there from time to time. I would prefer to see Brown at CHB for future team structure as the more experience he gains there the better he'll become.

Burger I'm not sure Notte is being groomed for FF. It would take him ages if that was the case. He seems more of a leading HFF from what Swannies has written. With a great disposal by foot into the forward 50.

But it seems our forward structure at the moment is a bit lacking. We dont have a crumber apart from LeCras. Brown, Kennedy and McKinley all play tall and thats too many... It only matters if they cant chase and work defensively. Naitanui on the other hand ...:)

I know what you're saying about not finding a set position early in a career, it allows a player to settle and to feel comfortable, but i do think his best spot is through half forward. Brown is not a FF, he is too good running two ways to be a full forward and his fitness/pace/foot skills can be utilised to expose defenders. The same can be said for Kennedy, his game is to work extremely hard and work the angles to find a yard of space to be able to maximise this he needs to be given the space to work up and back. I think at this stage Lynch is definately our FF as we dont want him getting the ball outside 60-70, basically because he does not make great decisions, the game needs to be simple for him. Once Lynch gets older I Notte will come in and be our leading FF with the other 2 (Brown and Kennedy) rotating through deep/leading up.

It is a great situation to be in because i do not reckon we have ever had so many KPP to develop.
